Municipality

The municipality of Ibirub (19,310 inhabitants in 2010; 60,746 ha) is located 300 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Ibirub was originally known as Baro de So Jacob, subsequently renamed to General Osrio. To prevent confusion with a municipality of the same name, it was renamed in 1938 to General Cmara, and eventually, for the very same reason, to Ibirub.
Ibirub was named for a Tupi-Guarani word designing a tree forming forests in Rio Grande do Sul, "pitangueira do mato" (Myrcia palustris L.), persistent and ever-growing, like the municipality).
