Fire dreamed of water, but the first sip would be its last.

Gilde has spent her life isolated in the wild marshlands, a place too wet for the dragon to go. She’s safe there, according to her father. So why is he asking her to leave with him now that she has come of age? There is more to Gilde’s family than she knows, and debts need to be paid.

Betrayed and shattered, she wakes in a crumbling mountain castle with the beast of her nightmares. Except this dragon speaks like a man and reads books. His kindness confuses her and opens a forgotten longing in her heart, all while Gilde plans her escape from a mountain full of secrets.

This place can unveil her past and why she was sacrificed to the beast—truths that may put both their lives in danger if they can’t learn to trust each other. But how can Gilde ever trust again? Especially after she discovers what dragons truly are.

"Embergold" by Rachelle Nelson is a new favorite! Ms. Nelson weaves an enchanting story for young adults that has fairy tale and “Beauty and the Beast” vibes, while remaining its own unique story. I loved that it felt like I was reading a classic fairy tale or folk tale. From the incredible writing to the amazing world building, "Embergold" kept me glued to the page from start to finish. The world has castles and dragons and is Germanic in nature. Readers will love our heroine, Gilde, and her strength, persistence, loyalty, grit, and determination (despite the odds being stacked against her). Gilde is very relatable as she deals with anxiety, panic attacks, and health issues. I also loved the dragon and the character Wil. The romantic relationship in the story was super sweet and almost had me in tears several times. When Gilde meets the dragon, she begins to question everything she thought she knew and learns to think for herself. Ms. Nelson explores some deep themes such as what is truth, what is the true story, what is good, and what is evil. “Embergold” celebrates stories and why they matter. I loved the allegory and beautiful faith message. At times, I really did not know how things would end with certain characters. This is an exceptional story for young adults (and the young at heart) and lovers of fairy tales full of heart!

Content: I give this book a PG-13 rating. Some examples of the content: mention of someone drinking alcohol; mention of and flashbacks of domestic violence and physical abuse; rumors of insanity; a character curses, but the words aren’t actually written; blood; a main character has panic attacks; there’s a ghost and mention of spirits; the word ar*e is used; there’s a type of dark magic and people get power by sacrificing and killing others; dark wizards and oracles; someone had a child out of wedlock; an animal is harmed in self-defense; someone thinks a girl may be possessed by demons; very vague reference to possible r*pe in the past.

TW: mention of domestic violence and physical abuse; rumors of insanity and madness; panic attacks; main character possibly has complex PTSD; toxic family dynamics; very vague reference to possible r*pe in the past.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

This was such an excellent Beauty and the Beast inspired story. I loved every minute of it! Full of adventure, magic, mystery, and hidden identities. I stayed captivated by this story to the end.

Gilde is a sweet naive girl that faces health issues, betrayal, danger, and has her world turned upside down. I felt for her and cheered her on as she grew, endured, and overcame her circumstances. She made mistakes some of which were almost deadly. I loved watching her become braver and bolder standing up for her beliefs, loyalty, and love. And can we talk about the dragon aka Wil? He’s so protective and caring towards Gilde. He takes the time to help and teach her when others didn’t.

The plot starts a little slow and picks up pace as the action heats up. Several twists and revelations take Gilde on an unexpected journey and surprised her and me!

This book does lightly touch on some darker themes: vague references to prostitution, domestic abuse, fighting, wizards and human sacrifice as a dark magic source.

Read if you enjoy
✨fairytales
✨dragons
✨magic
✨good vs evil
✨betrayal
✨naive FMC
✨adventure

✨hidden castles

Spice: none
Strong language: none
Violence: mild nothing gory but see my above note on darker themes

I read this in (for all intents and purposes) one day. And I loved it. The wonderful illustrations of dying to self were especially potent in this story. Looking forward to writing a much longer review for this in Clean Fiction Magazine's Spring edition, early next year.

I thought Nelson’s next book couldn’t get any better than Sky of Seven Colors.

I was wrong.

Embergold is a touching, heart-aching tale of a young woman who longs to be known and a dragon who needs to be freed. It’s filled with rich allegorical depth worthy of C. S. Lewis, painting a beautiful picture of the grace of God.

The worldbuilding is unique and well done. I loved the Beauty and the Beast vibes—definitely an interesting spin on the classic concept!

I can only describe Nelson’s writing as bittersweet. There’s an air of sadness attached to it, mourning the brokenness of the world, but it’s sadness tinged with hope, itself a testament to better things to come. It’s refreshing.

I highly recommend this book for readers aged 13+!

This ended up being quite disappointing, from a potential four star read to a solid three and then all the way down to two, bored out of my mind stars 🙃

The beginning was great; the atmosphere and the characters felt fairytale like, the dragon with a secret and a castle full of trapped magic and curses kept me wanting more... The bond between the dragon and Gilde showed signs of a good kind of slow burn but then they left the castle and it all went to shit. Any tension or interest the story held was gone.

The worldbuilding ended up being extremely shallow and predictable, the entire embergold/dragon explaination was even worse. But yeah, eveything was just blabbed out in big chunks of wobbly exposition and nothing felt truly genuine. Not even the love story (that felt so so rushed and forced omg it was painful to read at the moments).

I was honestly debating whether to dnf it halfway through but I pushed through in hope it would get better... or just manage to surprise me. Neither ended up being the case henceme skimming the last 50ish pages and yeah, the resolution to the curse was shit. Random characters started popping up pretending they are important and so and so forth. I also wish we could've explored Gilde's relationship with her father more, wish we delved deeper into it...

So yeah, sadly this was a huge waste of my time 🤷🏻‍♀️

DNF at 30% 🫣.

It’s always difficult to step away from a book, especially when I’ve agreed to endorse it, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to continue.

While I can see that this book may resonate with many readers, I personally struggled to connect with the story. One aspect that was particularly challenging for me was the main character’s heart health issue, which is a sensitive topic for me. By the 30% mark, I realized I wasn’t able to fully engage with the narrative.

That said, I do think the book has a lot of potential, especially for readers who are drawn to character-driven stories. The writing is solid, and the premise could be very appealing to those who are interested in this kind of plot.

I believe this book will find its audience, even though it wasn’t the right fit for me. A complimentary copy was provided by the author, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is why I read fairy tales. Embergold takes the traditional story of the girl sacrificed to the dragon and retells it with a depth and insight into both the darkest parts of human life as well as the brightest. Full of mysterious forests, dangerous sea journeys, glittering treasures, and the power of true love and true friendship, this is a book I would have loved as a teenager, only to enjoy it even more as an adult.

I enjoyed following Gilde's journey, growing up among corruption that is obvious to the reader, and eventually discovering what real love and goodness look like in family and friends. The story was so thoughtfully and sensitively crafted with lots of respect for each character, even the ones who don't make the best of choices. I was especially intrigued by the use of "wizardry" in this book, as it explored an old meaning of the word in ancient Germanic languages referring to criminal acts, which was very fitting for the worldbuilding based off of Roman-era Europe. The best part of the book for me was the ending, a beautiful and powerful sacrifice that doesn't end the way Gilde expects. I really look forward to rereading this book many times in the years to come!

I have had the honor of being on Rachelle’s street team for the release of Embergold! I’m so excited to share this review with you all.
This was a magical story full of hope, love, sacrifice and growth. The plot was interesting, the characters were likable, and it was a fast paced story. Once you start reading you won’t want to stop until you find out what happens! The romance was sweet and I liked watching their relationship grow. This book was heavily inspired by Beauty and the Beast so that was fun! This story may not be for everyone (see content below), but I enjoyed it and I think fantasy/dragon lovers would enjoy it too! Embergold releases on March 18th 2025!

Content : Mentions of wizardry (not portrayed in a good light), killing, death, ghosts, domestic abuse, sickness, severe injuries

Thank you @rachelle.nelson.author and @enclavepublishing for the early copy of this book. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book weaves a beautiful story of self-sacrifice and true love. The biblical parallels in the novel are incredibly well done. Main character Gilde goes through many trials over the course of the novel, developing into a resilient and selfless young woman. I enjoyed every minute of this action-packed, romantic, imaginative tale.

Embergold
By: Rachelle Nelson

•••

Embergold is a masterful weaving of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale and more. It’s not quite a retelling. It definitely had similar elements but is also its own story. Which I love! Just when you think you understand the direction the tale is going, you quickly realize that you were wrong.

When our FMC got into sticky situations I couldn’t even see a way out of, I found myself on the edge of my seat, wondering how in the world the author had found a way to write the next scene.

The world building is so well done, I could picture everything very clearly. It is a beautiful and riveting read.

Gilde is our main character. She has grown up very isolated from the rest of the world and only knows that if she steps foot outside of the marsh she will be found by the dragon that hunts her family. When her father takes her on a journey to find the dragon, events are set in motion that will change her life forever.

Thus begins an epic journey about a dragon and a girl.

This book makes you feel- deeply. The injustice, betrayals, frustration and pain, all of this had me racing to finish the book, looking for that happily-ever-after ending to make sense of all that our heroine had to endure.

A few things that stood out to me:

•Gilde’s love for her father who only wanted to use her. She so clearly loved her father and only wanted to see the good in him for so long, refusing to see his corruption

•Wil’s selflessness throughout the story (don’t want to give any spoilers so will refrain from specific circumstances)

•the love Gilde has for Isa, who is like a sister to her, even though Isa isn’t the most loving in return.

•the sacrificial and selfless love Gilde continuously shows

Read this if you enjoy reading about:

🐉fairytales
🐉dragons
🐉epic adventures
🐉magic
🐉wizards
🐉sacrificial love
🐉dragon hunters

No spice, no language

CW: some talk of abuse, wizardry, talk of human sacrifice for magic, some violence

🤍 Thank you so much @enclavepublishing the arc of Embergold🤍

Oh my gosh I am still thinking about this book! It was my first by @rachelle.nelson.author and I’m obsessed.

A girl betrayed, a secret mountain, and a dragon. With secrets, romance, and action, this book had me hooked.

It was fun and adventurous, while also having dark/emotional undertones that gave it this gritty fairytale vibe I was so here for.

For the reader who loves:
• dragons
• ya fantasy
• standalones
• debts and betrayal

Y’all! This book was fantastic! It was beautiful, emotional, hope-filled, and enchanting! I loved it so much! It pulled me in and held me captive from the first sentence to the last. I was transported into this book, right alongside Gilde! This world came alive!

I liked Gilde right from the start. She’s a very sympathetic character who’s easy to root for. She had a kind soul despite everything she’d been through. I loved watching her grow, experience new things, and overcome fears.

I was so intrigued by the dragon. How could I not be? Especially this one! I don’t want to say too much and spoil anything, but, wow!

This book is going on my favorites shelf. I already want to go back and read it again. It was such a beautiful journey. Yes, there were bumps along the way. Hardships and danger. A lot of soul-searching. But what an inspiring read! I adored it and highly recommend it! It had a very satisfying conclusion, but there’s definitely room for a sequel, which I would love to see.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

All the stars! All the feels! All the joy! My heart is happy and full!

Embergold is a reimagining of my favorite fairytale, Beauty and the Beast. But with dragons—I know, right!

Gilde is a young girl with no mother, raised by a protective but distant father. She’s been sheltered her entire life, hidden away in the marsh.

Because there’s a dragon hunting them.

From this point, the story takes a surprising turn and once said dragon appears I’m head over heels in love with this story!

I loved the imagination of the story and the magical wonder when Gilde’s life changes. My heart raced throughout the story, wondering what would happen next.

I savored every page and raced through the action to see how everyone does. And my heart was broken as I drew near the end, but it was so exquisitely written that I didn’t mind at all!

I received an advance copy from the publisher and am under no obligation to. Highly, highly recommended!

If you take a handful of Beauty and the Beast and mix it with a scoop of How to Train Your Dragon, and throw in a few sparks from something like Rumpelstiltskin, you’ll have an idea of why I enjoyed Embergold by Rachelle Nelson so much. (Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite fairytale, and I love HTTYD.)

For those of you who like dragons, or enchanted castles, or girls with gumption going on adventures, or a little bit of romance, or all of the above, Embergold is the perfect book, whether you’re a young teen, a mature teen, or an adult. Embergold doesn’t avoid reality but stays squeaky clean with content and language, making me confident to recommend the story to readers as young as tweens. (I would love to read this story with my kiddos someday, especially if I have girls.)

I was intrigued by the premise, in the beginning, and through the entire story. There were so many questions asked that I wanted to see answered, so many layers and complexities to the characters, events, and customs that I wanted to explore. The cliffhanger chapter endings kept me up well past my bedtime to solve the latest problem or get past the next danger. I don’t think I breathed at all during the climax. And the ending—not what I expected, but fitting and sweet.

(I really want to know if there’s going to be a Book 2. There easily could be, and I would pick up a sequel in the beat of a dragon’s wing.)

One of the elements (ha) I found most fascinating about this story was its magic system. Embergold portrays magic as I believe it should be: a pure and given side that does good and brings joy, and a dark and manipulated side that costs blood and lives and is used for evil things. This magic felt less elvish and ethereal like The Lord of the Rings and more archaic and, in a way, honest like the old-fashioned fairytales.

I also appreciated the real, relevant themes. Embergold tells a powerful story of change and growth, of hope and healing, of learning to trust, love, and be loved. In simple but sturdy prose—much like Gilde herself—that carries the story well, Embergold shows off the perfect kiss between the light feel of a fairytale and the deep echoes of Something More. You’ll see what I mean when you get there. ;)

To recap: if you’re curious about a Beast who’s essentially Toothless (cute ears and all), a Belle who can’t read, a castle that hides lethal secrets instead of talking furniture, and secrets of fire and water and gold and power, Embergold is the book for you. This story holds so much beauty, endearing humor, and deep truth, and I’m thrilled to recommend it.

I really hope there’s a Book 2 someday. Soon. Maybe.

P.S. If I ever answer a question with the obvious explanation, “I’m a dragon,” you’ll know where it came from.

P.P.S. I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I read the ARC and promptly pre-ordered my own hardcopy.

Beauty and the Beast meets How to Train Your Dragon, is such a great description for this book.
An isolated girl grows up in an abusive home, but because she's never had anything to compare it to, she doesn't realize it. When her father trades her life for peace from a dragon, she buries her hurt and disregards the betrayal until it threatens to hurt what she has come to care for...
Dragons are bad. Everyone knows that. When she was little she was hunted by one, so being dragged to a crumbling castle by one is her worst nightmare. Worse than being betrayed by her father.
Little by little the beauty learns that the beast isn't what he seems.

This book was amazing! I keep saying that. I told myself I was going to come up with better descriptors when I started to write a review for this book.
The story starts a little slow, but each nugget of information is important to the whole story. The relationships that Gilde has with each person in her life (and that number is few) is important to her make up. Yes, she makes some silly decisions in the beginning, but it makes sense! She grows throughout the story. Once the action starts, it doesn't stop until the end of the book. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat!
I highly recommend this beautiful book. the author weaves biblical truths in a way that is not cheesy or overdone. The fantasy feels very much like a fairytale, and I felt for the characters at each twist and turn. The romance was beautiful, and I absolutely love Wil! Forget trendy Morally Grey character...how about a Sam-like character from LOTR, instead?

First, can we talk about the cover of this book? Isn't it incredible?! There's just so much to say about this story, I don't even know where to start. But, like Julie Andrews said, "Let's start at the very beginning."

We meet sweet Gilde as a little girl. You can feel not only her innocence, but her strong desire to please her father. A father who leaves much to be desired. We also meet Isa, who is the closest thing to a sister Gilde has, but Isa is young & married to Guntor, who like Gilde's father, isn't a pleasant sort. Gilde's isolation from the world truly shapes her!

As this is a Beauty and the Beast type story, you can well imagine that the "beast" is a dragon. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author wrote this characters and all of the mystery surrounding him and the castle. Goodness, there's so much I want to say about how Gilde comes to know the dragon. For a review, that would all fall under the "spoiler" idea, and the story needs to unfold piece by piece for you! Of course, books are involved throughout the story and I loved that! Gilde's time with the dragon covers a good portion of the book. SO much happens during their time together. Gilde finally has a chance to spread her wings away from her father's control and isolation... although she IS in a castle alone with a dragon. She's able to ask questions, learn more about herself, and to a degree, learn more about the world. That is, until she has to leave the castle and everything goes haywire!

We learn about Embergold, Gilde's father's desired use for it, and its connection to the dragon. *insert a grimace here! There's so much each reader can take away from this story. I did appreciate that the author was sure to weave in the fact that God exists and Gilde struggles to understand how He can exist with all that happens not only to her, but those around her. With some of the care Gilde receives from a couple the dragon introduces her to, there's a bit of family being the people you choose.

There's adventure from beginning to end. Sweet & tender moments (Remember the 1995 dance scene Casper with Kat & Casper? That's what I'm talking about), moments when your heart will break, and the thrill of triumph!

I have to say... I would LOVE a second book because I need some answers! lol I need more of the story!!

*I received the ARC ebook for review. This is my personal opinion.

Embergold by Rachelle Nelson was a fantastic book that just about anyone could find something that they enjoy. This book was a bit of a new twist on the classic fairy tales that depict dragons, magic and damsels being sacrificed to the dragons. I had a great time reading this book all the way through. I enjoy reading a lot of series, but I enjoyed reading this one as a standalone too. It is hard to find many standalone books today that hold their own, but this one does.
Gilde, the main female character, is told by her father that her mother died, and it is because of the dragon, which has no other name, but “the dragon.” Her father tells her they must live in the marsh areas, away from populated places and mor civilized living, because if the dragon comes again, the water will drown it. Gilde seems to have a faint heart and at times it is hard for her to just breathe. She has noticed things about her father and his dealings over the years, but she just sums them up as nothing too significant.
One day her father tells her they are leaving the home that she has always known to go on a journey. He does not disclose to her where they are going or what they will do when they get there or along the way. During their travels Gilde starts to learn things about her family and her father. Unfortunately, before she can ask questions or have time to find out what is going on, she is sacrificed to the dragon as a price that her father owed.
Gilde begins to find out that what she was told all her life may not be the truth at all. The dragon does seem fearsome, but there are other things about the dragon to make it seem that it is not just a monster. Will this be the end for Gilde or may she find many things that have been missing in her life?
I was kept captive by this fantastical story. It was a delight to read about all the dragons and mysterious activity surrounding them and other events. The vivid scenes will keep you invested throughout the entirety of the book. I recommend that you pick this one up as soon as you can and do not put it on your to-read list but read it immediately.
I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.

𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝!! I’ve had my eye on this book since the day it came up on my feed months ago. The stunning cover really captured my attention, plus the fact that it was YA fantasy. So I stalked my library app for the release of the audio. Once I started I could not put it down and when I had to I was dying to get right back to it. After just few chapters I knew that this would become an instant all time favorite. It was so good I had to buy the ebook just so I could read along while I listened.

Embergold is a fascinating and enchanting young adult fantasy that is fresh and exciting, but also feels like a nostalgic classic. There is a very specific fairy tale that gives the same vibes but I will not ruin any of the book by telling it here. I did go into this one blind and I feel like that is the way to go.

Marketed as Young Adult, Embergold does have darker themes that may not be suitable for the younger audience, but those are countered with beautiful allegory of trusting in a savior and laying your burdens down.

This story is captivating from the first page to the last. The reader will be swept away on the wings of a dragon to a high mountain where a deep bond is formed between two hearts whose freedom has been sacrificed for the gain of others.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves stories of friendship, sacrificial love, magical dragons, or fairytales that immerse you in a world where darkness hovers but light always overcomes. If you can you need to do the audiobook. A great narration!

Now I need to go watch Desolation of Smaug, Stardust, or Legend.

Rachelle Nelson displays her talent for writing wonderful fantasy stories. I really enjoyed reading Embergold. If you like Beauty and the Beast, then you will love Embergold. In the beginning I felt so bad for Gilde and the life she had with her father, Isa, and Guntor. Then all seemed truly lost when she ends up trapped in a castle with the dragon she had been taught to fear all her life.

As the story unfolds, we learn that all was not as it seemed to be with Gilde and her father. Her difficult upbringing has taught her people cannot be trusted. In fact, we see a recurring theme for her, Wil, and Isa - that the people who should have loved, protected and cared for them, only deceived, abused and abandoned them. During her time in the castle, we see Gilde learn to be brave, stand up for herself, and begin to learn the truth about her situation. I loved that as her friendship with Wil grows, we see both of them grow, being willing to hope, and risking trust, love, and self-sacrifice. One of the quotes I loved was from Gilde:

“This was my choice. I was chained, but more free than I had ever been. Love couldn’t be demanded or coerced, only given. This was the right kind of sacrifice.”

There were some wonderful plot twists which kept me reading to see what would happen next. The author did a wonderful job telling this story and showing the power of love - and even how bad things can be used for good. I received an early copy for review and the opinions expressed are my own.

Wow this book was so amazing! Nelson has crafted a fantasy story with spectacular characters and an engaging plot with Beauty and the Beast vibes. There are some crazy twists and turns that kept me so invested in the story. I didn’t want to stop reading.

There is great world building and the magic was well done. I appreciate when magic isn’t over the top and confusing.

Gilde is such a fantastic character. Her growth was astonishing in the story, as she makes her way through perilous circumstances that has her questioning what she’s been told and what she has believed her whole life. I can’t give many more details, but when she is taken by the dragon, Gilde’s world turns upside down. Wil stole the show for me. He is mysterious and wise, with a tragic backstory, and an instant favorite.

This book is a journey full of many remarkable characters. I can’t name too many names but I loved where the story takes Gilde and Wil. Isa was a surprising favorite and Petra. I loved the times when they were together and what Will taught Gilde and of course, what becomes of Wil. The whole book is full of dazzling surprises. I highlighted so many phrases. Nelson’s words leapt off the page and were so memorable.

Aimee Lilly does an amazing job with the narration. During the tense and climatic moments, I could feel her urgency. The variation of voices was well done, as well as the accents.

I’m hoping for another story in this world!

I received an eARC from the publisher and for tour purposes. I borrowed the audio from Libby. All views are my own.

Gilde only knows the wet, sticky life of the marsh and the cold shoulders of her small family. Once, she saw the great dragon gliding over her head in search of her father. Then she knew why they had to hide in the wetlands. Because dragons hate water, and this marsh is the only place they can be safe.
One day, her father declares they are going to meet with the dragon at his castle and trade something for their freedom. Little does Glide know it's her he’s trading and the dragon will surprise her in more ways than one.
This Beauty and the Beast style twist on a dragon tale with leave you guessing and begging for more. I enjoyed Rachel's elegant and soulful storytelling. She made me fall deeply in love with the characters and their journey through fire, water, and chains. I thoroughly enjoyed the Sky of Seven Colors, and this book is as similar to it as it is different! We have creatures we think we should fear who protect us and beautiful people we think we can trust who are pulling the strings.
I also enjoyed the nod to an Aslan character and the graceful weaving of this slow-burn love story as well the fight for personal redemption.

I love fairy tale retellings, so I adored the Beauty and the Beast motifs woven throughout Embergold. While the book pulls some of its inspiration from the tale, Embergold is still its own story and holds a few surprises in store. Nelson's writing style fits perfectly with the tone of a classic or fairy tale, which only enhances the reading experience.

Gilde and the dragon are great characters. While Gilde's innocence/native could have come off as grating and annoying, I thought that Nelson handled it well and realistically. Yes, there were moments when I disagreed with Gilde's choices, but I understood why the character was making them and they fit with her backstory.

Because of some of its themes, I would recommend Embergold to older YA readers, simply because they're heavier subject matter. Nelson does handle them carefully and appropriately though.

Overall, Embergold is an enchanting book, a new fairy tale with a classic feeling that readers will love.

Cautions: gaslighting; mentions of verbal and physical abuse, non-descriptive; allusions that a character was involved in unsavory things as a child; two mentions of characters being born outside of marriage; light/moderate romance; two kisses; non-graphic violence; dark magic*

*magic isn't a caution I normally mention, but I did want to in this case. There are two types of magic in Nelson's storyworld, one of which is good and "natural." The other is dark magic that requires hurting or killing other people. It's always portrayed in a negative light and as evil, but I did want to mention it since it might be unsettling for some readers.

George MacDonald’s The Lost Princess ends with this quote, “If you think it is not finished—I never knew a story that was. I could tell you a great deal more concerning them all, but I have already told more than is good for those who read but with their foreheads, and enough for those whom it has made look a little solemn, and sigh as they close the book.”, and I have rarely encountered a story that makes me do just this, but Embergold is among their number.

The story is unhurried, unfolding naturally and beautifully, more concerned with the present moment than the ending to come. The world Nelson has created invites you in, painting a vivid backdrop you seem to be gradually enveloped by as you move from one page to the next, until you’re fully ensconced in the world.

Gilde is an enchanting heroine, her naiteve, loyalty, and wide-eyed wonder combing to create an enchanting character you simultaneously want to be friends with and step into the story to protect. Her growth is natural, a slow blossoming from a scared girl to a young woman of wisdom and grit.

I will be thinking about this story for a long time, the nuggets of wisdom and truth it contains, and the challenge it issues to choose love in the face of betrayal when our world encourages us to seek revenge. The depth of this story is such that my attempts to talk about it seem inadequate, and all I can say is you need to read it for yourself.

To me, reading Embergold felt a lot like riding a dragon - mysterious, whimsical, and thrilling, with more twists and flips than I can count. But it wasn't all surface-level pandering to dragon lovers! Embergold includes many deep themes and heartfelt moments that bring an unexpected depth to the narrative and the characters. The unique dragon lore and wizard/alchemist lore was both intriguing and sinister, keeping me turning the pages. I'm typically not big on romance, but the dynamics of this story had me heavily invested and rooting for it to the very end. What's more, a story that explores the darkest parts of human nature, only to shine a light so bright that I walk away with more faith in humanity's potential for good than ever before - those are the stories I enjoy the most.

Embergold may not be for the faint of heart, but after reading it, maybe your heart won't be so faint after all...

"I had once thought a good god had to be on my side of things. But none of my plans would have been this good. After (everything that happened), if there really was a god like that, I was starting to think I ought to be on his side. ... Why had I never called on him for help?"

Well done, Rachelle!

Embergold is a fantastical tale about belonging, hope and trust. For readers who loved Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyer and East by Edith Pattou, this story will whisk you away on an adventure with magic, dragons, the mountains, a castle, treasure, and the ocean. Rachelle has created a fairy tale world in which the characters are fierce in their search for truth, working to trust one another to save those they love.

The complex characters evoke compassion from the reader, and really shed a light on our human nature. The way each character was shown as being more than one thing, and how understanding a person can help you to care deeply for them in spite of things they have or have not done. Gilde and the Dragon are my two new favourite characters!

Once I started this story I couldn’t put it down! If you love fairy tale stories with magic, adventure, good vs evil, dragons, hope, courageous characters, found family, and belonging, Embergold is an enchanted story you don’t want to miss!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Rachelle Nelson and Enclave Publishing. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

This was an awesome book with lots of intrigue. I mean a talking dragon reminded me of the movie DragonHeart from the 90s and I was SOLD! The romance was sweet and love how it added to the plot. I also admire the Jesus drops within the book with descriptions or word hints; it was brief and only a Christian would pick up on but it was beautifully intertwined in the book.
It paced really well and while some parts were a smidge slow to me (I wish there was more action going on) the book itself was pretty interesting. The only issue I had was why Gilde caught herself on fire later in the book? Was she trying to turn into a dragon? Suicide? Distraction? I couldn’t grasp that so maybe I missed something there but it threw me off.
Regardless, I’d recommend this book and kind of hope there’s a spin off for it since it is a standalone but the ending could bring about a second book!
