Tomoyuki Sugano was posted by the Yomiuri Giants prior to the 2021 season, when he was a 31-year-old coming off a season in which he recorded a 1.97 ERA and 0.89 WHIP, but he failed to land with an MLB club and wound up returning to Japan. Given his age, that seemed like the end of his MLB dream, especially when his ERA rose north of 3.00 and sat right around league average for three straight seasons. But 2024 was a renaissance campaign for the veteran righty, who cruised to a 1.67 ERA and 0.95 in 24 starts, and his second attempt at coming stateside landed him a one-year, $13 million deal with the Orioles. With career NPB numbers that rival those of Masahiro Tanaka and Kenta Maeda, Sugano could have been a mid-rotation MLB starter or better at his peak, but this version looks much more borderline. Sugano possesses a six-pitch mix and showed elite control (2.6 BB%) last year, but his fastball averages a modest 92 mph and his low strikeout rate (18.3%) means he could allow an uncomfortable amount of balls in play against the best hitters in the world.

  • Orioles' Tomoyuki Sugano: Strong showing for first win

Sugano (1-1) allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out four across 5.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against the Royals. Sugano had a shaky MLB debut that ended early due to cramps, but he managed to bounce back Saturday to earn his first MLB win. He began 17 of the 23 batters he faced with a strike and induced several softly hit flyballs for easy outs. Unsurprisingly, Sugano hasn't showcased overpowering stuff early in his big-league sample, but he has been capable of limiting runs and should be in line for plenty of wins with the support of the Baltimore offense.

  • Orioles' Tomoyuki Sugano: Cleared for next start

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Sugano has been cleared to make his next start this weekend in Kansas City after experiencing cramping in both of his hands during his MLB debut Sunday versus Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Sugano said after the game that he's previously dealt with hand cramps at various points during his playing career in Japan, but neither he nor the Orioles are concerned about his health moving forward. Before exiting his start Sunday, Sugano gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one batter over four innings.

  • Orioles' Tomoyuki Sugano: Leaves early due to cramps

The Orioles announced that Sugano was removed from Sunday's game against the Blue Jays in the fifth inning due to cramps, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Before being pulled from the game prior to the bottom of the fifth inning, Sugano had a team trainer check out his hand. While it's unclear if the cramping he experienced was in his pitching hand or elsewhere on his body, the issue doesn't seem to be a major concern for the 35-year-old rookie, who gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one over four frames in his MLB debut. Sugano tentatively lines up to make his next turn in the rotation Saturday in Kansas City, and he should be ready to take the hill that day if he makes it through his between-starts bullpen session without any complications.

  • Orioles' Tomoyuki Sugano: Makes spring debut

Sugano gave up two hits and a walk over two scoreless innings during his Grapefruit League debut against the Pirates on Wednesday. The Orioles anticipated Sugano throwing 35-to-40 pitches during his first spring outing, but the 35-year-old righty was able to get through his scheduled two innings on just 28 pitches -- 17 of which were strikes. He said after the game that he was primarily focused on getting used to pitching in a new environment and communicating with his catcher, and he'll look to work more on pitch sequencing during his next start, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. Sugano is expected to open the year in Baltimore's starting rotation after turning in a 1.67 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 156.2 innings in Japan last season.

  • Orioles' Tomoyuki Sugano: Reports to camp

Sugano reported to Orioles camp Saturday. Sugano's arrival was delayed a few days due to visa issues, but he's now managed to make his way to the Orioles' facility in Florida without falling too far behind. He expects to throw his first bullpen session Monday, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com, and the 35-year-old righty is projected to open the season in Baltimore's starting rotation.
