The felt temperature in Istanbul this year reached 45 °C. The exhausts of the busy traffic of this metropole make the heat island effect worse. If current emission trends continue, demand for air conditioning will increase by 70%. The climate crisis and related extreme temperatures are daunting and can have deeper consequences for our lives. But cities like Istanbul are looking at solutions and ensuring that nature is used as a solution to protect its citizens and future generations. Which of our day-to-day choices have the biggest impact on emissions that affect the climate? New WRI research quantifies the most significant changes we could make to live more sustainably – with surprising results. For example, shutting off lights and composting aren’t high on the list. So which actions make the biggest difference? The four most impactful changes you can make are: 1. Shift to sustainable ground travel – away from gas-powered cars 🚲 2. Shift to air travel alternatives 🚆 3. Install residential solar and increase home energy efficiency ☀️🛰️⚡ 4. Eating more plant-based meals 🌱 🌎 There’s a catch, though. Our research shows that nudging people to change their behavior without making those behaviors easier to adopt achieves just a tiny slice of the possible impact – about 10%. Unlocking the remaining 90% will require more supportive government policies and industry practices, as well as our own collective action to make sustainable choices easier, cheaper and more accessible. What we do for the planet matters – but we also need better systems in place to unlock the full potential of human behavior change to slash emissions. Ever heard of removing methane from the air? Methane is a super pollutant gas, 80 times stronger than CO₂ over 20 years, according to the National Academies (2024). It comes from cows, rice farming, landfills, and fossil fuels, and it's heating up our planet fast. While reducing emissions is the first step, scientists are also exploring ways to remove methane already in the atmosphere. Some early ideas include: ➡️ Using soil microbes ➡️ Special machines called methane reactors ➡️ Chemicals that break down methane in the air These are all still new and need more testing, safety checks, and proper rules before we use them on a large scale. So, should we focus on removing methane or just reduce it at the source? Have you ever thought why some parts of a city feels hotter than others? It’s all about how heat interacts with trees, buildings, and roads. To fight city heat, we need the right data for the right problem: ➡️ Thermal comfort helps people outdoors ➡️ Surface temperature improves indoor cooling ➡️ Heat index tracks health risks during heatwaves Using smarter tools leads to smarter solutions. What tool or idea should your city try? https://bit.ly/4i6Ml5s #UrbanHeat #SmarterCities #ClimateAdaptation #HeatResilience #ThermalComfort #CoolCities #CityDesign #ClimateAction

Feeling the heat? Well, you're not alone! 3.6 billion people are already facing climate shocks like floods, droughts, heatwaves, and food insecurity. While cutting emissions gets most of the attention, adapting to climate change is just as important. The Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), part of the Paris Agreement, was created to help countries build resilience. But even after 8 years, it still lacks clear targets and proper plans. At COP28, last year, countries adopted the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, which is a positive step. But there’s still work to do. Adaptation needs to be locally led, not just planned from the top. Funding must actually reach people on the ground. And local communities, Indigenous knowledge, and justice must be part of every decision. As we move towards COP30, it’s time to turn these promises into real, on-the-ground action. The time to act is now! Are shared grids the future of energy? The world realises that working together on energy makes more sense than every country trying to do it alone. When nations connect their power systems, they can: ⚡ Meet rising electricity demands without relying so heavily on fossil fuels ⚡Move beyond the impossible dream of total "energy independence" ⚡Create stronger, more adaptable energy networks We've already seen this work in real life. Ukraine stayed powered during the war by connecting to the EU's grid. When France's nuclear plants had problems, they imported electricity from Spain and Britain. Connected grids offer real advantages. They let sunny regions share solar power with cloudy ones, and windy areas help out when others are calm. The system becomes more reliable for everyone involved. Making this work requires effort- countries must cooperate politically, invest wisely, and coordinate their technical systems. But the momentum is growing. More regions from Europe to Africa to Asia recognise that shared grids could lead to cleaner, more affordable, and more stable energy for all. WRI Europe heeft dit gerepost
At a time when leadership and ambition are most needed amidst global political uncertainty, it deeply concerns me to read the news that the European Commission would consider loosening such a critical milestone as the EU’s 2040 emission target, which was previously proposed at 90% emission reduction. In the face of a retreating US and a fragmented world, Europe’s stable course to make its economy cleaner and more efficient is its best bet for competitiveness. A steady, reliable course creates stability for investors and companies alike and may be the EU’s main comparative advantage over other major economies. A society that is built on renewable and greener forms of energy and can decouple itself from relying on oil and gas imports is a more secure and resilient society. The choice is clear: we can have a future with clean and safe energy, a strong and competitive, low-carbon EU economy, climate-resilient cities and future-proof, sustainable jobs. But then we need to act. This is our chance to shape the future in a big way. Climate policy is a solution to real issues like energy prices, resilience, and disaster prevention. If done the right way, the much needed investments in infrastructure and even defence in the EU offer an unparalleled opportunity to create world-leading sustainable industrial sectors. Now is the moment to seize the strategic opportunity to make Europe resilient and secure—economically, socially, and environmentally. The climate crisis does not negotiate, and neither should we.
