MacKenzie Gore set new bests with 32 starts and 166.1 innings. His strikeout and walk rates were like the previous season but he did a much better job keeping the ball in the yard. Unfortunately, a .340 BABIP and 68.1 percent left-on-base mark sabotaged his effort, especially WHIP where his 1.42 mark was third worst among qualified pitchers. An inordinately high line-drive rate bloated his BABIP, so Gore should enjoy some regression in that area this season. Gore didn't alter his pitch mix or location much, but he added a tick to his fastball and slider while taking something off his curve and changeup, which helped keep hitters off balance. Gore has established durability, now he needs to fine-tune his control to become more than a fantasy streaming option. Entering his 26-year-old season, it's worth taking the chance he can achieve it.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Fans seven in victory

Gore (1-1) earned the win Monday against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out seven. Gore stifled the star-studded Dodgers, generating an impressive 15 whiffs in this 100-pitch outing. The only blemish on the Washington left-hander's outing was a two-run homer yielded to Shohei Ohtani in the third inning. Gore has opened his season on an impressive run, pitching to a 2.65 ERA, supported by a 2.38 FIP, with 25:3 K:BB across 17 innings. The 26-year-old currently lines up to make his next start at Miami this weekend.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Gives up three runs in loss

Gore (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Blue Jays. He allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings. Gore allowed only one hit in his Opening Day start against the Phillies on March 27, but he ran into more trouble Wednesday. Despite generating 18 first-pitch strikes and 12 whiffs, Gore allowed at least one baserunner in four of the five innings he worked, though he limited the damage to three runs by stranding eight men on base. The 26-year-old southpaw will look to earn his first win of the 2025 season in his next start, which is tentatively slated next week at home against the Dodgers.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Dominates with six one-hit innings

Gore didn't factor into the decision Thursday after allowing one hit over six scoreless innings during a loss to the Phillies. He struck out 13 without walking a batter. It was a brilliant showing by the southpaw, whose dominance notably came against a star-studded Phillies lineup. A Kyle Schwarber single in the second inning would end up spoiling what was an otherwise perfect outing from Gore, who starts his third full major-league season looking to take a big step forward. Per Chad Jennings of The Athletic, Hall of Famer Bob Gibson is the only other pitcher in MLB history to strike out at least 13 batters on Opening Day without giving up a run or issuing a walk.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Locked in for Opening Day start

The Nationals announced Monday that Gore will start the team's March 27 season opener versus the Phillies in Washington. Coming off a 2024 season in which he submitted a 3.90 ERA and struck out 181 batters over 166.1 innings, Gore entered the spring as the odds-on favorite to receive the Opening Day nod. The 25-year-old southpaw only strengthened his case to begin the season at the front of the rotation after breezing through his first two Grapefruit League starts, covering 8.1 scoreless innings while striking out 10 and scattering four hits and four walks. Gore will make his third start of the spring Monday versus the Cardinals and should have one more tune-up outing this weekend before taking the hill Opening Day.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: No longer starting Saturday

Gore is no longer scheduled to start Saturday's Grapefruit League opener against the Astros, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Jake Irvin is now listed as the starter for the first game of the exhibition slate, but there is no reported injury to Gore. Instead, this is a matter of Gore preferring to build up to the point of potentially reaching two innings in his spring debut, and the Nationals accommodating the left-hander's request and keeping him on the side for an additional live batting practice session. Gore still seems like the frontrunner for the Opening Day nod in 2025.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Avoids arbitration

The Nationals and Gore avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract worth $2.9 million Thursday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Gore had an uneven but ultimately pretty encouraging 2024 season, finishing with a 3.90 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 181:65 K:BB over 166.1 innings covering a career-high 32 starts. He'll be a key rotation piece for the Nationals again in 2025.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Flirts with no-hitter

Gore (10-12) got the win Saturday against the Cubs, allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out nine over seven innings. Gore took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the first time in his career, but he proceeded to allow a solo homer to Patrick Wisdom. Gore has put together a strong run of five quality starts in his last six outings, with a 1.82 ERA in that stretch, and he's reached double-digit wins for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old enters his final start of the season with a 4.04 ERA and 172 strikeouts in 160.1 innings.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Early exit in Tuesday's loss

Gore (8-12) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up seven runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings as the Nationals were routed 12-0 by Atlanta. He struck out three. Some shaky defense by the Nats, including an error by Jose Tena and a catcher's interference call on Keibert Ruiz, helped soften the blow to Gore's ERA, but it was still a hard fall back to Earth for the southpaw after he'd delivered three straight quality starts. Since the beginning of August, Gore has a 1.57 WHIP and 36:15 K:BB through 36.1 innings while serving up five homers, but only a 3.72 ERA thanks to 11 total unearned runs. He lines up to pitch at home this weekend against the Marlins.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Tames Yankees for eighth victory

Gore (8-11) earned the win over the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings. Gore racked up 14 whiffs and finished with just his second victory over his past 13 starts. The southpaw allowed a second-inning solo homer to Jazz Chisholm but gave up just one additional run from that point on. Gore had an 11-start stretch without a quality start between mid-June and mid-August, during which he posted a 6.75 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 45:31 K:BB over 50.2 innings. He may be turning things around, however, as he's now notched consecutive quality starts, allowing just three runs while registering a 10:1 K:BB across 12 frames over that span.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Walks six in 10th loss

Gore (7-10) was saddled with the loss Sunday, allowing five runs (zero earned) on five hits and six walks over four innings against the Angels. He struck out two. Gore produced a bit of a weird line, as it was just the second time all year he failed to allow an earned run, thanks to a fielding error by Jose Tena that directly allowed one run to score and helped set up four more. That's where Gore took over, walking four of a season-high six batters in the fateful fourth that culminated with a bases-clearing double by Kevin Pillar. Gore was removed after the inning and saddled with his 10th loss of the season. Gore was coming off his first win in nearly two months following his last start and will look to rebound in his next slated matchup, against the Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Fans just one batter in defeat

Gore (6-9) took the loss against Arizona on Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out one batter over 5.1 innings. Though he's been up-and-down in terms of allowing runs this season, Gore entered Wednesday's contest with a healthy 10.3 K/9 over 105.2 frames. It comes as a surprise, then, to see just one punchout on his final stat line, though it's the second time he's posted that total over his past seven starts. In fact, Gore's production has been quite poor over that span, as he's recorded a 7.84 ERA and 24:19 K:BB over 31 innings. It appeared at times earlier in the campaign that Gore could be in the midst of a breakout, but he hasn't picked up a win since mid-June and is now sporting a 4.54 ERA, which would be the worst mark of his three-year career.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Coughs up six runs

Gore yielded six runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out three during the extra-inning win over St. Louis. Most of the damage against Gore came during a disastrous third inning. He served up a two-run shot to Masyn Winn, and that was followed by a three-run blast from Nolan Arenado. After posting a terrific 2.91 ERA through the end of May, Gore has registered a 6.51 ERA since the start of June. He now owns a 4.51 ERA with a 121:43 K:BB through 105.2 innings this season. His next start is projected to be in Arizona.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Struggles in short start

Gore allowed three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out two batters over two innings in a no-decision against Cincinnati on Saturday. Gore allowed a pair of runs in the first inning and another in the second before giving way to a reliever. He needed 67 pitches to get through the pair of frames, and only 37 of his offerings were strikes. All three of the runners who scored against Gore got aboard by way of a walk, and the southpaw's four free passes tied his second-highest mark this season. This was Gore's shortest start of the campaign and the third straight outing in which he has failed to complete five frames. Over that span, he's given up 12 earned runs over 10 innings.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Yields five runs in loss

Gore (6-7) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one over five innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Padres. Gore struggled against the team that drafted him, as the Padres put up multiple runs in the first and fifth innings. He may have been rattled by the two teams clearing the benches in the first inning after Keibert Ruiz and Jurickson Profar exchanged words -- Gore's next pitch hit Profar on the back foot, and the one after that was crushed by Manny Machado for a two-run homer. The southpaw has lost three of his five starts in June, giving up 18 runs (17 earned) over 26.1 innings. He's now at a 3.81 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 99:28 K:BB through 85 innings across 16 starts on the year. Gore is projected to make his next start at home versus the Mets.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Start pushed back to Friday

Gore won't start Thursday against the Tigers in Detroit as previously scheduled and will instead take the hill Friday versus the Marlins in Washington while he recovers from a fingernail issue, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The Nationals will have Patrick Corbin take the hill Thursday in order to build in an extra day of recovery time for Gore. Though Gore is currently in line to take the hill Friday, fantasy managers will want to ensure he hasn't suffered a setback with the fingernail issue leading up to the series opener with Miami that may prompt the Nationals to push him back in the schedule. Gore will head into the weekend with a 5-5 record, 3.57 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 68 innings on the season.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Roughed up in loss

Gore (4-5) took the loss Monday against the Mets, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out two. Gore loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning before departing, unfortunately reliever Dylan Floro allowed all three runners to score, adding three earned runs to Gore's stat line. Monday's outing was very uncharacteristic for the southpaw, who recorded a season-low two strikeouts and allowed more than two earned runs for the first time since April 19. After tonight's rough outing, the 25-year-old sports a 3.57 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. Gore will look to rebound in his next start, tentatively scheduled for this weekend versus Atlanta.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Labors through three frames

Gore did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over three innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four. Gore needed 76 pitches to get through three innings, with a second-inning grand slam by Vladimir Guerrero serving as the biggest blow. The silver lining for fantasy managers is that Guerrero's blast did not hurt Gore's stat line as two errors in the inning, including a fielding error by Gore, rendered each of those runs unearned. It was the shortest outing of the season for Gore, who has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any contest. He'll carry a 3.44 ERA into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place next weekend when the Nationals travel to Fenway Park to take on the Red Sox.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Punches out seven

Gore (2-3) was hit with the loss Tuesday versus Texas after giving up two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven batters across five innings. Gore managed to keep the Rangers off the scoreboard for the first three innings, but an RBI single from Jonah Heim in the fourth followed by a fielder's choice in the fifth was all it took for Texas to take the lead over Washington and hand Gore his third consecutive loss. Despite his record, the 25-year-old lefty still owns a 3.19 ERA and 1.35 WHIP on the year and has struck out at least six batters in four of his six starts. He's projected to start on the mound again Sunday against Toronto.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Takes loss despite quality start

Gore (2-2) took the loss against the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings. Gore held the vaunted Dodgers offense mostly in check and notched his first quality start of the campaign, but he still was handed a loss as Washington's offense couldn't figure out Los Angeles starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The outing marked the first time this season Gore has completed six innings, and it was a nice bounce-back after he gave up three runs over a season-low four frames versus Houston his last time out. Gore holds a 3.12 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 31:8 K:BB over 26 innings on the season.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Inefficient in first loss

Gore (2-1) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings as the Nationals were downed 5-3 by the Astros. He struck out four. The southpaw needed 92 pitches (64 strikes) to record his 12 outs, and all the damage off Gore came in the second inning when Houston led off the frame with back-to-back-to-back doubles. It was Gore's shortest outing so far in 2024, and he'll take a 3.60 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB through 20 innings into his next start, which lines up for a tough home tilt against the Dodgers next week.
