The acclaimed star of The White Lotus, Michelle Monaghan, has emphatically debunked a prevalent fan theory about the show's third season that has been making rounds online.
Celebrated for her performances in the Mission: Impossible saga and last year's thriller MaXXXine, Monaghan brings to life the celebrated actress Jaclyn on HBO's hit show, which sees its third season unfold.
Enthralled audiences have watched as her character’s girls’ getaway with Laurie (played by Carrie Coon) and Kate (Leslie Bibb) transforms from pleasantries to enmity amidst the exotic backdrop of Thailand’s thrill-filled nights.
As tension builds, a chilling sequence has foreshadowed a menacing shootout at the tropical retreat, leaving at least one unfortunate soul adrift in a resort pond.
With speculation rampant and only two episodes remaining before the grand finale, viewers are frenetically theorising who will be the victim, and crucially, the shooter.
Among the wilder conjectures is a theory that's gone viral, suggesting that one of the local monkeys, known to roam the resort, might seize a firearm and wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting guests.
Sharing this zany hypothesis, one X (formerly Twitter) user's post with an impressive 38,000 likes proclaims: "Guys my crazy White Lotus theory is a monkey gets a hold of a gun and just starts shooting."
Moreover, another person chimed in with: "And when all those gunshots from the opening scene of #TheWhiteLotus end up being because one of the monkeys got ahold of a gun?"
Answers will remain shrouded in mystery until next Sunday's reveal on 6th April. Meanwhile, Monaghan has issued a stark rejection of this speculation.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, the star told fans: "You know, I've just got to debunk a theory out here. Guys, the monkeys did not do it! People have gone ape s*** thinking that."
Hinting at who might be behind the mysterious events, Monaghan playfully hinted at her own character's potential involvement: "Well, I don't know. You'll have to watch. Maybe I go a little bananas. Maybe."
Teasing fans with the promise of an epic conclusion, she spilled to RadioTimes that the third season of The White Lotus will serve up a shocker, recounting how she consumed the scripts voraciously on a flight: "I found out when all eight scripts were delivered into my inbox.
"I was on a plane, on a 15-hour flight, and I read all of them – [they were] just such page-turners, of course, just like the show.
"I was just as shocked at the end as everybody else will be shocked watching it.
"You have no idea – it's the brilliance of Mike White. You have no idea what's coming, it's crazy."
Now, fans are left guessing who the next killer and victim could be in the upcoming season.
