Thank you to the amazing Nisha Hate (Nair), Tolu Osinubi, and Amy Lynch who brought insightful lived experience to our discussion around social mobility and neurodiversity for our Leaders Lab: Women In Tech event yesterday. I leave every one of our events proud of the team we have here at Corecom Consulting & Corecom Technology Academy and the support we have from our network of incredible speakers who give up their time to help us raise awareness of such important topics of conversation. Some things to bring to your attention from the event: - Only 0.01% of women in tech are black! This is a scary statistic and has to be changed! - Be curious about people in your team to understand intersectional characteristics - ERG can come from anyone in the business, not just HR - empower change - find your sponsor! Personally, I loved the intertwined group for intersectional inclusivity in ERG groups Thoughtworks started with. This morning, I had the privilege of attending a thought-provoking roundtable event on behalf of WeGetDesign. Hosted by Avril Lewis, MBE, MBE, Managing Director of Technology Connected, the event focused on addressing the current and future needs of the tech industry, particularly the skills gap. Despite initial nerves, I found the discussions incredibly insightful. Sharing my journey as an apprentice in digital marketing was a highlight, especially given the shocking statistic that only 17% of employers in Wales hire apprentices. I am immensely grateful to WeGetDesign for investing in apprenticeships, allowing me to grow my career while gaining valuable qualifications. Here are some eye-opening statistics : 🔹 Only 17% of employers in Wales offered apprenticeships in 2022, up from 15% in 2016 (Source: Employer Skills Survey 2022, gov.wales). 🔹 9% of employers currently employ apprentices; 8% offer apprenticeships but have no current apprentices. 🔹 A staggering 80% of apprenticeships in Wales are in Healthcare or Public Services (Source: gov.wales). 🔹 Merely 0.82% (70 students) of Welsh apprentice starts are in IT Users/IT/Other Frameworks in 2022-2023 (Source: Coleg Wales). There are apprenticeship opportunities available, but more people need to be made aware of them and the benefits they offer. Employers need to utilise the opportunity of hiring apprentices, who can be trained to meet their specific standards and drive innovation. The conversations with various industry leaders about their organisational needs and perspectives on the tech landscape in Wales were invaluable. For solutions and for news media leveraging AI there’s a quote in Paul Lee’s research from Deloitte (Paul heads up research in the UK and is genius so worth a look) about consumers considering that companies should focus on improving quality over reducing costs while leaving sensative matters to a human - which seems to be more about the emotional support than the ability to answer a questions. That said both a reduction of opex and and improved quality of service and product can be achieved whether for chatbots or for editorial content if this balance - which may seem obvious but can get easily skewed - remains a North Star. #AI #Deloitte

Hey everyone I’m on the lookout for new opportunities as my contract role at the BBC wraps up at the end of this month. It's been a wild 12 months. After a tough redundancy that really took a toll on my wellbeing, I’ve bounced back stronger, working on a product I’m passionate about with an incredible team. The thing? BBC Food. Despite the brilliant editorial team, it was missing a product focus and was falling behind in overall priorities. I changed that. Here’s what I’ve been up to: • Developed and implemented a new product strategy with the support of senior stakeholders. • Raised c. £1m in internal investment to kickstart a vital technical migration. • Brought in the talented folks from Hippo to tackle the first steps of this migration, paving the way for bigger wins across the BBC. • Led a discovery phase to figure out future editorial tools and how they fit into our bigger picture. • Launched the migrated Articles in a new tech format, tripling our SERP impressions! Working with a fantastic panel of stakeholders and getting everyone on the same page has been an absolute triumph. It’s been the most rewarding work I’ve done in years. --- What’s next? Honestly, I’m open! A contract product, strategy or innovation role would be perfect, and if it could turn into a full-time gig, even better. Here’s how I can help: • Product Strategy and Vision: I turn business goals, user insights, and solid data into a compelling story that gets everyone on board. • Stakeholder Alignment: I’m great at rallying diverse stakeholders around a common goal. • Product Leadership: I lead delivery teams that make a real difference in product performance through roadmaps that put the team at the centre. • Discovery and Innovation: I dive deep to identify future needs and align them with strategic goals. • Investment Acquisition: I’ve got a knack for securing significant internal funding to push products forward. I’m excited to bring my skills and experience to a new challenge. Team Topologies for breakfast, anyone?🙂. Last week, Spectrum IT Recruitment invited me to introduce some of their awesome clients to new ways of thinking about how they structure their software teams. The session started at 8:30 am with a great breakfast selection put on by our hosts. Then we kicked off a 90-minute section introducing some key concepts and quickly got people hands-on trying to solve a real-world problem using the Team Topologies modelling shapes. It has been a full to the brim week so far in London. Sitting on the train home is the first time I've had some space to reflect on the Product Design Week #PDW24. My first observation is what fantastically organised event. Getting the basics right goes a long way. My biggest take away is that what our teams are doing are the right things. That our approach and prioritisation of customer centricity not only means we design and build technology that is relevant but we make each and every person who comes into contact with our technologies day a little more meaningful. Students are enabled to learn, teachers enabled to influence our futures, leaders are enabled to make data-informed decisions and parents have the reassurances that the small stuff is covered when using our engagement apps. This is powerful stuff and often it's not given the creedance it deserves. Also, the event environment that facilitated the networking was top notch. So many quality conversations; too many to mention and some fantastic connections made that I intend to nurture. #PDW24 #product #design #UX #customerfirst #leadership #networking #inspired
