Geta are a form of traditional Chinese footwear also adopted by Japan that resemble both clogs and flip-flops. They are a kind of sandal with an elevated wooden base held onto the foot with a fabric thong to keep the foot well above the ground. The tengu geta variant has a single "tooth" exceeding 10cm, typically 14cm or taller. Modern geta may be made with plastic instead. A sandal that contains only a fabric thong strap is not a geta; that is just a regular sandal.
Chinese people started wearing cloth-made shoes and stopped wearing geta at least 2000 years ago, around the beginning of the Common Era or earlier, but geta are still kept by Japanese people. Geta are worn with traditional Chinese/Japanese clothing such as Hanfu, kimono or yukata, but in Japan also with Western clothing during the summer months. Sometimes geta are worn in rain or snow to keep the feet dry, due to their extra height and impermeability compared to other shoes footwear such as zouri.
