“Studio,” featuring a warbling verse by Young Thug, is timelessly, charmingly nasty R&B

There are two main problems with Jacquees’ new album: 1. Chris Brown is on it, and 2. It’s too long. Setting those issues aside, it’s pretty much bulletproof. 4275 is the Atlanta R&B singer’s debut album, though he’s already had a long career of mixtapes and features, doing the often thankless task of singing the hook. Well, he shines on his own here, with buttery song after buttery song. “Studio,” featuring a warbling verse by Young Thug, takes R&B and soul tropes of the past four decades or so and smashes them together to make something timelessly, charmingly nasty. “I wanna fuck you in the studio,” Jacques says. And though generally studios are indoor facilities, this is calling for a video of him on his knees in the rain, pleading his case. But as classic as he may be, there’s something very fresh about Jacquees; “Studio” seems like he wrote it in real time based on a text message conversation he was having. Pretend he was talking to you.
