"Doctor Who" season 2, episode 2, titled "Lux," is a statement of intent. Apart from providing all the usual thrills and spills of a great episode of the venerable sci-fi series, it also ticks the boxes on other modern "Doctor Who" staples, such as tackling social issues and proving that the series continues to have its finger on the fandom's pulse.
Here, the Doctor and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) find themselves in 1950s Miami, where the mysterious appearance of a moonlight-animated cartoon character called Mister Ring-a-Ding (voiced by Alan Cumming) provides the episode's central mystery. Still, while they tackle a succession of serious issues, from the grim reality of the era's segregation to the extremely "Doctor Who" twist that Mister Ring-a-Ding is one of the ultra-powerful chaos gods that have been plaguing this incarnation...

The creatures of the night, what music they make -- especially in Ryan Coogler's haunting but hugely entertaining new vampire horror film, "Sinners." The latest from the "Black Panther" director has Michael B. Jordan pulling double-duty as Smoke and Stack, twin brothers returning home to 1930s Mississippi to set up their own club, only to find some nightmarish outsiders trying to get on the guest list. The claret-covered terror leading this choir of monsters, Remmick, is played by Jack O'Connell, a British talent whose name is undoubtedly bigger on one side of the pond than the other ... though that could -- and should -- be changing in the very near future.
At 34, O'Connell has already collaborated with some impressively big names, including George Clooney, Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, and Ben Mendelsohn. He wouldn't have gotten anywhere, however, without springing to stardom at a young age and delivering some career-defining...

Could ’28 Years Later’ contend for Oscars? Here’s the complete awards history of the ’28’ franchise.

The most frightening zombies to ever appear on the big screen are back, and faster than ever. But can they run all the way to the 2026 Oscars?
Set almost three decades after 28 Days Later (2003) and 28 Weeks Later (2007), the first two films in Alex Garland's horror franchise, 28 Years Later is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 20. Garland is back as the writer and Danny Boyle, who directed the first flick, returns to direct. (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed and cowrote the sequel.) The latest trailer (below) dropped this morning.
The new movie stars Jodie Comer as Isla, a pregnant woman; Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, a scavenger and Isla's husband; and Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, a knowledgable fellow survivor. The plot follows a group of people who've avoided zombie attacks for decades by living on an isolated island. When one member goes to the mainland, he discovers...

Every new season of Black Mirror launches a feverish debate over which episode was the best. Emmy voters gave three consecutive Best TV Movie awards to "San Junipero" (2017), "USS Callister" (2018), and "Bandersnatch" (2019), but how does the entire fandom rate the best and worst installments? We've consulted the cumulative IMDb scores for all seasons and have come up with the definitive ranking of Black Mirror episodes. Can you guess the No. 1 choice?
Season 7 was released in April 2025 and brought the total number of episodes and specials to 34. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series began on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix (and becoming a worldwide phenomenon) in 2016. The show took a four-year break after Season 5, thanks in part to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, but that just gave people even more time to relive their favorite episodes from the beginning.

The world has changed a lot since “Black Mirror” premiered in 2011; mostly as the lines between fact and fiction blur. The sci-fi show from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones became shorthand for our bleakest and most dystopic realities, whether that was a caricature rising to the highest office in the nation, technology used to monitor and manipulate human behavior, or alternate realities and artificial intelligence.
With Season 7 now on Netflix — after the questionable prescience and potency of Season 6 — IndieWire is updating our ranking of every installment. Comparing episodes of an anthology series like this one is inherently tricky, even if there is a certain “We’re all doomed” throughline present in most..
Arranging the episodes by quality also doesn’t guarantee the ideal viewing order, but IndieWire’s list naturally punctures defeatism with hope. We don’t recommend binge-viewing, but if you want to journey back through “Black Mirror,” allow...

The Academy Awards are an odd tradition. Every year, voters from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (becoming one of these voters is itself a somewhat mystified bureaucratic nightmare) nominate and award feature films in a number of categories.
Even ignoring the flaws in the process -- such as potential mis-categorization (see co-leads Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin breezing their way to Oscar wins by competing as "supporting actors") -- the prestige and preeminence of the Oscars gives way to a false air of objectivity regarding its honorees. It creates the illusion that winning films are inarguably the best, rather than the beneficiaries of the aggregation of the subjective opinions of a relatively small and unavoidably biased stable of Hollywood elites.
This is all to say, while the Academy Awards are a lot of fun, they are simply unable to honor every film that deserves an award. Below,...

I was happy to see Christopher Walken back in Hollywood last year after his four-year-long hiatus from films. He is one of those actors who could easily slip into a character and make it his own. The villainous turn in Dune: Part Two was a walk in the park for Walken, who had played far more devious villains in his career.
To jog your memory, Walken played one of my favorite Bond villains. In Roger Moore’s final outing as Agent 007 in A View to a Kill, Walken played Max Zorin, the Nazi tech businessman who wants to monopolize the microchip market. He commits a lot of devious acts throughout the film, making everyone hate him to the core.

Citing “a real vitality of cinema,” Cannes Film Festival’s Thierry Fremaux said the selection committee watched almost 3,000 films this year.
“Everyone wants to make movies,” he said at the end of this year’s press conference. “People said cinema was dead during the pandemic, but it is very much alive.”
With a record 2,909 feature submissions this year from some 156 countries, Fremaux cited a “universality of both thinking and in terms of geography, Egyptian films, Brazilian films, Ukrainian films, Asian films. These movies depict the world that artists want to show, a world that is not only difficult, filled with tension and violence,...

Exclusive: Richard Linklater’s Cannes Competition-bound Nouvelle Vague, his homage to Jean-Luc Godard’s 1959 New Wave classic A Bout de Souffle (Breathless), has been boarded for international sales by Vincent Maraval’s Goodfellas.
The anticipated French-language film reconstructs the story behind Godard’s cinema classic and is a fitting addition this morning to the Cannes lineup.
Characters in the film are understood to include cinema legends Godard, Jean Cocteau, Robert Bresson, Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Pierre Melville, Eric Rohmer, Agnes Varda and Jacques Rivette.
French actor Guillaume Marbeck is portraying Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch plays Breathless star Jean Seberg and newcomer Aubry Dullin portrays Jean Paul Belmondo.
There are rumours the film is shot in black and white and in 4:3 ratio. Arp Selection produces and distributes in France. Screenwriters include Holly Gent, Vince Palmo, Michèle Halberstadt and Laetitia Masson.

Among the lineup for the Cannes Film Festival’s 78th edition are some big names from Hollywood and global cinema. We already knew that Tom Cruise will light the fuse on Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on May 14 out of competition, while there was plenty of speculation that Scarlett Johansson would have a pair of movies on the Croisette. The latter has now been confirmed with Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great set for Un Certain Regard, and her acting reteam with Wes Anderson in his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, in Competition. Also confirmed is Ari Aster’s Eddington with Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.
Many more stars are potentially in store now that the bulk of the official selection has been revealed. Not everyone is confirmed to attend the Riviera shindig, but here’s a look at some of the possibilities.

New films from Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater and the Dardenne brothers will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Cannes organizers announced at a press conference in Paris on Thursday.
Anderson will be back in Cannes with “The Phoenician Scheme,” which premiered a baffling trailer at CinemaCon last week. Linklater is heading to France with a bold movie, “Nouvelle Vague,” which tackles the sacred ground of Jean-Luc Godard and the filming of “Breathless” in the 1960s. The Dardenne brothers have “Young Mothers,” which gives them a chance to become the first filmmakers to win the Palme d’Or three times.
Actors in the festival making their directorial debuts include Scarlett Johansson, who is in Un Certain Regard with “Eleanor the Great,” starring Joan Squibb; and Harris Dickinson, the star of the Palme d’Or winner “The Triangle of Sadness,” with “Urchin.”

There are things that define the styles of various filmmakers. While the atmosphere of a David Fincher film is always new and darker than the previous one, there are certain roots that he touches now and again. The uniqueness and genius of David Fincher, however, isn’t being a better version of a M. Night Shyamalan or being a filmmaker inspired by a certain Alfred Hitchcock; it’s in being and making something that stands on its own. He doesn’t weave around expositions and makes solid ground with the written work in his hands. He believes in his writers and the actors involved, and he squeezes them till the last drop of perfection.
As Fincher turns a year older and definitely wiser, we take a look back at his amazing filmography. Making a toast to him, we rank his films from the weakest to the best. We haven’t...

Popcorn Fincher.
After a month of doppelgängers and deception, including discussions of cam girl thriller, Cam (listen), 1978 alien invasion Invasion of the Body Snatchers (listen), and the original The Stepford Wives (listen), Trace and I are ready to decompress with a simple, elegant David Fincher title.
In 2002’s Panic Room, Jodie Foster plays Meg, a recently divorcee who moves into a posh townstone (town home meets brownstone) with her pre-teen daughter, Sarah (Kristen Stewart). Unbeknownst to them, the eccentric recluse who owned the property before them left a large fortune in the titular room’s safe…and there are three opportunistic thieves who will do nearly anything to get the cash.
What follows is a cat and mouse thriller as idiot Junior (Jared Leto), sympathetic Burnham (Forest Whitaker), and wild card Raoul (Dwight Yoakam) try to break in while Meg and Sarah attempt to keep them out. Will the thieves...

From the Oscars to the Golden Globes, Hollywood has no shortage of starry awards shows — but there’s only one at which pop princesses like Lizzo and Katy Perry rub elbows with Nobel Prize laureates, while Paris Hilton takes selfies with scientists developing gene-editing techniques that can cure cancer.
The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as the “Oscars of Science,” was founded by Silicon Valley titans Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, Julia and Yuri Milner, and Anne Wojcicki. Now in its 13th year, the show honors scientists, doctors and researchers who have made significant breakthroughs in their respective fields, and sends winners home with $3 million checks.
This year’s ceremony took place at Santa Monica’s Barker Hanger on Saturday, and celebrity attendees — including Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jodie Foster, Alicia Keys, Drew Barrymore, Christina Aguilera, Mr. Beast, Gayle King, Jeremy Strong, Jessica Chastain, Kate Hudson, Olivia Wilde,...

If there are a select number of pillars upholding the Hollywood complex as we know it, Ron Howard is no doubt one of them. He's been an prominent actor, director and producer for over the past six decades and clearly shows no signs of stopping, with his latest film "Eden" set for release next month. Howard's presence as an industry fixture is so prolific each stage of his career is a story unto itself. Long before he became an Academy Award-winning filmmaker ("A Beautiful Mind") or one of the co-founders of Image Entertainment, Howard made a considerable name for himself in the world of television.
In the same vein as Jodie Foster, Howard was thrust into the industry at such a young age and built his legacy on its foundation. Although "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Happy Days" are considered the two landmarks of his television career, you would likely...

One of the hardest aspects for any talent turning down a project is watching it flourish beyond their wildest expectations without them. Michelle Pfeiffer turned down the role of Clarice Starling in "The Silence of the Lambs," and the film went on to win five Academy Awards, with one of those going to lead actress Jodie Foster. There are also nuclear-level missed opportunities like Matt Damon and James Cameron's "Avatar," where he not only turned down the role that Sam Worthington eventually played, but a 10 percent margin of the profits. But then you have cases like "The Matrix," where all of the possible casting outcomes open up a multiversal rift where the film takes on a completely different stature in each of them.
Lana and Lily Wachowski's 1999 sci-fi mind-bender was not only a critical and box office sensation, but ultimately went on to become one of the most influential films ever made.

Streaming services haven't only facilitated the release of movies and TV shows at the same time across the world but also gave viewers a chance to rewatch or discover old titles, as well. Now, one of the longest-running TV series of all time is getting its chance.
Gunsmoke, which was the second Western television series for adults, is now finding success online. The series debuted in 1955, just four days after the first Western TV series, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Per Matthew Belloni, Gunsmoke just entered the Nielsen charts for acquired shows on a list filled with current shows, 50 years after its series finale.

It's not uncommon for aspiring actors to start young, but there wasn't any time wasted when it came to queer icon Jodie Foster. She started in commercials as young as three and made her television debut as early as six in an episode of "Mayberry R.F.D." Long before she played the vulnerable defendant in "The Accused" or faced off against Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs," the child prodigy slowly made her way into film with roles in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Freaky Friday." By the time she was 12, Foster was not only working on her second Martin Scorsese picture with "Taxi Driver," but it was also the role that led her first of five Oscar nominations — and two wins.
In the interim before her big breaks, however, Foster was kept super busy when it came to guest appearances on a plethora of television shows. She...

Was Robert De Niro’s famous “Are you talkin’ to me?” line from Taxi Driver improvised?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
It was during the gritty, neon-lit haze of 1976, when Martin Scorsese dropped a film that would etch itself into cinematic history for decades to come. His cinematic masterpiece ‘Taxi Driver’ provided a glimpse of a dark, feverish descent into urban alienation, and introduced audiences to Travis Bickle, an ex-marine and Vietnam veteran, working as a taxi-driving insomniac whose paranoia and disdain for the city’s decay simmered into something unforgettable.
And, of course, no moment in the film resonates quite like that scene – the mirror, the gun, and the line that would cement itself in pop culture forever, “Are you talkin’ to me?”
The iconic line wasn’t just another scripted monologue. In fact it was pure, unfiltered Robert De Niro and furthermore, it was improvised, raw, and eerily perfect, that...

Warning: The following article contains extensive spoilers for the 1976 film Taxi Driver.Universally praised in 1976, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver is a nightmarish glimpse into post-Vietnam America without clear-cut heroes or villains. Unbeknownst to fans at the time, this film went through a radical rewrite, changing the race of one of the most crucial characters in the film. The race-swap is something that has come up in conversation; Quentin Tarantino notably second-guesses the decision as a clumsy compromise forced upon the film by filmmakers who lost their nerve.

If houses could talk, the one in David Fincher’s Panic Room would have both plenty and very little to say about the Altmans. In this 2002 film, Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart’s characters, a recently divorced mother and her young daughter, ended up only living in their Upper West Side “townstone” for a brief period. Nevertheless, their stay was nothing short of eventful. Bizarre and harrowing, these tenants’ domestic nightmare was manifested with technical boldness and performed with dramatic flair. Today, Fincher’s endeavor in popcorn filmmaking isn’t held anywhere in the same regard as his other works, but even so, beneath Panic Room’s polished surface lurks a story teeming with texture.
David Koepp’s script for Panic Room sounds like an update of Lady in a Cage, that 1964 film where Olivia de Havilland’s rich character becomes trapped within her home’s built-in elevator, and is...

No one flexes their curves with confidence and glam better than our favorite Modern Family bombshell Sofía Vergara. But, while she has been proud of her stunning Latina physique that has defined her in the industry, Vergara had to turn down her sultry structure for one particular role—Netflix’s Griselda.
According to the actress who portrayed the Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in the crime drama, she wasn’t forced to hide her body. Instead, trying to be true to the character, Sofía Vergara mentioned wrapping herself tightly, so that her signature curvy figure wouldn’t become an obstacle while crafting Griselda’s look.

Kelly McGillis might have been Hollywood's most underrated actress in the 1980s. For instance, although she received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for her breakout role as an Amish woman in Peter Weir's 1985 thriller Witness, it was her on-screen romantic interest and protector Harrison Ford who was nominated for an Academy Award (the first and only one of his career). She followed up Witness by playing the romantic interest of another one of Hollywood's biggest stars, Tom Cruise, in Tony Scott's schmaltzy action blockbuster Top Gun, the highest-grossing film of 1986. However, she was not asked to return for the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which McGillis attributed to her age and appearance in a 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight.
But it wasn't just McGillis' male co-stars who got more appreciation than her. The 1988 courtroom drama The Accused saw star Jodie Foster (deservedly) receive many awards for her performance as a...

Who’s the most legendary movie icon to lend a voice on The Simpsons?
Given the show’s 36 seasons, there’s plenty of competition for that accolade, including Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman and Kirk Douglas. But for pure Hollywood glamour, it’s hard to beat Elizabeth Taylor, the voice behind Maggie Simpson’s first word. “She lived up to everything you would expect Elizabeth Taylor to be,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly in 2011. “She came in, she had a little dog, and she wore her ring, which was huge. Science fiction movies built the foundation of the feature film medium at the turn of the century, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon being one of the first movies that could be considered to be a blockbuster. The best science fiction films have always been the ones that were capable of merging the pure entertainment of seeing fantastical universes and space-faring adventures with themes that reveal something about the human condition.
As one of the most important and influential film critics of all time, Roger Ebert championed science fiction filmmaking that pushed the boundaries of what was previously thought to be possible in the medium, bringing new thrills and ideas to the big screen. According to him, the best science fiction movies tell stories that are both larger-than-life and relatable to a wide audience of viewers.

What’s going to be this year’s “Anora”? As the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaches, that’s the question for artistic director Thierry Fremaux and movie buffs around the world.
A month before Cannes Film Festival’s press conference, the official selection is still very much a work in progress, with little reliable information filtering through about which movies have already been invited. In fact, as of Friday — despite the volume of splashy prediction stories — it appears that only three films have so far been given a golden ticket to compete in Cannes. Variety can reveal that one of them is Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated “Father Mother Sister Brother“ starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Tom Waits.
The last edition of the festival, which Fremaux had warned would be slightly weaker due to the impact of the double Hollywood strikes, proved to be anything but. Headlined by Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,...

Hey! Millennials! Wanna hear something scary? Somehow, it's been 22 whole years since Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan first swapped bodies in Mark Waters' pop-punk driven noughties classic Freaky Friday, a fan-favourite remake of Disney's own 1976 Jodie Foster starrer. Wanna hear something exciting though? Two decades on and Jlc and Lohan are back back back for Freakier Friday, a full-on legacy sequel from The High Note and Late Night director Nisha Ganatra. And, as the title (which we called!) suggests, things are about to get a whole lot freakier for Tess and Anna Coleman second time around. Check out the trailer below and you'll see what we mean;
Pink Slip are back! Chad Michael Murray is back! And all the memories of Freaky Friday are coming back to us all at once — along with the sobering realisation that Lindsay Lohan is now just seven years younger than Jamie Lee...

A great villain can make or break a film and they have been a staple of storytelling since the dawn of cinema. There have been hundreds of incredible, iconic villains audiences have loved to hate. Some movies are even so rich as to have more than one of these incredible foes.
Villains can be used to gain a different perspective, or sometimes simply be agents of chaos to shake up the tale. No matter what, villains add so much flavor to a film, and more than one can be even more fun.

The trailer for Freakier Friday has arrived. The movie is a legacy sequel to the 2003 comedy Freaky Friday, which adapted the book of the same name by Mary Rodgers and followed teenager Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) accidentally switching bodies with her mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis). The upcoming Freakier Friday, which was directed by Nisha Ganatra, will expand the premise even more, following the duo switching bodies with Anna's daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and her boyfriend Eric's (Manny Jacinto) daughter Lily (Sophia Hammons).
Disney has now released the official trailer for Freakier Friday. It opens with Anna and Tess visiting a palm reader played by Vanessa Bayer, who recognizes that their life lines have crossed before, something that taught them "a lesson that may serve you again." When the four-way body swap occurs, hijinks ensue while Chappell Roan's "Hot To Go!" blares on the soundtrack, including the teenagers in...

Make good choices!
After 22 years, Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) are getting ready to swap bodies — again. Disney released the first official trailer for the long-awaited sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday on when? Friday, of course.
The trailer shows Lohan and Curtis switching personalities — but this time, there’s a multigenerational twist. Now Anna has a daughter (Julia Butters), and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, (Sophia Hammons.) In the new film — which will hit theaters this summer — there’s a four-way body swap when lightning indeed strikes again. (The trailer also saw Chad Michael Murray reprise his role as Jake when he shows up at the end on his motorcycle.)
The official logline reads: “Years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might strike twice.

Netflix's "The Electric State" isn't very good. By most metrics, it's a complete disaster — a movie so expensive and so devoid of purpose that it honestly defies logic. That's especially true if you've read the book it's based on by Swedish writer and artist Simon Stålenhag.
Stålenhag's books each center on different sci-fi ideas, but the format generally stays the same. They're big books filled with gorgeous digital art of worlds very like our own, but also different. These images are accompanied by one manner or another of prose, telling a linear story or at the very least adding context to the scenes being shown. Where "The Electric State" shows an American landscape devastated by drone warfare and VR addiction, "Tales from the Loop" and "Things from the Flood," Stålenhag's two prior books, follow a Swedish town and the mysterious scientific research facility it holds, as well as the...

Matthew McConaughey may be best known for his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers’ Club, his excellent work on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, or his immensely likable appearances in a slew of 2000s romcoms such as How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. However, one of his earliest roles shows his depth and range unlike any other: just five months after his work opposite Jodie Foster in Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi drama Contact, he appeared in Steven Spielberg’s 1997 historical drama Amistad. Here’s why it’s an unmissable performance.

The 1990s transformed the movie industry. It was the decade in which filmmakers began to push further beyond traditional filmmaking with the help of new technologies, new ways of storytelling, and themes that challenged commonly accepted societal norms.
Independent cinema grew in numbers, special effects became ever so popular, and complex, often controversial subject matter made its mark. The growth of the overall film industry can also be attributed to the new expectations from moviegoers.
