Every so often, a truly gripping movie will get panned by audiences and critics alike. Hidden gems get buried deeper, and the ideal audience for the movie never finds it. Alexandre Aja’s 2008 Mirrors, starring Kiefer Sutherland as Ben Carson, is one of those films. With a lowly 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, Mirrors has not seen a lot of love. A remake of Kim Sung-ho’s 2003 directorial debut, Into the Mirror, Mirrors takes obvious joy in playing with horror tropes. Mirrors blends intense gore, supernatural hauntings, and psychological twists to keep viewers glued to the screen, even when they’re wincing away.

Halle Berry returns to the horror genre in Never Let Go (2024), a psychological thriller directed by Alexandre Aja. Released in theatres worldwide last month, the horror thriller is now available on Video on Demand services. Exploring themes of fear, trauma, and family bonds through the story of a mother and her two sons trapped in their home by a mysterious and malevolent force, the film is tense with ambiguity surrounding every aspect of the tale. If you were baffled by the Never Let Go ending and want to understand how the film questions the nature of reality, blending elements of supernatural horror with psychological dread you are at the right place.
With a strong performance from Berry, Never Let Go dives into the complexities of grief and paranoia, although, some of its more over-the-top elements and forced metaphors could have used some fine-tuning to have an impact.

‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:
I Come In Peace (1990)
It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

Earlier this year, we learned that, forty-nine years after playing a major role in the Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (and fourteen years after making an appearance in Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D), Richard Dreyfuss had been cast in another film that promises to be packed with aquatic thrills, Vigilante Diaries director Christian Sesma’s Into the Deep. The film is set to receive a digital, On Demand, and limited theatrical release on January 24th – and with that date just one month away, a trailer has arrived online! A man finds himself trapped in a room with no way out in director Nicolai Schümann’s thriller. Here’s our The Lonely Musketeer review.
In director Nicolai Schümann’s The Lonely Musketeer, Rupert (Edward Hogg) wakes up in a room with no way out. He has no clue how he got there, at first thinking it might have been the result of a particularly wild night out. Then things begin to get very serious when he realises there really is no way out and no one knows where he is.
All Rupert has is his trusty Nokia 3310 phone, revealing the film to be somewhat of a period piece. Thankfully, the Nokia 3310’s battery would last for days rather than mere hours like this writer’s iPhone. It’s his one connection to the outside world and his only way of getting help. Audiences typically have a love-and-hate relationship with gore in movies. For most of us, it's the cinematic equivalent of rubbernecking a car accident. As terrified as we generally are, we can't help but stare. That's the feeling many of us are searching for when we sit down to watch each new horror film. A little over two decades ago, one French horror movie provided exactly that and then some.
In 2003, filmmaker Alexandre Aja unleashed a bloody, disgusting, and unrelenting horror film named High Tension. The movie became notorious quickly, not just for its relentless use of gore but also because of its highly controversial ending, and immediately turned Aja into one of Hollywood's most in-demand horror directors. Extreme violence, bloodshed, and controversy, what more could a horror fan want?

One of the more vaguely defined subcategories of the genre is survival horror, a term that originated from video games. After all, survival is the central goal of any character unlucky enough to find themselves in a horror movie. Survival horror has more to do with the environment than the main antagonistic threat; it features hostile environments and scarce resources.
It’s not just a lethal killer or creature that protagonists must battle, but environmental risks like dehydration, starvation, or exposure. Sometimes, there’s no extraneous threat at all, and death comes in the form of nature itself. Those who want to survive will have to think on their feet, adapting quickly to stave off unforgiving elements.
This week’s streaming picks highlight survival horror movies that see their characters battling against multiple threats in intense bids to outlive, outlast, and of course, ultimately survive.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Sam Raimis recent release, Dont Move, makes its steady way toward becoming one of the best survival thrillers in recent memory. The movie adds a twist to the cat-and-mouse chase, taking its horror to unexplored heights. Although the presence of a serial killer is often enough to send chills down the spine of most audiences, Dont Moves failing female body verges into true nightmare territory. Having been injected with a paralytic, the final girl becomes doomed to the will of her attacker.
For those who enjoyed watching Iris's blood-curdling efforts to escape her perpetrator, it's worth noting that several other films also offer adrenaline-pumping narratives with a twist. Leading the Dont Moves cast, actress Kelsey Asbille elevates a suicidal woman into a female rage icon, able to convey so much with the littlest breath. Building toward Dont Moves ending, Iris inner force proves a resourceful adversary against an otherwise experienced killer.

The 16th edition of the Lumière Film Festival kicked off in high style, with a glittering lineup of stars including Benicio del Toro, Tim Burton, Monica Bellucci and Vanessa Paradis plus high-profile directors Costa-Gavras and Giuseppe Tornatore gracing the red carpet in Lyon.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Never Let Go
While Never Let Go did feature a few nasty surprises, the horror movie steered clear of one twist that no viewer wanted to see. Even the darkest horror movies rarely cross certain cultural taboos. It is unusual for slasher villains to kill children, for instance, since this is too gratuitously nasty for audiences who want to guiltily cheer the masked murderer. Although Never Let Go's twist ending was bleak, the movies story did manage to avoid this issue by sidestepping a particularly grim twist. Director Alexandre Ajas psychological horror skirted close to a major taboo but backed down.

Daniel Radcliffe may have first charmed the world as the boy who lived, but in the years since the Harry Potter series ended, the accomplished actor has distinguished himself in a variety of unique projects. Between his recent win at the Tonys for Merrily We Roll Along to his starring role in more indie projects like Swiss Army Man, Radcliffe's versatility as a performer has defined his adult career, and one of his first movies after The Deathly Hallows -- Part 2 saw him tackle a much darker mode of magic. Horns, the 2013 film by director Alexandre Aja and based on the bestselling dark fantasy novel by author Joe Hill, is a twisted tale of love and hidden darkness, showcasing an early instance of Radcliffe venturing into more varied roles.

Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. The finished film was given a theatrical release on September 20th (you can read our review Here)… and it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. It has only earned $21 million worldwide. Alexandre Aja is one of those directors whose name may not be immediately recognizable to all audiences, but whose films certainly are. Anyone with a passing interest in horror will have at least heard of his movies and have probably seen at least one. With titles like The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Piranha 3D, Crawl and Horns, his work is extensive and recognizable. His latest title, Never Let Go, might be his most ambitious and compelling film yet. Starring Halle Berry, Percy Daggs IV, and Anthony B. Jenkins, this ambiguous and mind-bending thriller has audiences flocking to the theaters and picking it apart in order to try and figure out the truth behind the complex story.

A while back, Cocaine Bear surprised everyone with its box office haul. For fans of animal attack movies, this is not a shock. People love animal attack films and can’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it’s the man vs. nature theme of the films, the animals themselves getting revenge on humans, or just the all-around fun these films bring. No matter what, they are enjoyable for audiences in theaters. There has been a long history of animals attacking humans on film. Some films that are classified as ‘classic’ cinema fall into the animal attack category. We can always use more movies of animals rampaging through humans on the big screen. What are some of the best animal attack movies?
Grizzly (1976)
Since bears seem to be on everyone’s brain this weekend; then we might as well start with this classic.

American Animals director Bart Layton is assembling a new Hollywood dream team as Halle Berry joins Chris Hemsworth for the filmmaker’s upcoming thriller Crime 101. Berry, also known as the Master of Dog Fu (watch John Wick 3 – Parabellum), is fresh off her buddy comedy with Mark Wahlberg, The Union, while her latest horror film, Never Let Go, is lighting up silver screens this month. The Amazon MGM Studios project takes inspiration from Don Winslow‘s short story Crime 101, with Layton planning to release the film in theaters next year.
While plot details remain mysterious, Deadline says Crime 101 contains Heat-like elements. According to the synopsis for Winslow’s novella, the story focuses on a string of high-level jewel heists up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. The crimes have gone unsolved for years, mainly because the perpetrator has lived by a strict code he calls “Crime 101”. Police...

At the heart of Alexandre Aja's latest film, Never Let Go, lies a question: how much do you trust your mother? In context, however, the circumstances go far beyond merely looking both ways before crossing the street. The mother in question is Halle Berry, who plays "Momma," a weary survivalist who will do anything to protect her two tween sons -- Nolan and Samuel -- from a purported multifarious malevolence that only Momma can see. The film is set primarily in and around a remote cabin, sequestered within a verdant thicket, far removed from anyone or anything save for the "Evil" concealed amongst the trees.
What we, the audience, don't know, and what Nolan and Samuel don't know, is whether something is genuinely lurking just beyond the plane of the visible or if Momma is making it up. Per Momma, Evil has overtaken the world, and the cabin serves...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Never Let Go (2024)
While Never Let Go relies heavily on its big twist, I guessed where the horror movies story was heading a month before I even saw it. Horror movie trailers are a mixed blessing. Some, like NEONs viral marketing campaign for Longlegs, can be as unsettling and thrilling as a great horror movie. Others, like the trailers for Alien: Romulus, Speak No Evil, and many more of 2024s biggest genre movies, give away too much plot and leave viewers with no reason to seek out the movie itself. Then there are movies like director Alexandre Ajas Never Let Go.
Related Does Never Let Go Have A Post-Credits Scene?
Alexandre Aja's recently-released supernatural thriller features anxiety-inducing questions throughout, but does anything happen after the credits?

The latest film from French horror director Alexandre Aja is an evil-in-the-woods mystery chiller that’s intent on keeping the audience guessing until the end. As such, it has its moments, thanks to strong performances by the two young leads, but it’s never as satisfying or as scary as it ought to be.
Never Let Go takes place in a remote wooden house in the forest, where Halle Berry’s Momma (the character is never named) is raising her two young, non-identical twin boys Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Samuel (Anthony B Jenkins), apparently in the wake of some apocalyptic event that has befallen the rest of the country. Accordingly, Momma tells the boys that if they leave the house, they must remain tied to it via a length of thick rope,...

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Never Let Go!Never Let Go leaves some ambiguity about the truth of Momma's experiences with The Evil, including whether a girl who died in the forest was real or a manifestation of the haunting spirit. Early on in Halle Berry's horror movie, her character tells her two sons the story of a time when a woman was stranded in the nearby woods due to an injury. The woman repeatedly called out for help, but Momma refused to help her, believing that she was another form taken by Never Let Go's The Evil. Momma let the girl die, thinking she overcame that temptation.
A moment that Momma views as a sign of her strength and opposition to The Evil becomes more questionable as Never Let Go's ending approaches and unfolds. The movie thoroughly explores how The Evil haunts her and her boys, and...

The mental-health horror trend that’s been growing in recent years may be one of the most interesting, terrifying sub-genres around: if the real monsters are in your head, how can you protect your loved ones from them? The Babadook or Take Shelter mined such an idea for nearly unbearable tension; the latest from Alexandre Aja almost pulls off the same trick. Are we watching a tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic nightmare world, or two isolated children struggling with a mother they can’t trust?
Halle Berry plays Momma, a tough-as-nails survivor who’s holed up in a remote cabin in the woods with her twin sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV). The boys nearly worship her, but her insistence that they must always remain physically tied with rope to their house is becoming restrictive as the boys get older, and her insistence on protective rhymes and rules seems eccentric.

The world has ended, or so says Momma, played by Halle Berry. She lives with her two sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and their dog in big wooden house the middle of the woods.
The details of this apocalyptic event are hazy, however Momma repetitively tells her boys that there is an evil out there that can posses you and make you kill your loved ones. This is what had happened to their grandparents and their father and now the trio live in constant fear of the outside world.
The only thing that keeps them safe is the house itself so the only way they can leave is while tied to its foundations on long pieces of rope. If bound to the building they are safe but should that rope break or they stray beyond it, who know what terrible things will happen. That’s...

Though she's regarded as a Hollywood legend and one of the film industry's most notable actors, Halle Berry admits she still finds opportunities "limited" despite her status. The Academy Award winner suggests her status as a Black woman in Hollywood doesn't afford her time to wait for potential Oscar-worthy roles, leading her to take anything she can get.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Berry claimed being a Black woman has reduced her options given how marginalized she and other actors have been throughout the industry, making her more proactive in choosing roles within different genres rather than waiting for major ones. Well, here's the truth of it. As a Black woman, I have never had the luxury of just doing Oscar-worthy performances and movies. I dont even know what that is. Alexandre Ajas new supernatural thriller Never Let Go borrows a twist from one of M. Night Shyamalans most infamous films, but updates it for the modern day. Never Let Go continues the recent trend of high-concept horror, a subgenre of horror that involves simple yet captivating premises and story-telling. The drama and dread builds, as it should in any good horror movie, before Never Let Go ends with an explosive climax born from a twist reveal.
While many horror movies feature twist endings, one filmmaker has made a career out of providing a pivot that audiences arent expecting. From the acclaimed iconic thriller The Sixth Sense to the critical flop Lady in the Water, M. Night Shyamalan typically ensures the ending of his movies are never seen coming, and he isnt afraid to mislead the audience to do it. One of his most famous twists was copied for Never Let Go...

In the latest supernatural thriller from French filmmaker Alexandre Aja, Never Let Go, one mother must face the stark realities and consequences of protecting her children amongst the threats of starvation, isolation and possible death. Led by Halle Berry, the film centers around a single mother called “Momma,” who lives in a deeply secluded cabin in the woods with her two young boys (Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins) in what seems to be a post-apocalyptic world. According to her, the family is all that is left of humanity, and a malevolent force awaits to kill them off each time they scavenge outside for food and supplies, unless they are tethered by a network of protective ropes that ward off the evil spirits. However, when their rations run dangerously low, the boys begin to question if their mom is telling the truth or if there is a functioning society...

Warning: major spoilers for Never Let Go aheadAlexandre Aja's new supernatural horror movie Never Let Go ends with a dark and potentially confusing finale, with the ambiguity surrounding Sam and his Polaroid acting as a mind-melting closing scene. The ending of Never Let Go casts doubt on all the events covered in the tale of isolation and fear, and does virtually nothing to explain the true nature of The Evil that stalks Halle Berry's Momma and her two young sons. With no exposition or clarification provided, it's left to the audience to parse out the movie's final scenes.

When Oscar winner Halle Berry received the script for Never Let Go, she immediately likened it to the time she read the then-unproduced screenplay for A Quiet Place.
