Firefighters are continuing to monitor a new fire front in the Mourne Mountains.

The blaze broke out in the Bloody Bridge area of the Co Down beauty spot shortly before 7pm on Sunday evening.

However, due to the terrain being “too dangerous” crews remain at a distance from the fire.

A fire appliance has monitored the scene overnight and firefighters will attempt to extinguish it if the flames begin to approach nearby properties.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, firefighters at the scene said “the terrain is simply too dangerous for us.”

“The fire seems to have slowed down; but we can’t have any of the team up there.

“We will have one appliance keep an eye on it overnight and if it starts to threaten life or homes; we will get the teams back up.”
