“Red One” star Mary Elizabeth Ellis has joined the cast of Irish wedding comedy “Ditched.”

Based on bestselling novel “Bride Squad Runaway” by Caroline Grace-Cassidy and Lisa C. Carey, the feature film features Ellis as feisty and commitment-phobic sports journalist Lauren who embarks on a road trip through Ireland with two best friends after one of them is left at the altar.

According to a report by Deadline, sources have revealed that Universal Pictures is looking to continue the hugely successful franchise, which centers on the amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne, with the studio now working on bringing back star Matt Damon alongside Berger.

Don’t tread on “Treadstone.” The USA Network thriller series based on the Jason Bourne film franchise has experienced the largest delayed-viewing lift of any TV series this season. According to Nielsen’s Live + Same Day ratings, the 10 episodes of “Treadstone” Season 1, which concluded last month, have averaged a modest 501,000 total viewers. But with 72 hours of (mostly) DVR viewing factored in, that number jumps to a much better 1.337 million, a whopping +167% lift. That is the largest percentage growth among television’s Top 600 primetime series thus far this season, which started on Sept. 23, 2019. We currently have Live + 3 Day data through Jan. 12, 2020. At the box office, 2019 ended much as 2020 began: Studios are in crisis mode as they try to figure out how to get moviegoers into theaters. This is how Universal came to back two disastrous movies like the $95 million “Cats,” Tom Hooper’s movie version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical blockbuster, and the $175 million “Dolittle,” Stephen Gaghan’s adaptation of the children’s book classic “Dr. Dolittle.”

It’s easy to armchair quarterback. What were they thinking? What was it about these two costly projects that propelled them forward? Didn’t the risks seem obvious?

The second season finale of USA Network’s “Purge” TV series will feature one of the stars from the original film franchise.

Ethan Hawke, who starred in 2013’s “The Purge” as James Sandin, will reprise his role for Season 2 finale airing on Dec. 17.

In the original film, Sandin is a security system salesman who tries to protect his family from home invaders during a purge night gone wrong. The character will be featured in the finale’s cold open, which flashes back to one week before the first national purge and the first time Sandin’s high-tech security system is tested.

Florence Pugh first learned she loved stunt work and fight choreography while playing real-life wrestler Paige in this year’s Fighting with My Family. But it’s safe to say that appearing as Yelena Belova, the “little sister” of Scarlett Johansson’s superhero in Black Widow, took things to another level.

“That was the coolest thing about making it,” Pugh says. “The stunts had these two assassins that needed to move amazingly, and needed to fight off each other.”

LuscasFilm is bringing in “Rogue One” writer Tony Gilroy for its upcoming prequel series centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor character.

Gilroy, who worked extensively on the reshoots for the 2016 “Star Wars” film, will write the pilot episode and direct multiple episodes of the series, an individual with knowledge of the series told TheWrap. Stephen Schiff will remain as showrunner.

Along wtih Luna, Alan Tudyk will reprise his “Rogue One” role as Andor’s android sidekick, K-2S0.

This week the cable network will debut “Treadstone,” a spy drama based on the fictional black ops organization from the “Jason Bourne” film series, alongside the Season 2 premiere of “The Purge,” itself based on the Blumhouse horror franchise of the same name. Both film franchises come from sister studio Universal Pictures. Matt Damon is no stranger to being lost on an alien planet. It happened to him in The Martian and Interstellar. And as it turns out, it almost happened to him in what was until very recently the highest-grossing movie of all time: Avatar, which almost had Damon as its lead instead of Sam Worthington as Jake Sully.

Talking about the whole incident during an interview with British GQ, Damon revealed that James Cameron himself had come to him with the part, and offered him ten percent of the film's profits if he were to take the role.

"Jim Cameron offered me Avatar. And when he offered it to me, he goes, 'Now, listen. I don't need anybody. I don't need a name for this, a named actor. If you don't take this, I'm going to find an unknown actor and give it to him, because the movie doesn't really need you.

Universal’s “News of the World,” a historical drama starring Tom Hanks, will hit theaters just in time for awards season on Dec. 25, 2020.

Paul Greengrass is directing the film, reuniting with Hanks for the first time since 2013’s “Captain Phillips.”

“News of the World” is based on the best-selling novel by Paulette Jiles and set in the days following the Civil War. It charts the unlikely friendship between Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, an earlier precursor to today’s newscasters, and the 10-year-old girl he is tasked with bringing to her relatives. As they travel hundreds of miles into the unforgiving wilderness, the two will face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces.

The movie was previously in development at Fox 2000. However, Disney decided to retire the label this year as part of its purchase of the 20th Century Fox film studio, opting to go ahead only with projects that were already in production.

Tom Hanks’ “News of the World” will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2020, Universal Pictures announced Wednesday.

“News of the World” is written and directed by Paul Greengrass, who is reunited with Hanks for the first time since their 2013 Best Picture nominee “Captain Phillips.”

The film follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), who five years after the end of the Civil War moves from town-to-town as a non-fiction storyteller, telling the news of presidents, queens, feuds and catastrophes. However, in Texas, he meets 10-year-old Johanna who was taken by the Kiowa tribe years ago and is now being returned to her aunt. Kidd agrees to deliver the child, and on their journey, they face human and natural challenges.

“Sound of Metal” is a film with a potent, searing hook. It stars Riz Ahmed, who is such a sensational actor (just watch him in “Jason Bourne” or “Nightcrawler” or “The Sisters Brothers”), as Ruben, a punk-metal drummer, heavy on the tattoos and peroxide, who has been thrashing away as part of a caterwauling noise band for so long that he’s losing his hearing. The prospect of slipping into a disability like this one sounds devastating, and in this case there’s an added emotional factor: Ruben did it to himself. I don’t mean to sound like I’m playing blame-the-victim when it comes to rock ‘n’ roll musicians and hearing loss, but since what’s happening to Ruben is happening as a result of choices he made, the drama of his condition amounts to — or should — some sort of reckoning.

Newcomer Helena Zengel has been tapped to star opposite Tom Hanks in Paul Greengrass’ upcoming “News of the World,” sources tell Variety.

“News of the World” is based on the best-selling 2016 novel by Paulette Jiles, which is set in the days following the Civil War. It charts the unlikely friendship between Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), an early precursor to today’s newscasters, and the 10-year-old girl (Zengel) he is tasked with bringing to her relatives.

The historical drama was originally set up at Fox 2000, but following the recent Disney-Fox merger, the film was let go. Universal quickly acquired the rights and fast-tracked the film into pre-production.

Luke Davies penned the first draft of the script, with Greengrass writing a more recent version. Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce the film through Playtone with Gregory Goodman and Gail Mutrux through her Pretty Pictures. Production is expected to start later this year.

Serendipity is in NBC’s future — as in a small-screen adaptation of the 2001 rom-com that starred John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.

Our sister site Variety reports that the Peacock network has given a script commitment to a series inspired by the movie, in which Cusack and Beckinsale played a couple seemingly fated to be together, though they certainly put that notion to the test.

The Boys are back to work – and business is booming. Filming is now underway in Toronto for Season 2 of the Amazon Original series The Boys, the ultra-violent and proudly pervy superhero drama that premiered on Amazon Prime on July 26 and already ranks as the digital platform’s fastest breakout ever and its best-reviewed original series to date.

The show’s fan following has already put The Boys at No 39 on IMDb’s list of television’s all-time best series.

MTV’s “The Challenge: War of the Worlds 2” is set to premiere Aug. 28 with expanded 90-minute episodes. Set in the middle of a jungle, the new season will follow the same format as the first season as 14 British athletes compete against 14 American athletes in hopes of winning their share of the $1 million prize.

USA has released the trailer for its “Bourne” franchise spinoff series, “Treadstone,” and we quickly learn that a legion of “sleeper agents” are waking up to discover that they’ve become superhuman assassins.

Several well-choreographed fight sequences follow, which you can watch in the action-packed 45-second trailer above.

A TV spinoff of Universal’s “Bourne” film franchise that starred Matt Damon, “Treadstone” will explore the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The first season of “Treadstone” follows sleeper agents across the globe, as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.

Here’s 2019 movie reality: “Fast & Furious” offshoot “Hobbs & Shaw” — starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba — opened over 50% bigger than than “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” easily besting Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.

That’s not to say “Once Upon a Time” isn’t doing well enough; it’s already made $78 million. However, it illustrates why studios are reluctant to take risks on originals. Even with Quentin Tarantino directing A-list stars, the film comes in behind a franchise spinoff.

With “The Lion King” placing between the two more recent releases, total business edged up a few million over last year. Year to date remains close to a half million down, over 6%, with “Hobbs” looking like the final summer release expected to open this well.

Irrespective of high-end media coverage and awards potential, “Hobbs” hits core moviegoers’ sweet spot much more than “Once Upon a Time.

Patrick J. Adams will return for the final season of “Suits,” Variety has learned.

Adams will reprise his role as Mike Ross at mid-season to get involved in a case that will put him toe to toe with his former mentor Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and Samantha Wheeler (Katherine Heigl).

Adams previously starred on the hit USA series, but departed the show in its seventh season. In the beginning of the series, Ross was able to impress Specter with his encyclopedic knowledge of the law despite never having officially passed the bar, securing Ross a position at Specter’s law firm. In the end of Season 7, Ross left the firm to move to Seattle with his wife, Rachel (Meghan Markle).

Thirteen years ago this week, Marvel announced that Jon Favreau would develop and direct “Iron Man.” The film would be the first of what we would come to know as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a remarkable 23-film series that has become the dominant financial force in studio filmmaking.

A scan of the top-grossing action franchises from 2004-2007 reveals how Hollywood’s concept of a big-budget tentpole director has changed. “Spider-Man” rebooted under the swooping cartoon style of Sam Raimi. “Transformers” was defined by the clashing metallic ballet of a Michael Bay film. Gore Verbinski’s playful precision gave “Pirates of the Caribbean” its distinctive verve. And when the Jason Bourne franchise took a heady, gritty turn under Paul Greengrass, it was a shift defined by the director’s unique handheld approach to action.

You could watch 30 seconds of an action scene from any of these films and identify the filmmakers’ fingerprints.

MGM has hired Amy Jump, the screenwriter on Ben Wheatley’s “Free Fire” and “High-Rise,” to write the screenplay for “Tomb Raider 2” starring Alicia Vikander, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Jump is also writing “Freak Shift” with Wheatley, which is currently in preproduction with Film4. Universal Pictures has picked up rights to the historical drama “The News of the World” with Tom Hanks attached to star.

The project, based on the best-selling novel by Paulette Jiles set in the days following the Civil War, was previously in development at Fox 2000. Disney decided to retire the Fox 2000 label last month as part of its purchase of the 20th Century Fox film studio, opting to go ahead only with projects that were already in production.

Paul Greengrass is in talks to direct and re-unite with Hanks. The duo’s most recent collaboration was “Captain Phillips.”

Luke Davies (“Lion”) wrote the screenplay for “The News of the World.” Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce the film through their Playtone banner with Gail Mutrux through Pretty Pictures. Gregory Goodman also produces.
