Per Variety, a preview image from Highest 2 Lowest shows Washington in a sweater and baseball cap riding the subway. The first-look image comes with confirmation that the A24 blockbuster will debut out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival next month, with Washington set to attend the annual event. The reunion with Lee continues a 35-year career trend, marking the fifth collaboration between the actor and filmmaker.

Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 crime thriller, High and Low, which chronicles a shoe company executive who's extorted as part of an abduction gone wrong.

Spike Lee has said his upcoming feature Highest 2 Lowest will premiere Out of Competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24).

The crime drama, which stars Denzel Washington, was not announced during the press conference earlier today (April 10), but Lee confirmed the news on his Instagram shortly after.

“Bon Jour. Good Morning. Whaddup? Da New Spike Lee Joint-highest 2 Lowest Starring My Brother Denzel Washington Has Been Invited To Da 2025 Cannes International Film Festival(In The Out Of Competition Category)”, the caption read.

Highest 2 Lowest is an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller. A24 is producing alongside Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures.

You probably know that the lineup for this year’s Cannes Film Festvial has been revealed and that we will get some very exciting premieres this year, including but not limited to Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, and Ari Aster’s Eddington.

Filmmaker Spike Lee took to his Instagram account to give fans a first glimpse of his upcoming Highest 2 Lowest, a remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic film noir High and Low, starring Denzel Washington. In the post, Lee thanked "the judge and jury for the not guilty verdict," referring to rapper and Highest 2 Lowest co-star A$AP Rocky's acquittal on felony assault charges on Feb. 18, 2025.

Alongside the caption, Lee shared a still of Rocky from the film, wearing what appears to be an orange prison uniform. Very little is know about the project other than it's a "reinterpretation of the great Kurosawa," according to Lee (via Variety). The original film, High and Low, follows Kingo Gondo (frequent Kurosawa collaborator Toshiro Mifune), a wealthy shoe company executive whose chauffeur's son is mistakenly kidnapped and ransomed for 30 million yen.

Legendary director Spike Lee holds the highest regard for iconic actor and long-time collaborator Denzel Washington, considering some of his biggest films featured the fellow Oscar winner. As they prepare to release their latest project together, Lee believes Washington is the "best actor" around and credits the actor's impact on his career.

Speaking at the Red Sea Film Festival (via Deadline), Lee expressed how much he savoured his first film alongside Washington since 2006's Inside Man. According to the veteran filmmaker, he is "blessed" to have worked with Washington on five films spanning over three decades. “Someone pointed out to me that the last time we worked together was 18 years ago. I was surprised because it didn’t feel that way. I’m very blessed to have done five films together, he is arguably the best actor on the planet,” Lee said.

The opening credits to last night’s broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” told viewers they’d get to see something they really like: a new short film from Please Don’t Destroy, the small troupe of writers who make frenetic vignettes that often shock as much as they delight. What was delivered, however, was decidedly different.

The three-person “Pdd” team did turn up on screen, but not during the show. Instead, members Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy were part of a commercial from insurance giant Allstate that appeared during an ad break and had the trio holding forth opposite “Mayhem,” the longstanding ad character who has been played by actor Dean Winters for more than a decade. The original Please Don’t Destroy sketch that was supposed to air on “SNL” was cut by producers due to time constraints, according to a person familiar with the matter, and has been made available online.

For Saturday Night Live’s 50th season, however, a handful were willing to put their brands in Lorne Michaels’ hands.

NBCUniversal ad sales chief Mark Marshall was joined by several SNL sponsors for a panel during New York Advertising Week, exploring just how NBC incorporated the marketing messages into the broadcasts and online in a way that is authentic to the show … without terrifying the brand managers.

“We’ve been very protective about, how do we let brands get close to this IP, because occasionally — and some of you have been on phone calls with me — the brands become the butt of the joke, occasionally,” Mark Marshall said.

Per ComicBookMovie.com, Lukic shared how it was even joked about during the recording session that Conroy was recording Batman lines for the final time. However, it wasn't truly intended at the time for that to be the final performance of Conroy as the character. Lukic noted how nobody knew at the time that Conroy was ill, and he's not even sure if the voice actor himself was aware just yet.

A newly released preview for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part 3 teases the final Batman performance of the late, great Kevin Conroy. Fans of HBO's Oz may be spending more time behind bars if a revival series happens, as has been teased by one of the show's stars. The tease comes ahead of the YouTube release of a sequel short film made for the show.

Starting from the show's very first episode that aired in 1997, Kirk Acevedo played inmate Miguel Alvarez. While he was able to spend some time on the outside during the series, he was back in Emerald City in the series finale. The imaginative and groundbreaking prison drama "Oz" is getting a short sequel from its original creator, according to series star Kirk Acevedo. The actor who played inmate Miguel Alvarez for six seasons of the HBO series took to X/Twitter this week to spread the word about "Zo," a YouTube short film from series writer-creator Tom Fontana. According to Acevedo, the short is set to star Dean Winters, who played ultra-violent prisoner Ryan O'Reily in the show's original run, and Lee Tergesen, who played Tobias Beecher, an attorney-turned-inmate who was forced to adapt to harsh prison conditions. Christoph Shrewe, whose credits include "Mr. Robot," "Criminal Minds," and "Fear the Walking Dead," will direct the upcoming short.

The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.

Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

A source privy to the film's production confirmed Hamill's casting opposite the late Kevin Conroy, who will posthumously return as the voice of Batman. The news has yet to be confirmed by Hamill's representative or Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, but fans have been clamoring for both actors' return in the final installment of DC Animated's Tomorrowverse. Hamill recently stated it's unlikely that he will ever play Joker again, having committed to only reprise the role if Conroy voices Batman.

Was Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 6 the end of the story, or just the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the venerable detective?

Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.

Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.

The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.

In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.
