Mar. 31, 2:20 p.m. - Pettis announced his top six schools today. The schools that have risen to the top for the defensive back are Duke, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, Rice, and Sam Houston State. The in-state schools have done an outstanding job pursuing Pettis, as well as his teammate D'Various Surratt. Appalachian State was the first to offer Pettis after his freshman year.
Career Timeline
- 2022-23 football season: As a freshman, Pettis was an instant impact player on the Chargers' varsity team. He finished with a whopping 120 total tackles, seven tackles for a loss, two sacks, three quarterback hurries, two itnerceptions, and three pass breakups. Crest finished with a 9-4 overall record and advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs, where the Chargers lost to Big South Conference rival South Point 21-20.
- 2022-23 basketball season: Pettis was on the varsity basketball team as a freshman as well. His role was limited as he averaged 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds. The Chargers finished with a 21-8 overall record and advanced to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs, where they lost to eventual state champion Central Cabarrus.
- 2023-24 football season: The defensive back improved to four interceptions as a sophomore and had four more pass breakups. He made 82 total tackles and two tackles for a loss. Crest finished the season with a 13-1 overall record, losing at home in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs to Dudley by 12 points.
- 2023-24 basketball season: Pettis' basketball role increased dramatically. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.2 steals. Crest finished 20-5 overall, still making the 3A playoffs, but was knocked out by Southern Guilford a round earlier than Surratt's freshman year.
- 2024-25 football season: As a junior, Pettis made 76 total stops, four of which were for a loss. He also had two interceptions, five pass breakups, and a forced fumble. Pettis played some as a receiver in addition to his defensive back role. He had 12 receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown on offense. Crest finished with a 10-3 overall record in Pettis' junior year. The Chargers were knocked out in the third round of the 3A playoffs by Hickory.
- 2024-25 football season: For his performance as a junior, Pettis was named to the 2024 HighSchoolOT All-State Team as an honorable mention.
- 2024-25 football season: For his performance as a junior, Pettis was named to the 2024 HighSchoolOT 704 All-Region Team as a second team selection.
- 2024-25 basketball season: Once again, Pettis took a big step on the basketball court. As a junior, he improved his scoring average to 16.8 points per game. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.6 steals. Crest finished 22-4 after losing on a buzzer-beater to eventual state champion Ben L. Smith in the fourth round.
