Carlos Rodon bounced back from a terrible 2023 debut with the Yankees with a respectable 2024 season. It is a rarity these days to see a pitcher earn a decision in 78 percent of their starts, but Rodon earned 16 wins and nine losses in 32 starts while nearly matching his career high for innings set in 2022. Rodon's 16 wins and 195 strikeouts were welcomed contributions to both the Yankees' roster and many fantasy rosters, but the ratios were not nearly as welcome. The 1.22 WHIP was not as bad as the 3.96 ERA, and the latter can be directly tied to the 1.6 HR/9 Rodon pitched to last season. The popular thought is Yankee Stadium punishes him, when in fact he has permitted more homers on the road (24) than at home (22) since joining the Yankees. The home run issue was extremely prevalent in 2024 off his fastball, as 21 of his 31 homers came off a fastball that has become much more hittable lately than it was prior to him joining the Yankees. Rodon added a cutter in 2024 while dialing back the fastball to help offset that damage, but the fact remains Rodon's fastball is not what it once was. He needs a usable third pitch against righties, because they are inflicting nearly all the home run damage of late, hitting 40 of the 46 homers off the southpaw.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Tagged with six runs

Rodon (1-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks over six-plus innings Monday, striking out eight and taking a loss against Detroit. Rodon retired the first seven batters he faced, but Andy Ibanez broke the dam with a three-run blast in the third inning. Justyn-Henry Malloy knocked a two-run single in the fifth and Detroit scored one more run in the seventh after chasing Rodon from the contest. After picking up a win in his season debut, Rodon has been charged with nine earned runs over 12 innings in his last two outings. His ERA has jumped to 5.19 with a 20:9 K:BB through 17.1 frames. Rodon's next start is projected to be this weekend at home against the Giants.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Takes line drive off pitching arm

Rodon took a line drive off the bat of Ketel Marte in the fifth inning of Wednesday night's loss to the Diamondbacks, and while he had a bruise and wrap on his arm, an X-ray on the arm came back clean, Gary Phillips of The New York Daily News reports. Rodon allowed four early runs, but he ultimately retired the last 10 batters he faced to complete six innings, giving up three hits and four walks while striking out five. Rodon also struggled with his velocity early on, averaging 93 mph for the start after averaging 94.5 mph Opening Day. He was also seen looking at his pitching hand throughout the start. "I tend to look pretty often," Rodon said of his frequent glances toward Yankee Stadium's radar gun, "but definitely down velo today. A little cold, just slow to get moving, but I'm not super worried about it."

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Picks up win Opening Day

Rodon (1-0) earned the win Thursday versus Milwaukee, striking out seven and giving up one run on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. The left-hander generated 13 swinging strikes and six groundball outs on 89 pitches, with the only damage against him coming via a solo homer by Vinny Capra during the third inning. Rodon had some command issues during spring training with six walks and two wild pitches in 10 frames, but he was more in control during his season debut. A matchup with the Diamondbacks likely awaits next week for his second start of 2025.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Ends exhibition slate in fine form

Rodon hurled 4.2 scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Tigers on Friday, allowing three hits and issuing three walks while striking out five batters. Rodon was a bit wild in the outing, as he threw just 45 of 77 pitches for strikes and handed out three free passes. However, he didn't give up any extra-base hits and got three of his five strikeouts on changeups. Rodon concluded the exhibition slate with a 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB over 10 innings. His next start is scheduled for Opening Day against Milwaukee.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Tapped for Opening Day

Manager Aaron Boone announced Friday that Rodon will start Opening Day against the Brewers on March 27, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. The left-hander will step in as the Yankees' Opening Day starter with Gerrit Cole (elbow) lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Rodon struggled during his first year in the Bronx during 2023 with a 6.85 ERA in 14 regular-season starts, but he rebounded last season and finished with a 3.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195:57 K:BB across 175 regular-season innings.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Candidate to start Opening Day

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Max Fried "might not line up" to be the team's Opening Day starter, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports, making Rodon a possibility for the assignment. Gerrit Cole was the logical choice to start Opening Day for New York until he hurt his elbow and was diagnosed as needing Tommy John surgery. Fried would make sense to step in for the Opening Day honor, but the team may elect to not tinker with his schedule. If Fried isn't assigned the role, Rodon would be next in line given his standing as the Yankees No. 2 starter sans Cole and Luis Gil (lat). Rodon hasn't pitched in a spring game since Feb. 27, and it isn't clear when he'll make his next Grapefruit League appearance, but the Yankees haven't indicated that he's dealing with an injury or illness. Boone indicated Tuesday that the team is expected to announce an Opening Day starter in the next few days.

Rodon allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Thursday. Rodon struck out three batters in a scoreless first inning, but he then allowed a two-run homer to Johan Rojas in the second. The veteran lefty pitched into the third, departing with two outs after giving up a run-scoring double. Rodon has yielded six runs over 5.1 frames through two spring starts, but he's building up his pitch count nicely, throwing 57 pitches Thursday.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Struggles in spring debut

Rodon tossed 2.2 innings against Toronto in Grapefruit League play Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one batter. It wasn't a great exhibition debut for Rodon, though he wasn't hit particularly hard -- all five knocks against him were singles. The veteran lefty did log a promising workload with 48 pitches, and his changeup usage was up from his norm last season, which could be an indication of his plans to adjust for the coming campaign after opponents belted 21 homers off his four-seamer last year. Rodon is expected to slot third in the Yankees' rotation behind Gerrit Cole and Max Fried.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Blister issue considered manageable

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that the blister issue Rodon dealt with during his World Series Game 2 start is "manageable" and is not expected to prevent him from making another start, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. The blister might have affected Rodon's command against the Dodgers, particularly with his slider. However, it does not appear he's in danger of missing a start, which is tentatively slated for Friday in Game 6, if necessary. Rodon yielded three home runs and four runs in total in his Game 2 loss.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Taking ball in Game 2

Rodon will start Saturday in Game 2 of the World Series against the Dodgers, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. The southpaw was the obvious choice to follow Game 1 starter Gerrit Cole, and Rodon revealed Thursday that he's been told he will indeed take the ball in Game 2. In three starts so far this postseason, Rodon holds a 4.40 ERA and 22:1 K:BB over 14.1 frames. He will be opposed by Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Rodon will get the start against Cleveland in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Monday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. Rodon's most recent start was in Game 2 of the ALDS on Oct. 7, when he took the loss against Kansas City. In that contest, the left-hander gave up four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings. Rodon posted a 3.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195:57 K:BB over 175 frames during the regular season and led New York with 16 victories. • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Slated for Game 2 start

Rodon will start Oct. 7 in Game 2 of the ALDS, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Rodon will follow Game 1 starter Gerrit Cole against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. The lefty went through his fair share of ups and downs during the regular season, but he finished on an upswing in September, collecting a 2.20 ERA and 34:10 K:BB over 28.2 frames covering five starts.

It was just the third time that Rodon walked four or more batters out of his 32 starts this season. On the bright side, he forced 17 whiffs, including eight with his fastball. Rodon threw at least five innings in each of his last seven starts, posting a 2.68 ERA during that span. He ends the 2024 regular season with a 3.96 ERA and a 195:57 K:BB through 175 frames.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Dominant over six frames

Rodon (16-9) picked up the win over the Athletics on Saturday, allowing five hits and one walk over six scoreless innings while striking out four. Already enjoying a 2-0 lead by the time he took the mound, Rodon proceeded to shut out the Athletics over six frames despite allowing at least one hit in five of those innings. It marked the second time in his last six starts that the veteran southpaw has hurled six shutout innings, and he's now pitched to the tune of a 1.93 ERA in September through four starts while posting a 2-0 record. Rodon has also held his opponents to two or fewer runs in four consecutive outings to open the month.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Stymies rival to earn 15th win

Rodon (15-9) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out five. Rodon served up a third-inning homer to Tyler O'Neill, the fifth long ball he's allowed over the past four starts, but otherwise held the Red Sox in check to collect his 15th win. Rodon recorded one out following a leadoff double in the sixth but was subsequently pulled after 88 pitches, rendering him two outs shy of a quality start. It was the seventh time in his last 10 starts that Rodon has allowed two runs or fewer over five or more innings, and he has posted a 3.18 ERA across 56.2 innings with 74 strikeouts over that stretch. The veteran lefty is excelling as the Yankees are making their push toward the AL East pennant. Next up for the surging Rodon is a matchup in Oakland against the hapless A's.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Nabs quality start

Rodon didn't factor into the decision Monday against Kansas City, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk across six innings. He struck out nine. Rodon fanned eight or more batters for a third straight start but gave up his third and fourth home runs of that stretch Monday. Both long balls charged to Rodon were solo shots, coming off the bats of Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe. Still, the left-handed pitcher held on for the quality start. Rodon is tentatively scheduled for a home start against the Red Sox this weekend.

  • Yankees' Carlos Rodon: Fans 11 in no-decision

Rodon allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out 11 over six innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Tuesday. The lone hit run on Rodon's line was a solo home run by Josh Jung in the fourth inning. The Yankees pulled ahead 2-1 in the seventh, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead, denying Rodon his 15th victory of the year. It was still an excellent performance for the southpaw, who has alternated between good and poor outings since the start of August. He's allowed 13 runs over 32 innings in that span and now has a 4.19 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 172:49 K:BB through 152.1 innings overall. Rodon's next start is projected to be at home versus the Royals.

Rodon (14-9) took the loss against Washington on Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over 5.2 innings. Rodon fell behind on his second pitch of the game when he served up Dylan Crews' first major-league homer. Things didn't get much better for the southpaw from there, as he gave up another run in the first frame, two more in the second and a fifth and final run in the fourth. Rodon managed to induce 16 whiffs and notch a healthy eight punchouts, but he also had five bases stolen on his watch and was bit by a wild pitch and a balk. The veteran hurler has been frustratingly inconsistent of late -- he's hurled two scoreless outings among his past five starts, but in the other three appearances during that stretch he's given up a combined 12 runs over 14.1 innings.

On the season, he owns a 4.16 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 153:45 K:BB across 140.2 innings and lines up to face the Nationals on the road next week.
