When I was a teenager growing up in Korea, beauty trends seemed to be all about Korean lip tints. The goal was never to make the lips look bigger; instead, Korean women focused the color of their lip products on the center of their lips, blurring it out as it reached the perimeter to create a gradient. This effectively made their lips look smaller and daintier, which was the complete opposite of the “bigger is better” mindset we adopted in the States, especially in a post-Kylie Jenner lip kit era.
However, the tide shifted, and Korean women started gravitating toward lip filler and re-adopting lip liners to create a plumper, more voluminous effect. “Lip liners have definitely become more popular in Korea over the past few years,” says Haley Kim, a New York City-based Korean makeup artist.“While I’m not living there now, I’ve noticed a rise in new lip liner products and brands online.”
Our top picks for the best Korean lip liners of 2025
While some Korean lip liners are in that traditional wooden pencil format, you’ll notice that most of the popular ones aren’t as precise as Western options. Think: Rhode’s Peptide Lip Shape or Refy’s Blur Liner. “The tip size is usually larger, and it’s easier to blend into your natural lips for a softer finish,” Kim explains. “Also, Korean lip liners offer a more natural look with sheerer pigments compared to Western ones.” The resulting look softly blurs the edge of the lip line out—in other words, you’re overlining, but it doesn’t look as harsh or unnatural.
If you’re intrigued, I’ve got your back. There are so many fantastic Korean makeup brands out there churning out top-tier products, but I’ve narrowed it down (with the help of Kim and plenty of customer reviews) to the following eight Korean lip liners you can order straight to your home.
