Luis Severino settled for a one-year, "pillow" contract from the Mets last offseason and went on to make 30-plus starts for the first time since 2018. The right-hander incorporated a sinker as one of his primary pitches for the first time in his career and also mostly ditched his slider in favor of a sweeper. The pitch mix change resulted in just a 21.2 percent strikeout rate, although in his final 13 starts between the regular season and playoffs he upped that rate to 24.8 percent. If Severino is now more willing to sacrifice swings and misses for contact earlier in counts, it could make him more of a floor than a ceiling play. He'll experience contextual downgrades across the board after signing a three-year deal with the Athletics, which also works to cap his ceiling in the wins department.

    Severino allowed five runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out three batters over seven innings in a loss to San Diego on Monday. Severino got off to a rough start, surrendering three runs in the first inning. He then held the Padres to just one more run over the following five frames, but a Fernando Tatis solo homer in the seventh inning put him behind 5-3 upon his exit rom the game. Severino had trouble missing bats in the outing -- he notched just two whiffs among his 96 pitches -- but he at least continued to eat up innings for the A's, and he's now gone at least six frames in each of his first three starts. However, his record stands at 0-2, and he's given up four homers over 19 frames while posting a 4.74 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

    Severino (0-1) took the loss to the Cubs on Tuesday, coughing up six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six. After an impressive Opening Day debut for the A's, Severino crashed back to earth Tuesday. Three of the six hits against the right-hander went for extra bases, including a three-run blast by Seiya Suzuki in the first inning before Severino had even recorded an out, and a solo shot by the red-hot Kyle Tucker in the third.
