CARY, N.C. - The depth in Ashley’s baseball lineup proved too much in a non-conference showdown with Broughton on Saturday afternoon.

The Screaming Eagles used a 10-0 win in six innings to improve to 10-0 overall this season.

The 2 through 7 spots in Ashley’s lineup combined to score all 10 runs. Broughton’s pitching issued 10 walks, and the Capitals’ defense committed five errors in the field.

Will Hartzell turned in five shutout innings for the Screaming Eagles. He struck out three and scattered eight hits. His final two innings of work both ended with the bases being left loaded.

Hartzell helped his own cause in the top of the fourth with a fly ball to center that was lost in the sun allowing two to score.

When Broughton dipped into its bullpen in the fifth, Ashley put up a six-spot to jump ahead 8-0.

Cole Barnes started the fifth-inning offense. With the bases loaded, two scored on a hard ground ball to short.

A wild pitch and hit batsman pushed the score to 6-0, and Cane Mehling’s double down the line in left plated two more.

An error and sacrifice fly helped the Screaming Eagles tack on two more runs in the top of the sixth. Mehling struck out the side in the bottom of the frame to close the door.

Now 10-0, Ashley jumps back into league play on Tuesday at home against Hoggard. The Screaming Eagles are 4-0 in the Mideastern Conference following a pair of two-run wins over Laney and New Hanover this past week.

Broughton is 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Cap-6 Conference. The Capitals will open up a two-game series with Sanderson on Monday afternoon. Sophomore Carson Carroll went 2-for-3 at the plate and struck out five over four innings.

The game took place at Coleman Field on USA Baseball's National Training Complex in Cary, N.C..
