In the 1990s, one name dominated TV miniseries: Stephen King. At the time, King had become the wealthiest writer in history, author of such popular novels as Misery, Carrie, It, The Stand and dozens more. While some of his titles -- Carrie, The Shining -- found homes on the big screen, many more became celebrated TV miniseries, attracting millions of viewers. In 1993, King and ABC partnered to add one more to the miniseries roster: The Tommyknockers.
Based on King’s 1987 novel of the same name -- one of King’s least-favorite of his own works -- The Tommyknockers attracted a wide audience, but earned mixed to negative reviews. Today, it has a reputation as one of the weakest of all King’s adaptations. Viewed more than 30 years later, however, The Tommyknockers stands out as an unusual King story. By the time Rumpelstiltskin was in the works, the slasher model of yesteryear was replaced with something fresh but still familiar enough. Hence the many oddball slashers where the antagonist is neither human nor ordinary. From djinns to scarecrows, the decade saw horror turning to more fantastical inspirations. Mark Jones, whose career began in writing for cartoons and television, essentially kicked off the trend with Leprechaun. And had his first movie not been so successful, his next would have likely never happened.
After striking gold with Leprechaun in the early 1990s, Mark Jones looked to another magical icon for his second horror movie. Two specific on-screen depictions of Rumpelstiltskin influenced Jones’ own unique reimagining; he drew from Shaike Ophir and Billy Barty’s performances, respectively from the vintage anthology show Shirley Temple’s Storybook and an ‘87 movie directed by David Irving. Jones remembered Ophir’s take on the Brothers Grimm character to be particularly creepy.

"Cheers" had just found its Nielsen ratings footing when the sitcom was dealt an unexpectedly tragic blow: Nicholas Colasanto, who'd become the heart of the series as kind-hearted bartender "Coach" Ernie Pantusso, died at the age of 61 of a heart attack.
Of the main cast, Colasanto might've been the most irreplaceable. He provided the show its first heartbreaking moment in the season 1 episode "Coach's Daughter," where he struggles to convince his only child (Allyce Beasley) to not marry her boor of a fiancé. From that moment forward, the writers deployed Coach as a lovably addled fount of accidental wisdom; though irreparably concussed by taking too many baseballs to the noggin during his major league career, the goofball always came through when it counted.
And suddenly, before the conclusion of the series' pivotal third season, he was gone.
"Cheers" still had a deep-bench ensemble with Sam, Diane, Carla, Norm and Cliff,...

Update: In addition to being available on Hulu, the classic Bruce WIllis/ Cybill Shepherd series, Moonlighting, is now coming to digital retailers like iTunes and more. So if you want to own a digital copy of the show, now’s your chance. One caveat: no news on whether the show will be available in Canada, with it still absent from Disney Star here north of the border, making it seem like the music rights are keeping the show from being more widely available.
Original Post: Do bears bear? Do bees be? Does a Hulu subscription sound enticing now that Moonlighting is finally coming to the streaming platform? That’s right, you detectives of romance! All 67 episodes of the classic comedy series starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd will be available to stream on the service beginning on October 10, 2023.

Moonlighting, now streaming on Hulu, was a huge network hit in the 1980s and helped define the era of Prestige TV. Its biggest problem was the production schedule, but on streaming viewers don't have to wait or endure too many reruns. Moonlighting was ahead of its time and a streaming audience could make it a hit once again, just like Suits on Netflix.
The way television is watched may have changed, but audiences aren't all that different today as they were nearly 40 years ago. Thanks to streaming services, "old" shows find new audiences all the time. Suits became a hit on Netflix in 2023, despite the legal drama ending its run on cable in 2019. Moonlighting, which just debuted on Hulu, ended 30 years before Suits, but it could become a massive hit once again. Despite existing for more than a decade, streaming as a mainstream "content delivery" system is still relatively new.

For the first time in the show’s history, all five seasons and 67 episodes of the classic 1980s ABC hour “Moonlighting” will hit the rerun market – streaming exclusively over Hulu beginning October 10. Each installment has been remastered in HD from the original film source and will feature the Grammy-nominated title track recording from Al Jarreau.
The series – which originally ran from 1985 to ’89 – starred Cybill Shepherd and proved a star-making turn for Bruce Willis. It cast Shepherd as fashion model-turned detective agency head Maddie Hayes and Willis as wisecracking private eye David Addison, with Allyce Beasley and Curtis Armstrong featured in plum supporting roles as Agnes Dipesto and Herbert Viola, respectively. Whenever creator and showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron was asked why “Moonlighting” wasn’t available to stream, he would cite the prohibitive expense of acquiring the music rights of the eclectic soundtrack. But that little issue has evidently been rectified.

There wasn't a funnier or sharper show in the mid-1980s than "Moonlighting." Created by Glenn Gordon Caron, the hour-long ABC series starred Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis as Maddie Hayes and David Addison, perpetually squabbling partners in the Blue Moon Detective Agency. It was an odd duck. Caron and the cast took big, genre-hopping swings; one episode might be a musical, the next might be written in iambic pentameter, and another could be a homage to big-screen boxing melodramas. It was arguably the ballsiest network series prior to the 1990 premiere of "Twin Peaks."
And somehow, in the middle of the Reagan era, "Moonlighting" became a Nielsen ratings behemoth.
American television viewers weren't exactly clamoring for an amiably off-kilter riff on "The Thin Man" and 1930s - '40s screwball comedies at the time, but once they saw Shepherd and Willis bantering with Hepburn-Grant ease, they were sold. "Moonlighting" roared...

The first two Silent Night, Deadly Night films get all the glory — to the point where casual horror fans may be surprised to learn that three more installments were produced in the franchise. The 1984 original generated highly publicized controversy by showing its killer dressed as Santa Claus in advertisements, while the 1987 first sequel gained cult status for its over-the-top campiness and liberal reuse of clips from its predecessor.
The series was then relegated to straight-to-video territory with 1989’s Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out, 1990’s Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation, and 1991’s Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker. While the third installment continues the killer Santa plot, the storyline was abandoned for the latter two installments, which each tell an unrelated tale set during Christmastime.

The sitcom "Moonlighting" debuted on ABC on March 3, 1985, and it was unlike any TV show previously seen. It had the quick banter of a 1940s screwball comedy and crazy sexual tension between stars Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd as detective David Addison and former model-turned-detective, Maddy Hayes. "Moonlighting" broke the fourth wall long before "She-Hulk" and "Deadpool" did it on screen, employed a cold open before it was standard, and often showed sets and production staff on camera. The detective agency dramedy series broke with what viewers were used to fairly often, including an episode based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," entitled, "Atomic Shakespeare."
In the episode, Willis appears as Petruchio, a man who marries Katherina, played by Shepherd. If Petruchio can make her a docile wife, he gets her dowry. Look, no one ever said that Shakespeare's sensibilities would work for the 21st century. Still,...

When the universe closes a door, it opens a window. On December 12, Comedy Central confirmed the cancellation of “Detroiters,” a joyous comedy co-starring and co-created by Sam Richardson. On December 13, YouTube Premium released the first season of “Champaign, Ill,” co-starring Richardson and co-created with David Caspe (“Happy Endings”) and a slew of his former writers.
“Champaign, Ill” isn’t quite the second coming of “Detroiters” — its black comic elements stemmed from characters more jaded than Sam (Richardson) and Tim (Tim Robinson) ever were — but the two shows share more than Richardson’s increasingly bankable charms. They both rely on chemistry and creativity, track two best friends who rely on their artistic prowess to succeed in life, and take their show titles from the Midwest.
Most significantly, the new buddy comedy is an absurd, fun, and fresh spin on adults stuck in arrested development. Kicking off in 2003, “Champaign Ill” introduces Ronnie...

Rolling Stone just issued their list of the 'Top 100 Television Shows of All Time.' The rankings, which came from a survey of actors, writers, critics, and producers, includes all the shows you’d expect like Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The Sopranos. And a bunch of other programs that don’t start with the letter “S.” It’s a pretty comprehensive list and a reminder of how many great shows there have been even before what we’re now calling the Golden Age of television. Like any “top” anything list, there’s controversy. And we’re more than happy to dive into that topic. One thing we didn’t do is re-rank everything. If we did that, we’d be here forever and you wouldn’t want to read any further. So rather than that, we’ve just picked three shows that made the list that shouldn’t have and three replacements to fill those gaps.

A quick review of tonight's "Gotham" — and thoughts on future reviewing plans for the show — coming up just as soon as I believe a giant bullfrog lives in my abdomen, controlling my thoughts... "Rogues' Gallery"(*) was relatively streamlined as "Gotham" episodes go, with a bunch of characters (Bruce, Alfred, Nygma, Falcone) absent, and with the Crime of the Week taking up so much focus that the appearances by everyone save Gordon and Bullock felt like cameos. Too often, the show suffers from trying to do too many things at once, which wasn't really the case here. (*) "Gotham" continues to make weird choices with episode titles, whether naming them after characters who barely appear or, here, naming it after a group that won't exist until long after the show ends. (Technically, Penguin and Catwoman are in this one, but only one of them going by their supervillain alias.) The problem with keeping things simple,...

If you thought Gotham had already taken a nose dive right into the deep end of Batman’s future rogues gallery, you’ve got another thing coming. The show may be on winter hiatus right now, but will hit the ground running when it returns in early January and opens the creaky gates of Arkham Asylum.
Jim Gordon was transferred to Arkham in the mid-season finale, and is sure to meet up with a host of familiar inmates while he’s there. Today, Fox released a handful images from the mid-season premiere, “Rogues’ Gallery,” as well as a description of the episode, and they both promise exciting things to come.
Gotham will return on January 5th on Fox. Check out the screens and description below and let us know if you’ll be tuning in.

If Bruce Willis can do another Die Hard movie, we think he can reunite with Cybil Sheperd for a Moonlighting flick. "I want it," Shepard told me at Elle's Women in Hollywood event. "Invite [show creator] Glenn Gordon Caron and tell Bruce Willis! I'm ready." Moonlighting, which ran on ABC for five seasons until March 1989, was a dramedy about two private detectives, David Addison Jr. (Willis) and Maddie Hayes (Shepherd). The series made Willis a household name and helped revitalize Shepherd's career. Allyce Beasley costarred as their loyal receptionist. Guests stars included Orsen Welles (Yes, Orsen Welles!), Tim Robbins, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Moore (she was Willlis' wife at...
