Player Outlook
Blake Snell didn't secure a contract for 2024 until signing with the Giants in mid-March, and the turbulent offseason carried over into the regular season. He joined San Francisco's rotation in early April but made just six starts and had a 9.51 ERA during the first three months of the campaign as he missed time due to groin and hamstring injuries. The left-hander was dominant once he returned from the injured list in July and closed the season with just 11 earned runs allowed in his final 14 starts, and he had a 114:30 K:BB over 80.1 innings during that stretch. Snell cashed in with a long-term deal with the Dodgers, so he is well positioned to log double-digit wins for the third time in his career. He's topped 130 frames in a season just twice in his eight full MLB campaigns, so fantasy managers shouldn't be counting on more than 20-to-25 starts. However, Snell won the Cy Young Award in those other two seasons, so he could be a league-winning pitcher if he's able to stay healthy.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: No-throw until Monday

Snell (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing until Monday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. Manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that the team doesn't plan to give Snell any treatment while he's shut down, instead deciding to see how he responds to several days of rest. A timeline for his return will likely emerge once he's cleared to resume throwing, though a minimum-length stay on the IL is almost certainly off the table.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Hopes for short-term absence

Snell revealed Monday that he had been dealing with left shoulder inflammation for the past three weeks before landing on the injured list Sunday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Snell thought he could pitch through the issue and that it would eventually subside, but he was unable to get through his last bullpen session, necessitating an IL move. The southpaw hopes to miss only a couple weeks of action, but it would not be a surprise if the Dodgers exercise more caution with their $182 million investment. Los Angeles will expand its rotation to six men this week, and Justin Wrobleski and Landon Knack are expected to be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the two openings Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Shut down with shoulder swelling

The Dodgers placed Snell on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to left shoulder inflammation. According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, Snell completed a bullpen session Sunday and informed the Los Angeles training staff afterward that his shoulder was bothering him. Rather than reassessing Snell in a few days and seeing if the inflammation dissipates, the Dodgers will send him to the IL, making him ineligible to pitch again for the big club until April 18. The Dodgers recalled right-hander Matt Sauer from Triple-A Oklahoma City to provide coverage in the bullpen in the short term, but Snell's absence means that the team will need to break in a new rotation member Tuesday in Washington.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Struggles through four frames

Snell allowed five unearned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two batters over four innings in a no-decision against Atlanta on Wednesday. Snell got no favors from his defense Wednesday, as Max Muncy committed a pair of early throwing errors and Andy Pages misplayed a flyball to center field that was courteously ruled a double. The errors prevented Snell from being charged with any earned runs, but he didn't help his own cause by issuing four free passes and uncorking a wild pitch. To his credit, Snell kept the Dodgers from falling into a deeper deficit after Atlanta took a 5-0 lead through two innings, and the southpaw managed to retire seven of the final nine batters he faced. Snell has had poor control early in his Dodgers tenure, as he's now walked eight batters over his first nine innings of the campaign. Walks have been an issue for him at various points in his career, but they've typically come with bunches of strikeouts; however, Snell has just four punchouts in his nine frames so far. That being said, there's no reason for fantasy managers to panic this early in the campaign, especially since Snell was a mess during his first handful of outings last year before turning things around and finishing in dominant form. He is tentatively slated to make his next start against Washington next week.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Works through trouble for win

Snell (1-0) allowed two earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two across five innings to earn the win Thursday against the Tigers. Snell managed to limit runs and complete five innings to earn the win, though it wasn't a sharp debut with the Dodgers. He found the zone with only 53 of his 92 pitches and allowed multiple baserunners in three of his five frames. Snell will likely continue to run a relatively elevated walk rate based on his track record, but he should be able to pile up strikeouts more consistently in upcoming starts.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Named domestic Opening Day starter

Snell has been officially named as the Dodgers' starter for Thursday's home opener against the Tigers, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Snell will draw his first start as a Dodger when the team resumes its regular season against the Tigers after winning both of its matchups in Japan against the Cubs on March 18 and 19. The left-hander produced a 3.12 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 145 strikeouts over 104 innings in 20 starts with the Giants in 2024, and he'll look to keep it up with Los Angeles in 2025.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Will likely start stateside opener

Snell is slated to pitch in one of two exhibition games in Tokyo, Japan on March 15 and 16, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts implied that the southpaw will start the team's home regular-season opener in Los Angeles on March 27, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. A pair of Japanese-born hurlers -- Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki -- have been tabbed to start for the Dodgers in the regular-season-opening two-game series against the Cubs in Tokyo on March 18 and 19, but it doesn't appear that either of those pitchers will get the ball again for the team's stateside opener against Detroit on March 27. Instead, Snell is likely to get the call for that contest after joining Los Angeles on a five-year, $182 million contract in late November. Snell made his second spring start Sunday against the Athletics and gave up four runs on five hits over 3.2 innings, but he struck out five batters, averaged 95.2 mph on his fastball and threw 67 pitches, so he appears to be ramping up well for the regular season.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Hurls scoreless frame in LA debut

Snell threw one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in a Cactus League contest against Seattle on Tuesday. Snell threw at least eight pitches to three of the four batters he faced, so he racked up a hearty pitch count of 30 despite allowing just one baserunner. Per Statcast, the lefty's fastball sat at 95-to-96 mph, which is right in line with where it's been over the past several seasons. After signing a five-year contract in November, Snell is slated to be part of a revamped Dodgers rotation that, on paper, looks to be one of the best in the big leagues.

  • Dodgers' Blake Snell: Joins reigning champs

Snell signed a five-year, $182 million contract with the Dodgers on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 20 starts during his lone season with the Giants, Snell has now earned himself a long-term deal to stay in the NL West. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will be joining an already impressive Dodgers rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Shohei Ohtani (shoulder).

  • Blake Snell: Free agent after declining option

Snell declined his $30 million player option for 2025 on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Snell probably would have stuck around had he been forced to make his decision following a slow start to his 2024 campaign. However, after collecting a microscopic 1.23 ERA and 114:30 K:BB over 80.1 innings over his final 14 starts, hitting the free-agent market again was a no-brainer. Presumably, Snell will stand a better chance this time around at landing the lucrative, multi-year deal he had looked for last winter.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Dominant vs. Orioles

Snell (4-3) earned the win Tuesday over Baltimore, allowing just one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out 12. Snell was superb Tuesday, allowing a lone single in the second inning while racking up double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this year. The 31-year-old Snell has held opponents to two runs or fewer in 12 of his last 13 starts, posting a stellar 1.33 ERA in that span (74.1 innings). His ERA is down to 3.31 across 98 innings this season with a 1.08 WHIP and 136:43 K:BB. Snell's currently in line for a road start this weekend against the Royals.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Fans eight in third win

Snell (3-3) picked up the win over the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight. Both walks and three of the four hits against Snell in the contest came over the first three innings. The lefty would then allow just one batter to reach over his final two frames while generating 17 swinging strikes on the night. The win was Snell's first since Aug. 7 against Washington, and he's now recorded eight or more strikeouts in eight of his last nine outings (excluding his previous start in which he was pulled after just one inning). He also hasn't allowed more than three runs in any outing since June 2 against the Yankees.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Pulled after one inning

Snell did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks over one inning against the Diamondbacks. He struck out two. Snell needed 42 pitches to escape the first inning thanks to a combination of a lack of control along with a lack of help from his defense. Snell was not hit hard, with only one ball leaving the infield but was done in by an infield single, a couple of walks, a throwing error that led to one run and a passed ball on a strikeout that was to have represented the third out and instead resulted in a second run crossing the plate. Despite only allowing one earned run, Snell's outing was complete following the inning. He entered the game with a 1.30 ERA over his previous 10 appearances while having struck out 10 or more four times while allowing one run or less during seven of those performances. He's next slated to take the hill when the Giants head to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Sharp in no-decision

Snell allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Friday. After a mixed bag in Seattle for his last start -- three hitless innings with two runs allowed on six walks -- Snell was back in control Friday. The southpaw has earned a quality start in eight of his last nine outings, though this was just the third time in that span he's limited opponents to one walk or fewer. Snell has been nearly untouchable since the start of July and now has a 3.56 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 114:37 K:BB through 86 innings over 16 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Diamondbacks.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Fans eight in second win

Snell (2-3) picked up the win in Wednesday's 7-4 victory over the Nationals, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. The veteran lefty stumbled a bit in the third inning, allowing all three of his runs, including a two-run shot by Juan Yepez, but otherwise Snell had little trouble with the Washington lineup and generated 32 called or swinging strikes among his 93 pitches. It was a strong follow-up performance to his no-hitter against the Reds on Aug. 2, and Snell has reeled off five straight quality starts with a 1.32 ERA, 0.56 WHIP and 46:8 K:BB through 34 innings during that hot streak. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against Atlanta.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Fires first career no-no

Snell (1-3) issued three walks while allowing no runs in a no-hitter against the Reds on Friday. He struck out 11 in the 3-0 win. Snell issued a walk in the second inning and two more in the fifth before retiring the last 13 batters he faced. He forced 21 swinging strikes on 114 pitches, including 10 via the curveball. Not only was it his first career no-hitter, but it was also his first career complete game. Snell is starting to look more like the Cy Young-winning version of himself after a rough start to the year. Since returning from the injured list a second time, he owns a sharp 0.55 ERA with a 41:10 K:BB over 33 innings. In his last two starts alone he's racked up 26 punchouts in 15 frames. Snell will carry a 4.29 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be in Washington.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Career-high 15 Ks in no-decision

Snell recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts while giving up two hits two walks over six scoreless innings in a no-decision Saturday in the Giants' 4-1 win over the Rockies in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The 15 strikeouts were one shy of the franchise record, and it was the most in a single game by a Giants pitcher since Tim Lincecum in 2009. In spite of the incredible performance, Snell was still denied his first win of the season, as he departed the game with a 1-0 lead before reliever Ryan Walker gave up the tying run to the Rockies in the top of the seventh inning. After a rough start to his tenure with the Giants, Snell has started to resemble the Cy Young Award-winning pitcher he was with the Padres in 2023. Over his four July starts, Snell has posted an 0.75 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB in 24 innings. He's the first Giants pitcher since 1911 to record at least 30 strikeouts while allowing fewer than 10 hits in a four-game stretch.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Submits another quality start

Snell allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Monday. Snell's scoreless streak ended when Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and the Dodgers' outfielder added a second run off the lefty with an RBI single in the sixth. It was still Snell's second quality start in a row, and it's all the more impressive he was able to put in a good effort against a tough opponent. While his ERA is at 5.83 with a 1.37 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB over 41.2 innings, he's trending in the right direction now that he appears to be fully healthy. His next start is expected to come at home versus the Rockies.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Fantastic against Twins

Snell allowed one hit and struck out eight without walking a batter over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Sunday. Snell carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, and he faced the minimum in his start by erasing the one hit he gave up with a double play. The left-hander was denied the win after Camilo Doval blew a save opportunity, but the Giants bounced back for the team victory. Snell has allowed two hits and three walks over 12 innings since returning from a groin injury, finally showing his skills after an injury-riddled start to 2024. He has a 6.31 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 42:17 K:BB through 35.2 innings over eight starts, but he should be considered a buy-low target in fantasy.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Taken off IL, starting Tuesday

The Giants reinstated Snell (groin) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Snell wrapped up his second IL stint of the season with a dominant rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, when he gave up just one walk while striking out nine over five shutout innings. Tuesday will mark Snell's first start since June 2 against the Yankees, and across his six major-league starts this season he has a 9.51 ERA and 1.94 WHIP across 23.2 innings. To make room on the 26-man roster for Snell, the Giants optioned left-hander Kolton Ingram to Sacramento.
