John Carpenter said he was inspired by the film Death Wish in the sense that New York was a kind of jungle, and wanted to make a science fiction film along these lines.
Arumi's grandfather Masayoshi is dressed as Snake Plissken from the film Escape from New York (1981). In addition, he says "friends call me Snake" which spoofs the phrase "call me Snake" from the film.
