ARLINGTON, VA – It had been nearly two months since the Cavaliers walked off the floor feeling the way they did today, as the Cabrini men's basketball team scored a 70-69 victory at Marymount.
The win not only snapped Cabrini's string of six consecutive losses, but also marked the team's first game action in 17 days.
Despite leading by as many as 14 points midway through the second half, the Blue and White found itself trailing 69-68 with just 77 seconds to play.
A Cabrini turnover gave the Saints a change to go up three points in the final minute, but the Cavaliers' turned up their defensive pressure. Cabrini forced a missed lay-up with 23 seconds to play giving them a chance for the final shot.
Marymount had other ideas, committing back to back fouls, sending sophomore
Aquil Stewart to the free throw line for a one-and-one with 10 seconds to play. The sophomore calmly drained both attempts, putting Cabrini ahead 70-69.
Following a Blue and White timeout, the Cavaliers again turned to their defense to seal the victory. The Saints inbounded the ball with six ticks on the clock, but the Blue and White held firm, forcing a Marymount turnover in the game's final second.
Five Cavaliers scored at least nine points in the win, led by Stewart's 20 points to go with six steals. Sophomores
Malik Bailey and
Josh Jones narrowly missed double doubles, as both corralled nine rebounds and scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Seniors
Billy Warren and
Brice Parks also tallied 11 and nine points, respectively.
While Marymount built an early 9-2 lead, most of the first half was played within three points and included six ties and nine lead changes.
The Cavaliers wasted little time in the second half expanding on its 36-33 halftime lead. Stewart went on a personal 8-0 run, punctuated by a steal and lay-in that gave Cabrini a 46-35 lead just two minutes into the stanza.
Minutes later, the Cavaliers used another 8-0 spurt to extend their lead, as back to back Bailey buckets pushed their advantage to a game-high 58-44 at the 12:18 mark.
Marymount had an answer, responding with a 19-4 run of its own to take a 63-62 lead on a three pointer by Wyatt Hockenberry with just under six minutes to play. The lead swung back and forth over the next four minutes, with a Miles Brown basket giving the home team a 69-68 lead with 1:17 to play.
Xavier Reaves led the Saints with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Brown paired 16 points and 10 boards.
