I wIf you are thinking about starting this book - please read this review. When I found this book, I saw that it had high reviews and had won awards. I was pulled in with the promise of unique fantasy literature. The idea that a god could die was so interesting. Yet everything I was promised was not what I found. To start, this book is poorly written. The author is clumsy with their words and when describing (literally anything) she would have to do it in a lazy way or in a way that makes your skin crawl. The world she created seems like it already existed and this story is a diversion from other plotlines. The book focuses on two self-conscious people and their very anxious lust. The characters are supposed to be in their 30s and have had past relationships and yet the way their relationship and inner thoughts are written better fit an immature teenager. The whole relationship was heavy-handed and very uncomfortable. The parts that were supposed to be sexy made me want to light the book on fire I was so uncomfortable. The characters are very desperate. All of the italicized remarks could be taken out. Let the reader discern how the characters are feeling. The author took the worst qualities of Edward Cullen from Twilight and put them in the Paladin. The violent jealousy, the fear of uncontrollable violence if he gets emotional, etc. Sounds more abusive than attractive. And the characteristic of Grace is that she is clumsy and plain looking. Sounds a lot like Bella Swan if you ask me. Except I would argue Twilight was a much better read. I could not get through this book. I cringed through all of the 60% that I read. At one point I just wanted to see if they would have sex since there was so much unnecessary build-up for no payoff. (I hear that they have sex at the end of the book but is very poorly written. If you wanna read about people having sex there are so many other books you could read)
Additionally, there were characters that were so much more interesting like Istvan or Marguerite. Complicated backgrounds and humorous personalities. I would have rather delved into their backstories. There were interesting details in this book like the saint of steel, beserking, decapitation, a poison plot, etc but all that was brief and pushed aside for the narrative to follow two abhorrently annoying people attempt to have sex. Such a waste of time and shattered my expectations. If anyone could recommend a decent fantasy novel I would be very happy as this book did absolutely nothing in the realm of fantasy or even romance. ...more
