Half-demons, usually referred to as Hanyou (半妖) in Japanese, are the offspring of humans and demons (youkai). They in general retain a human body, but may also have active or dormant demonic powers like superhuman strength, increased sensory perception, the ability to partly or wholly change into a demonic appearance, etc.
In anime they are often outcasts as neither humans nor demons will fully accept them.

Half-demon entities exist in Japanese mythology, though were not referred to by the modern terms. The concept of "hanyou" was popularized by veteran mangaka and Japanese mythology expert Mizuki Shigeru.
Famous half-demons in anime/manga include InuYasha or Kitarou.
