ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WKRC) - An Indiana woman reportedly claimed her brakes weren't working properly after she nearly struck two children while they were boarding a bus.

According to the South Bend Tribune, 23-year-old Shau-Ri Sparkle Rose is facing multiple charges after prosecutors say she drove onto the shoulder of a roadway at around 7:40 a.m. to pass a school bus while its lights were activated and its stop sign was extended.

WNDU16 obtained Ring Doorbell video, which appears to capture the incident.

The South Bend Tribute reported that Rose nearly struck two children, aged 15 and 17, while making the pass. Under Indiana law, it is illegal for drivers to pass a school bus that is picking up or dropping off passengers.

When speaking to police, the 15-year-old student said that she would have been struck had her foot been one step ahead, per the affidavit obtained by The Tribute.

Following the incident, authorities were on the lookout for a red Dodge Charger with dark tinted windows and a possible black stripe down the side, according the publication.

Police were able to locate Rose after receiving a description of the driver from a witness and utilizing a license plate reader camera, The Tribute reported.

Prosecutors allege that Rose immediately admitted to being the driver of the Charger after being confronted by authorities, per the publication. Documents reviewed by The Tribune also state that Rose told officers that she was turned away from the wheel because her son had unstrapped himself while they were on the way to a daycare.

When she turned back, she said she attempted to stop, but was unable to do so because her brakes weren't working properly, the publication reported.

According to the outlet, Rose told the officer that once she saw the video on social media, she attempted to call police, but was unable to make contact. The officer was able to confirm that two outgoing calls were made to the St. Joseph County Police Department on the suspect's phone, the prosecutor's office said, according to The Tribune.

Rose was charged with the following on March 21, per the publication:

  • Two charges of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon (Level 6 felonies)

She was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail at around 11 a.m. on Monday, and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
