A collar is a band, chain, or other device that encircles the neck and is used for purposes of restraint, identification, and/or display of submissiveness. It is not to be confused with a choker, which is a similar item used for fashion purposes; items that clearly do not look like collars and/or cannot be used for a collar's purposes, such as a strip of cloth, are chokers. Collars are commonly used on animals and rarely on humans, but may also be used with humans under some circumstances, such as on slaves.

Please note that, even if a human is wearing a collar, it is to be considered a choker unless it is actually being used as a collar. The same applies to any human-like entity. For the purposes of this tag (and for the purposes of this tag only!), an entity is "human-like" if they have human-like intelligence AND sufficiently humanoid form and body proportions. This includes typical elves, humanoid intelligent Martians, typical vampires, human skeletons, and so on.

Please also note that entities that would generally use collars and not chokers, such as animals, should be tagged collar, so long as the item can be reasonably understood to be one. This is also valid for anthropomorphic or sentient (e.g. talking) animals, as well as any entity clearly based on them. For example, if the animals in Hamtarou were to wear collars, or chokers that could be reasonably understood to be collars, they would be tagged collar. Please note that beastpeople (such as catgirls, dogboys, etc) are not considered "clearly based" on animals; they should be treated as human-like if they fit the criteria for human-like entities, and should only be treated the same as animals when they are not human-like (in other words, their intelligence is closer to those of animals OR they are not humanoid).
