Description of the flag

This flag was adopted by provincial decree 326, of February 13th, 1992. It is commonly known as la rusa (the Russian).
Jaume Oll, 30 Aug 2000

I note the law (on the official website) doesnt prescribe any specific ratio, nor color shades, though the blue shown is clearly a medium shade, contrasting with the celeste on the national flag, illustrated side-by-side.
Antnio Martins, 13 Dec 2001

According to art. 4 of the flag law, school parades chose for their national flag carrier the student with better grades; meanwhile the Misiones provincial flag should be carried by the student elected by his peers to be the best mate...

Origin and history of the flag

Fantasy...?

The provincial flag of Misiones is based on a flag supposedly used by the mestizo Andresito, but sources were never confirmed of verified. But it looks silly to me that Misiones choose this flag because they just wanted to have an historical flag as provincial, like Corrientes, Santa Fe, and Entre Ros and that they had to subvert history to achieve it.
Gus Tracchia, 23 Feb 2000

...or fact?

Andresito was still using the flag in 1819 when he was captured by the Portuguese while defending eastern Misiones. After the Portuguese gap [when Misiones was incorporated with Uruguay in Brazil, forming the Cisplatine Province, 1821-1828?], this flag was kept in use [as an argentine provincial flag?] until 1832, when Misiones was incorporated into Corrientes, under governor Ferr.

The provincial emblem was created by law 3769 of December 30th, 1959. The arrow and bow stand for the native population, and the two clubs represent the Spanish domination; below, the famous Iguau waterfall, the wreath is made from mate, main provincial crop.
