🚨 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 🚨 On December 10, 2024, a staged emergency scenario at 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 tested the readiness of local emergency services to handle a potentially deadly chemical leak. This exercise, designed to simulate a spill of corrosive acids, highlighted the critical role that scientific expertise plays in ensuring public safety during hazardous incidents. Chemists from Bureau Veritas UK, led by Stephen Yao, provided invaluable support, advising responders on the risks associated with the chemicals involved and the safest methods for handling them. Their expertise allowed emergency teams to focus on effective decontamination and communication, ensuring a coordinated response to protect the public. As new chemical hazards emerge, ongoing training and adaptation are essential for emergency responders to stay prepared. Building strong relationships between emergency services and industry experts enhances response capabilities and speeds up the identification of hazardous materials. At Strategic Allies Limited (SAL), we recently had the opportunity to partner with a forward-thinking cosmetics company seeking to develop novel products with enhanced functionalities. Our mission? To conduct a comprehensive search for innovative raw materials that meet specific technical criteria, with a focus on bio-based and biodegradable options. 🔍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: The client aimed to explore chemicals from adjacent industries, requiring a thorough analysis of physical and chemical properties, human and environmental toxicity, and solubility. They needed a diverse range of candidate ingredients to fuel their internal R&D and product prototyping efforts. 💡 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: • Engaged our extensive partner network and reviewed scientific literature, patents, and industry resources across various sectors, including food, pharma, textiles, and agriculture. • Collected and validated technical data through expert interviews and supplier discussions. • Conducted weekly meetings with the client to prioritize promising candidates, ultimately diving deep into five molecule classes. 📊 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲: We identified 𝟳𝟴 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀, narrowing it down to 𝟮𝟰 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 presented in a collaborative workshop with the client’s senior R&D team. C&EN has released a great profile of Frances Arnold, the Chemistry Nobel winner and Priestly Medalist best known for her groundbreaking work on directed evolution of enzymes. Her lab at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has developed extraordinary new capabilities in enzymes, allowing them to facilitate chemical changes absent in nature. Starting with an enzyme called subtilisin that breaks down the milk protein casein, Arnold's team developed a new version working in the organic solvent dimethylformamide demonstrating that they could create an evolved enzyme that did something no natural enzyme had been shown to do. Her enzymes are now used to create drugs, build biofuels from sugar, and make and break carbon-silicon bonds.
