We’re investing in wind, nuclear and solar to help prevent future energy crises and help Britain achieve Net Zero.
About us
EDF is helping Britain achieve Net Zero by leading the transition to a cleaner, low-emission, electric future and helping prevent future energy crises. Our nuclear fleet has supplied low-carbon electricity to UK homes for more than 40 years, and we’re helping with the development of new nuclear stations at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. But we’re not stopping there. EDF is also investing in wind, solar and battery storage technology and helping customers decarbonise their homes and businesses through low-carbon tech such as heat pumps and electric vehicles. Sizewell B, the youngest operational nuclear reactor in the UK, started generating low-carbon electricity in 1995. Hear from Marc Chevalier about how the team is supporting Sizewell B for a lifetime extension that would see the station continue generation for an extra 20 years 🔄

Another fantastic visit with our EDF R&D France colleagues last week—this time at #Heysham, on the Lancashire coast in northwest England. We had the opportunity to explore the unique features of Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (#AGR) technology and how it complements our shared experience with #PWRs. It was a pleasure to welcome Pascal CHARLES, Jean-Christophe Huchard, Jacques Sacreste and the delegation to one of the UK’s key nuclear sites—an ideal location to discover AGR technology, with not one but two power stations on site! Heysham 1, led by Mike Davies, shares its reactor design with #Hartlepool and has been generating power since 1983. The station consists of two Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors, supplying a total of 1,155 MW to the national grid. Heysham 2, led by Martin Cheetham, shares its reactor design with #Torness and has been in operation since 1988. Equipped with two Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors, the station delivers 1,230 MW to the grid. Beside the visit, we had very insightful discussions on synergies between EDF (UK) and French #nuclear R&D, particularly in areas such as long-term operation (LTO), advanced modular reactors (AMRs), grid integration, climate resilience, and digital innovation. A special thanks to Richard Bradfield, Michelle Hoy, and Rachael Glaving for spending a large part of the day with us, as well as to the Heysham 1 and Heysham 2 station teams for their valuable insights (and enthusiasm!). With recent life extensions at both sites, this visit was a timely opportunity to explore how R&D can continue supporting operational excellence—while also preparing for the future of nuclear, linking today’s knowledge to AMR and #HTGR development. Looking forward to the next steps in strengthening UK-France R&D collaboration! We’re thrilled to have been nominated for the Large Scale Project award in the South West Regional Energy Efficiency Awards. 🌟 The nomination recognises the successful delivery of an energy efficiency scheme in partnership with Wiltshire Council, which involved the installation of renewable heating measures and insulation to over 80 eligible homes. A huge thank you to everyone involved, including Paul Thornton from Wiltshire Council and Mark Dallen from our Zero Carbon Homes team, pictured here with Joe and Beth who benefitted from the free installation of solar panels and an 8kW Ideal Air Source Heat Pump in their home. Good luck to all the nominees at tonight’s awards! National Energy Efficiency Awards

I had a fantastic visit to Sizewell B and the Sizewell C site last Friday, touring both the current facility and the active construction area. The plans and scale of the operation are extensive, and I will continue to push for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich residents to receive their fair share of the benefits that this project will bring. Watch the first weld in the reactor building on unit 1’s primary circuit. This work will connect together the reactor pressure vessel (RPV), four steam generators and the four main coolant pumps. The welds will be some of the most complex and critical on our project. #BuiltByUs
