With our support, Brake, the road safety charity is campaigning for all new vehicles in the UK to have life-saving technology fitted as standard. Dr Mike Lenné joined a roundtable with Professor Nick Reed and other industry experts from National Highways, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks, Bosch, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, Agilysis Limited, Road Safety Foundation UK, University of Leeds Institute for Transport Studies and TES 2000 Ltd. They discussed recent insights and public opinion on the topic, and worked to define a set of recommendations for different industry sectors to follow, should the government agree to adopt all or any of the vehicle General Safety Regulation updates. 📢 Euro NCAP Publishes 2026 Safety Rating Protocols Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks has officially released its 2026 safety rating protocols this week, setting a new benchmark for vehicle safety. The updated protocols reflect Euro NCAP’s commitment to Vision Zero, ensuring vehicle safety with evolving technological advancements. A key update is the Safe Driving category, which introduces a new scoring model, allocating 25 safety points to driver monitoring. Notably, up to 2 points can be earned for detecting non-fatigue impairments, such as alcohol intoxication, without relying on intrusive interlock devices. For assisted driving vehicles, these 2 points represent up to 16% of the driver monitoring compliance requirements. [Euro NCAP: A New Era for Automotive Safety] On March 18, 2025, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks) achieved a significant milestone in automotive safety. The new protocols were approved and will enter into force in 2026, bringing a comprehensive overhaul to how vehicle safety is assessed. A New Rating Structure: Tests will now be categorized into the four stages of an accident: ✅ Safe Driving ✅ Crash Avoidance ✅ Crash Protection ✅ Post-Crash Safety 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 2026: 🔸 Safe Driving → Stricter criteria for detecting driver distraction & fatigue + the first-ever Human-Machine Interface (HMI) evaluation. 🔸 Crash Avoidance → A greater focus on real-world driving situations & the acceptability of emergency interventions. 🔸 Crash Protection → Improved safety for smaller, older, and child occupants, plus new rollover and pedestrian protection assessments. 🔸 Post-Crash Safety → Enhanced emergency response protocols, including updates for electric vehicle fire risks and occupant extrication. 🚀 With this, Euro NCAP has teamed up with IVEX for the world’s first on-road robustness testing and assessment initiative. The collaboration aims to enhance testing methodologies for ADAS by introducing dynamic and real-world testing into the assessment process.
