Deadline reported that Brittany Snow has scored the leading role in Hulu's limited series based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast by Mandy Matney. The series currently doesn't have an official title, but Snow will play journalist Mandy Matney, who investigates the murders of the Murdaugh family, a story that gripped the nation in 2021 through the case's trial in 2023. Ghibli's North American film distributor, Gkids, shared the news of this exciting box office win via its official X (formerly Twitter) page. For comparison, the IMAX release of Studio Ghibli's 2023 feature, The Boy and the Heron (titled How Do You Live? in Japan), earned the equivalent of US$1.7 million during its first three days in Japanese theaters -- a record-breaking total at the time. John Krasinski will star in the dark comedic play Angry Alan Off-Broadway this June.

The Penelope Skinner play will mark the first production at the Studio Seaview space, which was previously known as the Tony Kiser Theatre. Seaview, the production company behind John Mulaney’s All In: Comedy About Love, Good Night, and Good Luck with George Clooney this season, acquired the theater from the nonprofit theater company Second Stage Theater in January.

Sam Gold, who directed An Enemy of the People and Romeo + Juliet, both produced by Seaview, directs the one-man play. Angry Alan will start performances May 23, ahead of a June 11 opening night. The play is slated for a 10-week engagement.

Angry Alan makes its New York debut after premiering at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and later appearing in London and around the world. Donald Sage Mackay co-created the piece and acted in prior productions. The production description reads: “Roger is divorced,...

John Krasinski will return to the Off Broadway stage this May in Angry Alan, Penelope Skinner’s critically acclaimed dark comedy that premiered at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Directing will be Sam Gold.

The one-man play, which begins a strictly limited engagement on May 23 with an official opening on Wednesday, June 11, will be the inaugural production of Studio Seaview, the Off Broadway venue owned and operated by the Seaview production company. In recent years, Seaview has become one of the premiere producers of New York stage productions, with recent shows including Romeo + Juliet, Stereophonic and the current, record-setting Good Night, And Good Luck starring George Clooney.

Krasinski most recently appeared Off Broadway in the 2016 Public Theater production of Sarah Burgess’ play Dry Powder, starring opposite Claire Danes.

Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s 1997 anime film Princess Mononoke returns to cinemas in a new way later this month. Gkids announced plans to screen the new 4K restoration, which Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui oversaw, exclusively in IMAX in North America. For a moment in the 1990s, adapting a John Grisham novel into a movie was akin to printing money. It all started with "The Firm," a film that had the good fortune of coming along just as its leading man, Tom Cruise, was really hitting his stride that decade thanks to "A Few Good Men." Of course, it helped that the 1993 legal thriller also paired Tommy C with the dream team of director Sydney Pollack, writer Robert Towne, and a killer supporting cast featuring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Wilford Brimley, and the ever-on-point Gene Hackman.

Runaway Jury, one of the best legal thrillers based on a John Grisham novel, has entered Netflix's top 10. The film features an incredible cast, which includes John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, and Rachel Weisz, and was directed by Reacher's Gary Fleder. Runaway Jury currently sits at number seven in the United States and in the Netflix top 10 worldwide.

The movie is about a lawyer named Wendell Rohr (Hoffman), who is up against Rankin Fitch (Hackman), a shady jury consultant who is able to stack juries in the favor of the defense. In a high-stakes trial against a gun manufacturer following a workplace shooting in New Orleans, one juror (Cusack) and his girlfriend (Weisz) appear able to manipulate the jury to deliver the verdict they wish.

Staircase Studios AI, a new maker of films, TV series and video games, is promising to deliver “near-major-studio” levels of quality at budgets under $500,000.

The new company was founded by Pouya Shahbazian, producer of the Divergent franchise. With input from Brett Stuart, Head of AI Filmmaking, Staircase has built a proprietary AI workflow called ForwardMotion, which the company says “revolutionizes the process of studio filmmaking.”

The studio says it will aim to produce more than 30 projects in the next three to four years, with photorealistic results. (Take a look at the first film in the video above and read on to see more film and TV titles on the company’s launch slate.)

“Near-major-studio-quality releases” will be the goal, a press release from Staircase said, at budgets under $500,000.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, Hollywood gathered for another event at the 2025 SAG Awards. The night had a lot of expected, but also some surprise wins, and many wholesome moments.

During one segment, Mariska Hargitay took the stage to take fans, and the celebrities present, on a walk down memory lane. The actress' most famous role was the one of Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order's first spinoff, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Winnie Holzman, who created My So Called Life, and also wrote the script for the stage and film version of Wicked, revealed that she is developing an HBO family drama titled The Applebaum Curse.

Claire Danes is set to star in the series as the lead role, while Winnie will serve as an executive producer and writer.

The Applebaum Curse will star Danes, while Winnie Holzman (Wicked) will write and act as showrunner. Both she and Danes are executive producers on the show, which is in early development. The logline says the show is an "ongoing one-hour drama series about a dysfunctional family with Claire Danes as the lead role."

When recently asked why no one has tried to reboot or remake My So-Called Life, Holzman replied:

"It’s interesting that you’re asking me that. I am writing something that I’m hoping to do with Claire. Claire Danes is set to star in an HBO drama from Mscl creator Winnie Holzman. The project, titled The Applebaum Curse, is in early development at the premium cable outlet. Holzman will write the script and serve as showrunner, with Danes set to star. Both will executive produce.

HBO describes The Applebaum Curse as a drama series about a dysfunctional family, with Danes in the lead role.

My So-Called Life premiered on ABC in September 1994 to widespread critical acclaim; it was Danes’ breakout role, winning her a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination for lead actress in a drama series. Holzman was also Emmy nominated for writing the pilot episode. The show suffered modest ratings, however, airing against NBC’s Must-See TV comedies on Thursday nights, and was canceled after a single season.

Claire Danes will lead one of Netflix’s newest mystery thrillers, The Beast in Me. Filming recently concluded, and the series will be released on Netflix in 2025. Gordon is reteaming with Danes on this project, having previously worked together on Homeland, where Gordon served as co-creator alongside Alex Gansa. Gordon’s other credits include being the showrunner for 24 and, most recently, working on Accused for Fox and Hulu.

NBC celebrated Saturday Night Live on Friday night with over three hours of music history on SNL50: The Homecoming Concert. The special hosted by Emmy winner Jimmy Fallon streamed live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City and is now available to stream on Peacock.

Matthew Rhys is set to star in Widow’s Bay for Apple TV+. The 10-episode series is about a “mysteriously cursed New England island and its superstitious citizens, led by a mayor who refuses to believe their warnings.“

Rhys will play Mayor Tom Loftis, a “no-nonsense single dad forced to deal with his town’s superstitious citizens who believe it’s cursed as he is desperately trying to put the area on the map as the next Nantucket.” In addition to starring in the series, Rhys will also executive produce alongside creator Katie Dippold (Haunted Mansion). The pilot will be directed by Hiro Murai (Atlanta), who will also serve as producer alongside Claudia Shin and Carver Karaszewski.

Apple TV+ is adding another Emmy winner to its talent roster.

Matthew Rhys has signed on to star in and executive produce a series titled Widow’s Bay at the streamer. The former Americans and Perry Mason star will play the mayor of a coastal New England town who refuses to believe his constituents’ warnings that the place is cursed.

Widow’s Bay comes from creator and showrunner Katie Dippold (The Heat, Haunted Mansion) and Apple Studios. Hiro Murai (Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is on board to direct the pilot and executive produce. Apple TV+ gave the show a series order in September 2024.

The news of Rhys’ casting follows that of Amy Adams in another Apple TV+ series, Cape Fear, earlier Tuesday.

Matthew Rhys has signed on for a leading role in the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Widow’s Bay,” Variety has learned.

The show was picked up for 10 episodes at Apple back in September 2024. The official logline states the show is about “a mysteriously cursed New England island and its superstitious citizens, led by a mayor (Rhys) who refuses to believe their warnings.”

This is the latest streaming TV role Rhys has lined up recently. He recently shot the Netflix limited series “The Beast in Me” opposite Claire Danes, while it was reported in November that Rhys will star opposite John Krasinski in the Amazon Prime Video serial killer drama “Silent River.” He also recently wrapped shooting on the BritBox and BBC1 series adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Towards Zero.”
