Municipality

The municipality of Porto Unio (35,543 inhabitants in 2020; 85,124 ha) is located on the border with Paran, 460 km north-west of Florianpolis.
Porto Unio forms a single conurbation with Unio da Vitria (Paran), the "Iguau Twins" being separated from each other only by the railway and river Iguau.

Porto Unio was settled in 1842 after the discovery of Vau, a section of river Iguau with shallow water, suitable for crossing by cattle, and also to embark and disembark when navigating the river. Renamed to Porto Unio da Vitria in 1855, the town was boosted after the establishment in 1880 of Colonel Amazonas Marcondes, a salt trader from Palmas. The colonel initiated the next year steam navigation on river Iguau, transporting cargoes and passengers.
The municipality of Porto Unio was established on 5 September 1917 in the aftermath of the Contestado War.
