ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Cavaliers had one final shot at the buzzer with a chance to tie the score, but senior
Keith Blassingale's three point attempt missed the mark, as the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered a 75-72 loss at Marymount University tonight.
The loss snapped the Blue and White's four game win streak and dropped the club to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic East Conference.
Blassingale led the Cavaliers with 20 points, including 17 in the first half, while junior
Justin Gans added 16 points. Sophomore
Voshon Mack paired 12 points and 10 rebounds in his first action after missing five games due to injury.
Cabrini seized control of the action in the opening minutes, as it used a 14-5 spurt to build a 21-9 lead midway through the first half. The Saints responded with an 8-0 run of their own to pull within four points.
The Cavaliers never allowed the home team to come any closer during the final minutes of the opening stanza. Cabrini's advantage grew to 11 points with 1:37 to play before the break, but the Saints scored the final five points to pull within 41-35 at the half.
The Blue and White fought to maintain its slim lead through the second half, but a game Marymount squad evened the score at 52 and 54.
Back to back free throws by juniors
DJ Smith and
Brice Parks pushed Cabrini's lead to 58-54 at the 9:47 mark, but the Saints scored the next five points to grab their first lead of the game. It would be the last time the Cavaliers would lead in the game.
Marymount pushed its lead to 64-59 with 7:36 to play, but the Cavaliers would not led the Saints pull away.
Cabrini kept its deficit within a single possession over much of the game's final seven minutes, pulling within a single point five times, but the needed defensive stop continued to elude the Blue and White. The Saints also converted each of their final four free throw attempts over the final 31 seconds.
After shooting north of .555 from the field in the first half, the Blue and White connected on just .379 after the break. Cabrini also committed 23 turnovers, among its most of the season, which the Saints converted into 27 points.
Steve Etienne and Ladarius McCord combined for 55 of Marymount's (12-9, 5-3 Atlantic East) 75 points on the night, including 27 in the second half. Taiga Walker also matched Etienne with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Cavaliers will look to begin another win streak on Saturday, when they pay a visit to Gwynedd Mercy (15-5, 6-1 Atlantic East). Game time is slated for 3pm.
