Cursed Princess Club #1

Cursed Princess Club, vol. 1

Rate this book
Meet Gwendolyn – living proof that princesses don’t always have it all. See, although she lives in a castle and her father is the King, Gwendolyn isn’t like a movie princess, or even a fairly-tale princess. She’s got a big heart, but isn’t particularly attractive and doesn’t have a Disney-quality singing voice. But one night, she accidentally stumbles upon the twisted world of the Cursed Princess Club, and her life will never be the same. Hexed and cast out, the ladies of the club are just the people Gwendolyn needs to show her that just because she doesn’t “fit the mold” does not mean she’s any less of a princess.

In a Nutshell: A well-crafted storyline combined with attractive graphics. The title doesn’t indicate how intricate and intelligent the storyline is, so my reading experience went much beyond my expectations. Great for all graphic novel lovers. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Teenaged princesses Maria (18), Lorena (17), and Gwendolyn (16), live with their brother Jamie (also 16) and their overprotective father, the King of Pastel Kingdom. Maria and Lorena are everything you would expect from typical Disney princesses, but Gwendolyn is not so blessed physically. When she overhears her potential fiancé calling her ugly, Gwen runs into the forest, only to stumble into some members of the ‘Cursed Princess Club’. And luckily for Gwen, these are exactly the people Gwen needs to tell her that life is more than looks.
NOTE: I'm reading this book on the WEBTOON app, but as Goodreads doesn't have that option, I'll be updating my progress against the graphic novel entries. This first volume is based on season 1 (episodes 1-29) of the webcomic.
Many of you might glance at that title and the cover, and dismiss this as a flippant princess story for youngsters. I confess, I was also in the same boat. The only reason I grabbed this was that my daughter insisted on my reading it. Boy oh boy, was I wrong in my assumption! ‘Never judge a book by the cover’ is almost always true, but especially so in this case.
The story starts in the usual ‘princess story’ way that made me wonder why I was compelled to pick this up so urgently. But once Gwendolyn stumbles her way into the Cursed Princess Club, the plot development amps up to a masterful level.
Here are some themes/topics you will find in this first volume of the graphic novel series:
💎 A family story that sounds typical but isn’t so.
💎 Excellent character development, with just enough information to let us know their personality but not too much of an infodump to make them predictable.
💎 An intricate storyline that goes far beyond what is initially apparent, and even contains several twists and turns.
💎 Gender discrimination against males as well as females.
💎 Judgement based on looks, objectification based on social stereotypes about physical characteristics, and the value of inner beauty and kindness.
💎 Inclusive representation.
💎 Royalty, princesses, princes and related paraphernalia.
💎 Magic and curses and fantastical characters.
💎 Humour that goes much beyond the corny jokes you typically see in teenage comics.
💎 Easter eggs about Disney tales and pop culture references.
💎 An overpampered llama. (Yeah okay, this point isn’t as important as the others, but it is still hilarious!)
The writing is perfect for the Gen-Z crowd, and even incorporates a lot of their lingo, in which, thanks to my daughters, I am a pseudo-expert! 😄
I was struggling to describe the art style, which I loved but couldn’t define accurately, as I am quite deficient in the technical knowledge of manga and all things related. So here you have a comment on the artwork straight from the horse’s mouth… errrr… I mean, in my daughter’s words:
“The art style in the initial stages of the comic is reminiscent of typical shoujo-manga art, but over the course of the webtoon, Lambcat's illustrations noticeably develop into her own style. The "pretty" ones of the pastel kingdom's princesses are modelled on anime girls deliberately to show how cutesy and stereotypically beautiful they are.”
Convincing, right?
I am not a WEBTOON reader, partly because of the lack of time rather than a lack of interest, and partly because I have always seen it as something ONLY for teenagers. But my elder daughter is a huge WEBTOON fan, and devours these comics with gusto. While I am all for reading fluffy books for sheer entertainment purposes, I am thrilled that webcomics can be as intelligent and impactful as this one. (I shouldn’t have doubted her taste anyway. But let’s not tell her that!)
In the meantime, definitely recommending this to every reader who loves graphic novels and meaningful stories with a light touch.
4.5 stars, happy to round up because it is perfect for the target age group.
My thanks to the WEBTOON app for this free access to the story!
Rushing to the second volume right away! There is one important reason for the hurry. Apparently, there’s something called a ‘daily pass’ in the WEBTOON app which allows us to read a graphic book at the rate of only one episode per day. And this popular webcomic is turning into a ‘daily pass access’ from the 25th of April. I now have the mammoth task of reading 173 episodes + bonus content by the 24th! Wish me luck!
Ya'll....
I ate this book up and LOVED every single page. This was such an amazing reading experience that centered being yourself and loving yourself when you don't meet societal expectations. I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did, but I'm so glad that I made the decision to pick this one up! It did not disappoint. With beautiful storytelling and artwork, this is one that I HIGHLY recommend.
So, rereading my favorite webtoon before the latest season is released ^-^
This webtoon is so close to my heart! Princess or not, I can relate to Gwen, cause I too don't fall in the category of beautiful women set by the society. People in our country think that only the girls who have fair complexion and straight hair are beautiful. As I don't have any of those, I had to endure much, like Gwen did. But she was lucky to have the cursed princess club by her side, who taught her that beauty comes from within, with a touch of humor.
The humor of this webcomic is too good! Loved every episode of it. It's so amazing!! The thought behind it and the execution of it is MARVELLOUS!
Recommended for everyone, if you too face troubles like Gwen or not, especially for those, who judge people by their looks. Cause you don't know how much you can hurt a person just by your words.
This is such a cute series! Easily my favorite webcomic yet. The characters are all super lovable and amazing, Princess Gwen is such a cinnamon roll and a cutie pie. I love how supportive and loving her entire family is (Jamie is Sooo pretty ! like wtf). The comedy is spot on and makes me laugh out loud every episode. I love how cute the art and the coloring is!
The Cursed Princesses (& Saffron lol) are all amazing, and I can't wait to learn more about them.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes a light-hearted slice-of-life comedy, that subverts typical fairy tale tropes about princesses.
This is an ongoing series btw
(Prince Fredrick can go suck it for all I care)
Amando ando 🤩🙈✨🥰
No estaba segura de marcar los webcomic acá o no. Pero lo voy a hacer porque no puedo dejar de recomedarlo 🙈🙈
El club de las princesas hechizadas temporada 1 (episodios 1 al 29)
Amé!! Es una historia muy atrapante y linda. Hay hermosas reflexiones y escenas muy divertidas que me hicieron sonreír. Amo que todos los personajes sean distintos y que nadie desee el mal a nadie y aún así hayan conflictos re interesantes. 🥰
Las princesas del reino pastel están por casarse con los príncipes del reino cuadrillé y están súper emocionadas y entusiasmadas 😱 ellas tienen cada una sus cualidades y siempre se ayudaron entre si. Pero para Gwen todo se vuelve gris cuándo escucha a uno de los príncipes decir que ella no es tan linda como sus hermanas, por suerte encontrará al club de las princesas hechizadas quienes le ayudarán a amarse a si mismo.
ES TODO TAN ADORABLE 🥰🙈✨🥺
Y se Lee de una sentada! Busquenlo en webtoon!!
Yo leyendo el club de las princesas hechizadas: ✨🙈🥰😱🥺😅
It breaks many stereotypes without being preachy.
I love all the cursed princesses <3
The art style is adorable. Also the background music is apt and it amplifies the experience of reading it.
Everyone needs to read it!
I was disarmed by how clever and outright funny everything about this graphic novel was. It’s insanely fun to read and yet if I try to explain the core of the story it’s about the evils of imperialism, the idea of beauty being a construct but also how much it really affects how you feel about yourself, really lovely sibling relationships and the best found family vibes, and ALSO almost every character is on a journey towards self discovery. It’s so much and it’s all just 🤌 perfection.
The depth in the storytelling is only outdone by the hilarity of the storytelling. I have cried I’ve laughed so hard at parts. Also, if you read this online (which you should it’s literally free) the author has also composed their own soundtrack that plays while you read and altogether it’s just so impressive.
Woah.
I decided to read this book because Yin Yin did it for Book Talk last year in 6th Grade, and I really enjoyed it! The art is beautiful and the story is amazing as well. I can relate to the main character (Gwen/Gwendolyn) in a few ways (ex. the feeling of not belonging sometimes) and she's a very interesting character. The fact that she's not cursed (or at least she thinks she's not) but is different from the rest of her sisters makes her unique.
(This is a continuing webtoon :>)
Got about halfway through this. The art's pretty nice, but nothing else about it was working for me, from the over-simplified settings and messaging, to the characters, to the humor*. It seems to be about time for me to check out Webtoon titles online myself rather than relying on others' reviews.
* the llama was the last straw that made me close the book for good.
I laughed SO HARD while I was reading this book, especially at the beginning when we are first meeting all of the characters. I loved this book, it was so DELIGHTFUL. The art was pretty, the characters were dimensional and poked fun at tropes one would typically find in fairy tales and you could practically FEEL the love the family members and friends had for one another.
Let me dig a little deeper into that, especially the love the father, sisters and brother had for the youngest sister. They were ALL gorgeous physically, except for the youngest sister, BUT they ALL had kind and loving hearts and natures, INCLUDING the "ugly" one. They all ONLY saw her as lovely, because she WAS lovely. She was loving and kind and I wanted to SMACK the youngest Prince Plaid for not trying to get to actually KNOW her instead of just going off of what she looked like to him.
But he was only 16 or so and honestly? Books (and humans) are judged by their covers, rightly or wrongly, all of the time, and by people older then their teen years.
I love how the Princesses (and Prince! Lol) from the club rallied around Gwen (and how her sisters and brother did too, SO SWEET!!!) and invited her into their group and that slumber party was SO CUUUUUTE!! (My fav part was the pillow fight when the Prince's Goblin Hand gave an assist and his reaction to it. I was practically in tears.)
Now, the humor might be a tad on the older side, so I would say this would be good for older middle readers on up, though parental figures might want to screen it first before handing it to a middle reader, as you know their reading level better than I, a random reviewer on the interwebs.
I am going to own this in as many formats as I can. Take all my money, please and thank you. Definitely an order for my store and one I will be hand selling. Now, WHEN is the next volume coming out?!?
5, I am SO GLAD this was my first read of 2023 what a great way to start off the reading year, stars!
My thanks to NetGalley and Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group, WEBTOON Unscrolled for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
Eu decido ler comics pela arte, depois leio a sinopse e logo vejo se leio ou não...sim, a arte é o que me vende a história neste estilo de livro (acho que faz todo o sentido 🤭).
Esta história tem tanto de fofa e adorável, como tem de dor e sofrimento. As temáticas abordadas são extremamente importantes, são humanas...infelizmente são reais e mais presentes na sociedade do que seria de esperar.
É difícil sermos nós próprios, quando o mundo nos diz que não somos suficientes, não somos bonitos, não somos importantes - mas a verdade é que somos! Somos importantes para nós e para quem gosta verdadeiramente de nós. Somos bonitos aos nossos olhos e aos olhos de quem nos ama. Somos importantes para nós e para aqueles que nos amam.
Encontrar o nosso lugar no mundo, encontrar as nossas pessoas, é difícil e por vezes demora...mas eventualmente elas aparecem e relembram-nos de que não estamos sós. Ninguém está só ❤️
É uma história linda que promete tornar-se ainda mais espectacular 🥰 mal posso esperar pelos próximos volumes.
I have never loved a graphic novel more!
5 stars! (Review for season 1)
This is the story of Gwendolyn/Gwen of the Pastel Kingdom. One day, her father, the King, brings news of a matrimonial alliance between his three daughters Maria, Lorena and Gwen and the princes of Plaid Kingdom. Then some events occur that lead Gwen to the Cursed Princess Club where each princess (or prince) is living with a curse and come together to support each other.
I loved several aspects of the graphic novel.
♡ The love and care the Pastel siblings have for each other is touching.
♡ Gwen is not a traditional looking princess, per se. But she is never made to feel like she's less than by her family. Looks simply don't factor in, like in a true family.
♡ I found several social media trends, which were fun. For eg- Go to a different Kingdom, they said. It would be fun, they said.
♡ The princesses of the Cursed Princess Club seem extremely fun. Looking forward to getting to know them more.
♡ It brought a nice twist to the tale of Sleeping Beauty. We don't always need a prince (or a princess) to wake us up.
♡ I absolutely abhor the king of Plaid Kingdom. I would definitely appreciate him receiving a nice lesson in the next installment. He's a horrible parent and person.
♡ Gwen messing up some rehearsed lines hilariously (NOT clarifying more).
♡ Love the lesson it is teaching.
I highly highly recommend!
A special thanks to Rosh for recommending this!
Edit: I’ve been reading into the next volume and it’s taking over my world. I’m so in love. So this is five stars now.
Wow! Not sure if this is a 4 or a 4.5, but I LOVE these characters and I am so looking forward to reading more! The world here is so much fun, and I just know everything is going to get better as it moves along. This is definitely one of my favourite graphic novels
Everyone knows that all princesses are beautiful and all princes are heroic and strong, right? Or at least that some always get cursed. Well, that last part's right in Cursed Princess Club, a delightfully fractured fairy tale of a story where Princess Gwendolyn of the Pastel Kingdom has the most beautiful soul of her three sisters but not the outside to match it. Prince Fredrick of the Plaid Kingdom is anything but excited to have been forced into a political engagement with her while his brothers get her older, more traditionally pretty sisters, but as we learn in the short story from his perspective that ends the book, he comes by his issues fairly honestly as the prince who defies known "truths" about princes. Meanwhile Gwen wanders into the forest and meets the ladies (and gent) of the Cursed Princess Club, who have banded together to support each other in their terrible, unbreakable curses, from Princess Thermadora, a lobster princess cursed to be human, to Princess Abbi, who made Urashima Taro's mistake. It's not consistent, but when it's on, it's on, and by the end it's hard not to be invested in Gwen and Frederick's slowly changing relationship. (Or the Cursed Princesses. They're a blast.) If you're into fractured fairy tales, this is definitely one to check out.
Weird, like some parts more than others. Cooky, often times sweet, but I can't stand any of these parents. Gwen is a dear trapped in a comedy of errors Milo Murphy's Law horror edition at trying to get to know her fiance. One king is an over protective helicopter parent who has left his children I'll equipped for the world. One king only values an unhealthy version of machismo and is abusive towards his children. Frederick can be a bit of a jerk at times but can also be sweet and needs to learn to work on himself. His brothers are shallow so far. They don't have much going for them besides looks. I wish we'd gotten more of the Cursed Princess Club members in this volume. I love the teacher from the Pastel Kingdom. Besides the Butler and the Cursed Princess Club she's one of the few characters in this series with any sense. Intrigued, like the art. It sort of reminds me of the art style in Princess Tutu but with a Miyazaki color palette. Will read book 2 when I find it.
Antes de mais, agradecer à editora por me ter disponibilizado, tão prontamente, um exemplar para leitura e opinião.
🌺Este deve ter sido o livro/novela gráfica que mais gosto me deu ler o ano passado. Estava à espera de gostar bastante pois adoro este tipo de livros com banda desenhada colorida, mas acabei por gostar mais do que estava à espera.
🌸Num mundo em que se espera que as princesas sejam todas lindas, educadas e elegantes e prontas a casar com quem quer que os pais escolham, temos estas três irmãs maravilhosas que representam as imperfeições que toda a gente tem. São espontâneas, barulhentas, estranhas e absolutamente fora dos parâmetros sociais da nobreza.
Apesar de ser uma história em banda desenhada com momentos hilariantes, esta história mostra como as pessoas podem ser crueis com quem é diferente. Gwnendolyn é mesmo a prova de que nem todas as princesas têm um aspecto fofo e adorável. Apesar disso, é amada e respeitada tanto pelas irmãs, como pelo irmão, pai e pelos príncipes que estão destinados às irmãs.
🌸No meu entender, à maneira dela, Gwendolyn é magnífica. Tem um coração enorme e uma bondade interminável. Adora a família, e, até os animais mais estranhos a adoram a ela. Ela é a imagem de alguém que todos os dias tem de aceitar que não tem uma beleza estonteante, que é a mais estranha dos filhos do rei e que, de repente, se vê integrada num grupo de pessoas como ela. Com defeitos e virtudes tal qual como são. Um grupo de pessoas que a aceita e faz questão que ela faça parte do seu dia a dia e das suas actividades.
🌸Adorei as três irmãs, mas a Gwendolyn conquistou-me sem reservas e o Jamie também, o irmão com cara de menina, dono de uma ternura imensa e de um dom muito especial.
🌸Quero muito, muito que saia depressa o segundo volume desta série e ver como se vão portar as nossas princesas e os nossos princípes maravilhosos!
😍Como não podia deixar de ser, a criança que há em mim, apesar da minha idade, adorou este livro e estas personagens coloridas e divertidas!
Recomendo, claramente!
This was a pretty cute little comic! I found it enjoyable generally, and very easy and quick to read.
I really like the idea of people who curses and/or misfits having a little club, and I am in love with what the support looks like in there. It's really great to show some good ways to be supportive of people. The art style is also adorable.
As much as I enjoyed this, it suffers from the same ailment I find a lot of webtoons suffer from, which is taking too long to get anywhere. The beginning of this is basically just about her being ugly, straight up, which kind of sits weird with me, but ce la vie. But it took a while to get even an inclination that she may also be cursed. Now, I don't think it's inherently bad, and it works for episodic type comics, but when it's back to back to back it seems drawn out.
I wish the characters had a bit more personality, they all are pretty 2-d, and it made me care less about a lot of the characters, which is a shame.
I think this has a lot of potential, and I am going to keep reading it, and I hope it grows to be more fleshed out.
This book follows the adventures of Gwnedolyn, the Pastel Kingdom's youngest and sweetest princess but is treated unfairly due to her lack of stereotypical princess beauty.
I was not expecting to laugh out loud as much as I did while I read this book. It's amazingly funny. It is silly but that's what makes it work. There's a deep message here and instead of being beaten over the head with it, we get to enjoy it with a good dose of comedy. Everything is fairly well balanced, all the sweetness, silliness, depth and humour are perfectly proportioned with one another.
This was a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read. I'm excited for volume 2! Also I cannot get enough of Prince Saffron and his cursed hand.
I'm reading this as a friend recommended it (she was desperate for me and another friend to read it so she could talk about how great it is). She's right. It's amazing. I love it. Reading it on webtoons means you get a soundtrack with it and it's just THE BEST. Characters you like, who support and like each other, with some genuine laugh-out-loud comedic moments and genuinely moving moments too! It's my new favourite thing! As my friend and I were discussing, it breaks expectations without making it a thing. Cannot recommend enough.
Recuerdo que este ha sido uno de los primeros webtoons que leí durante la pandemia y mano, era un CAGUE DE RISAAAA. Al comienzo todo estaba yendo por un lado cómico y me encantó.
Las Princesas Pastel (EL PRÍNCIPE JAIME TAMBIÉN OBVIO), los Principes Cuadrillé y todo lo que era el mundo me fascinó altoke. El dibujo también ayudó bastante, al ser tan expresivo y dinámico ambientó todo de buena manera y QUEDE ENGANCHADA AAAAAA.
Claro que no todo era jijiji jajaja.
Gwen, nuestra protagonista, que viene siendo una de las princesas Pastel, que se dice que son más hermosas que la chucha, desarrolla una fuerte inseguridad que nunca antes se le habia sido presentada, pero que, dichas las circunstancias con los principes, se ha hecho más presente que nunca al ser llamada "fea"por uno de ellos.
El tema de la fealdad, las imperfecciones y la belleza en este webtoon esta re bien trabajado.
Las princesas, conocidas por ser hermosas, rodeadas por flores y animales y con grandes dotes y virtudes sin imperfección alguna, son amadas por todos. Pero si no es así, serán rechazadas e ignoradas por la sociedad en la que se encuentran, rebajadas a simplemente nada y tachadas de inferiores o inadaptadas. Las imperfecciones en las princesas son representadas por "Hechizos" o "Maldiciones" en la historia, hechizos sin cura o que al curarse no se eliminaron por completo, lo que rompe con la imagen de "Princesa perfecta". Y si bien los hechizos al comienzo son presentados de una manera cómica y amigable, representa un gran reto para las princesas que lo tienen, el aceptarse y aceptarlos para que convivan de la mejor manera posible y demostrarles a todos que pueden ser perfectas con ello también.
I was given an advanced copy of this for review purposes by NetGalley and want to say that this story was absolutely awesome. Gwendolyn is exactly the princess I needed when I was younger, as I too have always felt like a bit of an odd duck. I thought that the art was awesome and I loved the aesthetics of the Pastel Kingdom as well! I will definitely be reading more of this on Webtoon and I'm glad that people will get to see a physical copy of this book!
