Asakura Jun'ichi lives alone with his step-sister Nemu, as their parents are working overseas. Having been brought together by the marriage of their parents, they are happy at having grown up together, and are very close and supportive of each other, so close that perhaps they might have deeper feelings for one another. Being of the same age, they look forward to starting their third year in high school, but there is a breeze of magic in the air that seems to hold a promise of new friends and adventure.

In a magical town where the cherry blossom trees bloom unnaturally all year around, Jun'ichi stirs uneasily each night, lost in the images of other people's dreams. While Jun'ichi complains that he is unhappy at being a minor mage (only able to perform the simple magic trick of creating a sweet rice ball or two), a number of other special students somehow become entangled in his life.

Yoshino Sakura, the daughter of a magician and a childhood friend reappears after a six-year absence to show her joy at being reunited with Jun'ichi by clinging to his arm, calling him her onii-chan, much to Nemu's concern. The academy's school idol, Shirakawa Kotori, who is rumoured to have the ability to understand other people's feelings or thoughts, also becomes a friend of Jun'ichi and Nemu. The strange sisters Mizukoshi Moe and Mako, succeed in drawing Jun'ichi into their lives with disastrous results. And Jun'ichi somehow finds himself looking after Miharu-chan, a robot who is attending their school and Sagisawa Yoriko, a cat-eared foundling, who ends up staying at their house in exchange for doing maid work. But while Jun'ichi might complain about not having any magic skills and about many other things, there appears to be a greater magic at work in his favour.

Note: Most of the episodes have 15 minutes of anime followed by a 5-10 minute 'side story' which uses the same characters but in a different setting, or a (live action) pop music short.

It is the refreshing season of early summer. Deep in the lonely mountains, surrounded by endless nature, the secluded male reform school Hane no Oto Campus is located. Among the illustrious students, meet the Baka Trio (Idiotic Trio): the motivated spirit Bachi-Guu, your typical idiot Ichibansei, and the big guy Tenjin. Not to forget the obligatory average main character Takasaki Yuusuke.

Worrying about their campus life, disaster strikes! Before boys and girls can attend classes together, an evaluation period was required, allowing high school girls to visit the all-boys campus. Of course the Baka Trio hears of the "female invasion" first, and is appropriately exited. However, faced with the unknown opposite sex from the city, they do not know how they should approach them. And so, eventually a bus-load of girls arrives at the campus.

"Yuusuke-kun!" — One of the exuberant female students, Chitose Midori, exclaims exiting the bus, greeting the dumbfounded Yuusuke. Their eyes meet, and the girl hugs Yuusuke severely... but who is this strange girl?

"How long has it been raining? Forever. Not forever, no! For a hundred years. They say billions of people once lived on the Earth. When the temperatures rose, the great cities fell, and this rain came, this terrible toxic rain. Our ancestors saw it coming, the catastrophe. They built Ecoban, the first living city, genetically engineered to survive in a poisonous environment. Ecoban became our refuge, our salvation. Survivors came by the thousands, begging to be let in. But our ancestors turned them away, left them to die in the wasteland. The ones who survived became our workers, mining the carbonite fields to feed our Ecoban. Diggers we call them. The Diggers need us, we need them, everybody wins. But some win more than others." — from intro

In In the year 2113 A.D., a team of scientists is dispatched to Antarctica to investigate the region's abnormal seismic activity. Near the epicenter of the activity, the expedition discovers vast land markings akin to the Nazca paleoglyphs drawn in the Peruvian desert. Stranger still is the presence of an enormous underground cavern below these symbols. At the bottom of the chasm, a portion of a tremendous tower juts from the ground. Armed with ultra-digital cameras, the scientific team transmits their findings to the Command Center. One explorer traces the image of a star chart engraved on the tower's exterior. The tower begins to emit a sinister howling as if possessed by demonic forces. One by one, the members of the expedition writhe in pain and die. Those observing the scene at the Command Center watch helplessly. As the high-frequency noise suffuses their headquarters, they too succumb and die in agony. When the waves of the frequency are analyzed, they are discovered to be a beacon directed at the planet Elysium, which lies beyond Earth's solar system.

Van, the reluctant hero of the story, is an 18-year-old pizza delivery boy in Manhattan. He competes in the most popular sport of the 22nd century -- turbo jai alai racing. These races are fast paced and deadly affairs that integrate virtual reality into the competition. He's deeply in love with Lydia, a talented ballerina. In the chaotic futuristic metropolis, they only have each other and their dreams. Van and Lydia desperately want the chance to escape the polluted city-scape. Despite the dangers, Van enters a turbo jai alai race in the hopes of winning first prize -- two tickets to a galactic resort where Lydia can audition for the Jupiter Ballet.

Meanwhile, earth's deep space observation vessel, the Odyssey, patrols the planet's orbital perimeter. The Odyssey is confronted by an armada of sophisticated alien spacecraft from Elysium. The awed human crew prepares to receive the Elysian ambassador, Yaspe. Without warning, the Odyssey loses control of its weapons, fires on the ambassador's vessel and destroys it. This tragic misunderstanding results in brutal retaliation by the Elysian fleet, culminating in the destruction of the Odyssey and a full-scale attack on Earth.

Van's deadly sport of choice turns deadlier when the stadium he is competing in comes under fire from the Elysian barrage. Van struggles through the chaos on his turbo-cycle to rescue Lydia from the collapsing stands. The indiscriminate Elysian onslaught scorches cities worldwide. Van and Lydia flee through the burning streets of Manhattan seeking safety. After a series of harrowing escapes, they find refuge in a claustrophobic fall-out shelter.
