The Japanese media landscape is flush with inspired content. With swathes of entertainment mediums to be heralded, one genre stands out in terms of variety. Japanese horror is unlike any other horror genre in the world of cinema. Many movies pose surrealist concepts and existential crises, offering distinctive experiences for all audiences. Though Japanese cinema has proved to be a standout among all other forms of media, it's no surprise that a variety of American films host inspiration from such otherworldly tales.

American horror can be somewhat flavorless in some regards. These days, there is a formula that works at the box office, and producers will typically lean towards tried and true narratives to ensure maximum profit. Whether it is a slasher, otherworldly horror or a plain over-the-top monster, stateside horror rarely leaves room for interpretation. WIth that being said, there are a number of American films that have borrowed or even re-imagined Japanese concepts.

When the legendary movie critic Roger Ebert raves about a film, it is typically a good quality indicator, and the esteemed, late journalist did so with Sam Raimi's 1998 thriller A Simple Plan. A wise man once said the best way to keep a secret between three people is if two are dead. The age-old adage has never been more appropriate than in this overlooked gem. Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, and Bridget Fonda star as salt-of-the-earth midwestern folks whose lives are turned upside down by a single fortunate event followed by a series of much more unfortunate ones. Greedy People is a dark comedy crime mystery film directed by Potsy Ponciroli from a screenplay by Michael Vukadinovich. The 2024 film is set in a small town and follows two cops as they try to investigate a murder scene where they find a large sum of money and decide to keep it, but their peaceful lives get filled with chaos because of their one bad decision. Greedy People stars Himesh Patel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead roles with Lily James, Traci Lords, Joey Lauren Adams, and Simon Rex starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the dark comedy, moral ambiguity, and absurd characters in Greedy People here are some similar movies you should check out next.

Fargo Credit – MGM

Fargo is a dark comedy crime thriller film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The 1996 film follows Jerry, a down-and-out sales manager in a lot of debt to some dangerous people.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the directors of this weekend’s dinosaur thriller 65, and the film’s producer Sam Raimi recently sat down to answer fan questions during a Reddit Ama session, and some interesting information came out of that series of Qs and As. For example, Beck and Woods revealed that a sequel to their 2019 slasher Haunt is in the works, and Raimi mentioned that members of his Ghost House Pictures production team are trying to come up with a story for a sequel to his 2009 film Drag Me to Hell. This one delivers the 4K ‘experience’ — and David Lynch’s mesmerizing visuals and Angelo Badalamenti’s seductive music once again pull us into a different dimension. Four or five viewings down the line, the ‘storyline’ of this TV show-become-feature film is if anything less understandable. But it’s no less pleasantly weird — we can’t keep our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. My ‘quality’ section debates a question I’m getting more often: are 4K discs worth the upgrade?

Actor Brent Briscoe, whose work included the David Lynch series “Twin Peaks” and Lynch’s 2001 film “Mulholland Drive,” died Wednesday morning, his representative told TheWrap on Friday. He was 56. Briscoe died following a short hospital stay following a serious fall that resulted in internal bleeding and eventually heart complications. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death. “We lost a class act on Wednesday. Brent played hundreds of roles throughout his career but his greatest role was to his family and friends. He was as genuine as they come. We will miss him dearly,” his.

Brent Briscoe, the busy character actor who appeared alongside Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade and A Simple Plan and played Det. Dave Macklay on the recently revived Twin Peaks, has died. He was 56.

Briscoe died Wednesday in Los Angeles, a friend announced on Facebook. No cause of death was immediately available.

Briscoe also had a recurring role as the diner owner J.J. on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation and played Sheriff Cecil Coleman in Frank Darabont's The Majestic (2001).

“Damn good” only begins to describe Part 11 of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” an episode in which a lot of pieces came together both for the series’ central mystery and within its hero’s restricted mind.

First, let’s address what’s in the box. For all the parodies and homages that reference David Fincher’s iconic scene in “Seven,” this one may take the cake– well, the pie. The long drive into the desert. The long row of telephone lines on the side of the road. A mysterious box. An unarmed man held at gunpoint. These are the same images that evoked trepidation in Fincher’s film, but Lynch created a playful tone for “Twin Peaks.”

Showtime revealed the full cast list for its upcoming "Twin Peaks" revival, and it's nothing short of insane -- and insanely long.

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.

The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.

It’s so hard to tell nowadays what kind of film you are going to get by just looking at the solitary picture and the synopsis. I seldom ever rely on the number of stars that it has, because someone else’s trash just might be my treasure. Back in the video store days, there were absolutely no guarantees even by looking at the videocassette box, but I guess that I just had a false sense of security that I could make a more informed choice. I’m slowly letting go, and just going with straight up intuition.

Arriving decently dressed but in poor taste is writer/producer Ben Ketai’s directorial debut, Beneath, sharing its bland title with Larry Fessenden’s most recent indie horror film. This genre exploitation effort, which may eventually make a great double bill with Patricia Riggen’s forthcoming reenactment of the plight of the 33 Chilean miners from the 2010 Copiapo mining accident, often feels like a cheap knockoff of Neil Marshall’s The Descent, though Ketai’s adherence to the poker faced formula of And Then There Were None should satisfy those appreciative of commitment to ambience, no matter how generic the end product.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to jump on the phone for a one on one interview with director Ben Ketai. He talked about what he loved about the script, the challenges of shooting in such a confined space, creating a sense of claustrophobia, how the project changed along the way, and more. The line-up for this year's Film4 FrightFest in London has just been announced – and boy, is it a doozy! Sporting a record-breaking 38 UK/European premieres and 11 world premieres, this August is going to be an exciting time in the genre calendar.

This year Film4 FrightFest will be moving from its previous home at Leicester Square's Empire Cinema to the nearby Vue Cinema (also on Leicester Square), prompting an ingenious reshuffle of the screening arrangements.

All main screen films will be presented at different times across three different screens, with two extra screens reserved for single-slot screenings of the various films hitting this year's Discovery Screens.

Inspired by actual events: at a coal mine in a blue-collar town it's the last day of work for veteran miner George Marsh (Jeff Fahey). His daughter Samantha (Kelly Noonan), a feisty environmental lawyer whose politics are bitterly opposed by her father, celebrates the occasion by accompanying him underground. She's escorted by old flame Randy Bennings (Joey Kern); no sooner do they descend to the coal face, however, than a drilling machine malfunctions and punches through a supporting wall.

IFC Midnight announced a June 13 VOD release for Alex de la Iglesia’s horror comedy Witching & Bitching. Witching's ensemble cast boasts some of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, such as Mario Casas (I Want You), Hugo Silva (Sex, Parties and Lies), and Carmen Maura, who earned a Best Actress award at San Sebastian in 2000 for her role in Commonwealth. Further cast members are Terele Pavez, Carolina Bang, Secun de la Rosa, Pepon Nieto, and Jaime Ordonez.

The flick centers on a band of thieves trying to flee to France after purloining 25,000 gold rings from a Spanish city. A curse is placed on them, and they fall into the clutches of the witches of the Navarrese town of Zugarramurdi.

Oh, it would be nice to have a ticket to Los Angeles. Screamfest La continues draw in some of the most interesting horror titles, for its 2013 festival run. This time, Screamfest will utilize Ben Ketai's (30 Days of Night: Dark Days) thrilling title Beneath to launch the festival October 8th, 2013. Beneath will have its World Premiere on this date. As well, the film stars Mark L. Young (We're the Millers), Jeff Fahey (Planet Terror), Joey Kern (Cabin Fever), Brent Briscoe and Kelly Noonan; a the first teaser trailer for the film has been revealed! The clip begins normal enough, with coal miners descending below ground. But, events get tricky when the miners become trapped 600 feet down. Is there something down there with them? We've been provided with the first teaser trailer, poster, and a few images from director Ben Ketai's horror film Beneath.  Coal mines are scary enough places when everything's going right, but the terror level jumps up a few notches after a collapse traps the crew 600 feet underground; it's only a matter of time before they turn on each other in a desperate bid to survive.  This teaser leaves out the dialogue, opting instead to let the music and camerawork take viewers down into the depths of the mine and follow along on the inevitable descent into madness.  It proved an effective decision, as Beneath has been chosen to be the opening film of Screamfest, starting October 8th. Beneath, directed by Ben Ketai, is poised to make its Screamfest debut in Los Angeles next month and the first batch of photos have been released.  You can find them inside.  Ketai previously helmed 30 Days of Night: Dark Days and he had a short film play to Screamfest audiences a few years back.

His film for Revolver Pictures Company stars Jeff Fahey, Kelly Noonan and Joey Kern.
