Francis Ford Coppola was celebrated Saturday night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles as he received the 50th AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest recognition from the American Film Institute. The evening brought together many of Hollywood’s most respected names, including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Harrison Ford, Adam Driver, Morgan Freeman, and Spike Lee.
Spielberg and Lucas, who share decades-long friendships with Coppola, presented the award. Spielberg, recalling their first meeting in 1967, praised Coppola’s openness and creative fearlessness. “On one hand, you are a warrior for independent artists,” Spielberg said. “But also, and always, you’re fearless in how open you are to ideas, opinions and inspiration.” He described watching an early five-hour cut of Apocalypse Now with other filmmakers, highlighting Coppola’s willingness to invite feedback and collaborate in the creative process.

Francis Ford Coppola is about to trade in his Razzie Award for an AFI Life Achievement Award.
The five-time Oscar winner has been named the 50th recipient of the American Film Institute's most prestigious honor. It couldn't come at a better time. Earlier this year, the 86-year-old filmmaker "won" the Worst Director Razzie for directing Megalopolis, his big-screen gamble that failed to connect with audiences.
Coppola's directing buddies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg will present the trophy on April 26. The televised special, titled The 50th AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Francis Ford Coppola, will air on TNT with an encore on TCM at a later date.
The swanky tribute will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with other A-list guests and presenters including Gia Coppola, Roman Coppola, Robert De Niro, Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, Dustin Hoffman, Ron Howard, C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, Spike Lee,...

As previously announced, Francis Ford Coppola is finally receiving the coveted AFI Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Now, it’s revealed that fellow directors George Lucas, who co-founded American Zoetrope with Coppola, and Steven Spielberg will present the award to the auteur during the 50th AFI Life Achievement ceremony.
“There is only one Francis Ford Coppola,” Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, said. “And it is AFI’s honor to gather the art and entertainment communities, along with his family, friends and colleagues to celebrate cinema — all of it — and the very best of it.”
Coppola has famously pushed the boundaries of cinema, most recently with his self-funded epic “Megalopolis.” When he won the Worst Director title from the Razzie Awards, Coppola brilliantly wrote on Instagram that he chooses to “not follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the...

Gia Coppola’s drama starring Pamela Anderson peers behind the glamour of ‘the fun capital of the world’, but sin city has long seduced film-makers from Scorsese and Soderbergh to Sean Baker and Baz Luhrmann
(There’s a reason why film-makers are routinely drawn to the glaring, garish lights of Las Vegas: in its spangliest strips, it feels more movie set than city, the kind of place it’s hard to imagine people living everyday lives 24/7. Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl – streaming on Mubi from 18 April – is quite rare in its focus on one such person: Shelly, a dancer in a long-running revue on the Vegas strip, now pushing 60 and at a crossroads when said revue announces its imminent closure. Short and light on plot, it’s a character study built on a poignant night-and-day contrast, as Shelly literally performs a glitzy Vegas dream that all looks a bit...

In a surprising move, the partners at Slate PR — one of Hollywood’s highest-profile publicity firms that represents a long list of A-list stars, creators, talent and events — are dissolving the company.
The development was confirmed Thursday morning in a brief statement sharing that after 15 years together, the partners Stephen Huvane, Simon Halls, Robin Baum, Ina Treciokas and Andy Gelb have all “decided to move forward on separate paths.” The statement added that Treciokas will soon announce her next venture while the others, Huvane, Halls, Baum and Gelb, will “do the same.”
“The partners depart with mutual respect and appreciation for their joint accomplishments at Slate PR,” per a statement received by The Hollywood Reporter. “The partners sincerely thank their clients, colleagues and industry peers for their support throughout the years. They remain committed to providing thoughtful and strategic communications guidance in their new ventures.”

“Sinners” is about to take a bite out of the spring film calendar in 2025.
Ryan Coogler’s ambitious big swing “Sinners” marks the “Black Panther” director’s first original project, out from under the weight of I.P., since his 2013 Sundance sensation “Fruitvale Station” put him on the map. The 38-year-old mega talent has had an impressive run directing both “Black Panther” movies along with the Rocky spinoff “Creed” (2015), while also producing that film’s two sequels — all major box office coups. But he wrote the Warner Bros. supernatural horror epic “Sinners,” out April 18, from his own idea, and first reactions are already praising a vision that welds classic vampire mythology to the metastasizing racism underlying the mid-century American South.
“Black Panther” and “Creed” star Michael B. Jordan plays dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, each representing their own side of a coin of good and corrupt. They...

For anyone who grew up watching movies in the 1980s, Val Kilmer, who died Tuesday, was something of an anomaly among the young Hollywood actors whose careers blew up during that decade.
Compared to Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Emilio Estevez, Robert Downey Jr., John Cusack or Tom Hanks, to name a handful of stars who emerged back then, Kilmer was not exactly a strapping action hero nor a smooth heartbreak kid. Nor did he come across as a brooding Method-style thespian, or as someone who could provide instant comic relief onscreen.
In some ways, Kilmer was all of these things at once, and therefore unclassifiable. He was mostly a great character actor with the looks of a leading man, capable of melting into roles that almost invariably had an edge to them.

People often describe the experience of working alongside a group of close-knit collaborators on a film or television show as being like a family. There’s no better way to say it for Billie Lourd regarding her newest credit on Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern.
The comedy reunites the veteran star with her Scream Queens, American Horror Story and American Horror Stories boss Ryan Murphy, who serves as an executive producer of the Max Mutchnick and David Kohan-created series. The latter two TV titans also have a tight connection with Lourd after finding a sweet spot for her on their Will & Grace reboot, playing Fiona, the granddaughter of a character played by her late grandmother, Debbie Reynolds. The legendary actress was a regular on the NBC sitcom as the mother of Debra Messing’s Grace Adler.
But in perhaps the sweetest familial connection, Lourd is the goddaughter of power publicist Simon Halls,...

Pamela Anderson, who was back on screen and all over the awards circuit last year with Gia Coppola’s film The Last Showgirl, said today that “vanity is a prison” as she accepted a Muse Award at New York Women in Film & Television’s 45th annual luncheon ceremony, in her now signature no-makeup look.
The Canadian-born actress opened her remarks with nod to “universal, free and fair healthcare” after noting that her father had just undergone cancer surgery. It went “smoothly and he had all the aftercare he needed,” said Anderson, who has dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship. She mentioned it because her appearance at the event, at Cipriani midtown, had been touch and go given his situation. She thanked “a blessed and generous Canadian health care system.”
She left it there. (U.S.-Canada relations are at a low due to Trump administration tariffs.)

The feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Jennifer Lopez and directed by Bill Condon, earned raves at this year's Sundance Film Festival, but word on the sale of the film has been pretty quiet since the festivities wrapped up...until now. With the film having huge awards season potential, a studio has now entered the chat to give the movie a domestic distribution deal that will allow the film to have the full theatrical experience.

Mubi has unveiled its lineup for next month’s streaming offerings, including the trio of Hong Sangsoo’s Isabelle Huppert collaborations, notably their latest A Traveler’s Needs. Also among the lineup is Miguel Gomes’ Grand Tour following its theatrical release next week and a film we’ve been hoping would find distribution after its Sundance premiere last year, Haley Elizabeth Anderson’s debut Tendaberry.
Jordan Raup said in his Sundance review of Tendaberry, “A soulful coming-of-age story with far more on its mind than the here and now, Haley Elizabeth Anderson’s Tendaberry is an ambitious directorial debut mixing various storytelling forms to achieve its poetic patchwork of ideas. Film is so back. Shooting on Kodak film continues to be both a more popular choice among filmmakers and to gather more Oscar prestige. At this year’s Academy Awards Sean Baker’s Best Picture winner, “Anora,” was shot on 35mm by cinematographer Drew Daniels; Brady Corbet’s Best Cinematography winner, “The Brutalist,” was shot on 35mm VistaVision to great aplomb by Dp Lol Crawley; Walter Salles’ Best International Feature Film winner, “I’m Still Here,” was shot on both 35mm and S8mm by cinematographer Adrian Teijido; and the Best Live Action Short winner, “I’m Not a Robot,” was also shot on 35mm.
This year looks set to build on that success. There will be a cohort of prominent movies captured on film from some of the usual analog-loving directors: Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,...

The former Baywatch star’s turn as a veteran Vegas dancer single-handedly rewrites her career in Gia Coppola’s bruising and beautiful film
A life spent in the service of dreams and fantasy collides with unforgiving reality: Pamela Anderson’s veteran Vegas showgirl Shelly is forced to face a future that no longer has need of her 1,000-watt smile and glitter-smeared decolletage. The third feature from Palo Alto-director Gia Coppola, The Last Showgirl is a wisp of a thing, clocking in at under 90 minutes and shot in just 18 days. The film’s structure, more a series of vignettes than a linear narrative, feels like the fleeting reflections of a life captured in the facets of a mirror ball. It’s initially tempting to dismiss the picture, like its central character with her breathy, little-girl voice, as superficial. But there’s a bruising cumulative power to this melancholy little paean to an ending era.

Chris Hewitt, James Dyer, Alex Godfrey, and Helen O'Hara take a moment to discuss these monumental losses in this week's episode, but will convene to pay more in-depth tribute to Hackman in particular on next week's podcast, as news of his passing broke so quickly and unexpectedly on Thursday morning.
On with the show, and we have a brace of brilliant guests for your pod listening pleasure. First up, Pamela Anderson, star of Baywatch and Barb Wire, sits down with Alex Godfrey to tell him about...

Pamela Anderson delivers the performance of her career in Gia Coppola’s drama. Here’s our The Last Showgirl review.
Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl would make an excellent double-bill with Coralie Fargeat’s 2024 sensation The Substance. Granted, you won’t see Pamela Anderson birth a younger version of herself in Coppola’s film, but The Last Showgirl might leave you pondering about aging as a woman and how showbusiness only values youth and beauty.
Anderson plays Shelly, a 57-year-old showgirl who has performed at the same revue show in Las Vegas for the last three decades. All good things must come to an end and so does Shelly’s show, but this is the only life and work she has ever known. Las Vegas isn’t friendly to women of a certain age as it is and Shelly becomes increasingly worried about her future.

Filmmakers celebrated shooting celluloid at the 7th Kodak Film Awards, where respected veteran Dp Ed Lachman – who won the American Society of Cinematographers top honor last weekend for “Maria” – was feted with a Career Achievement Award.
“It’s a lifetime of exploring, knowing it’s in the journey and not in the final destination,” the Oscar-nominated Dp of films including “Maria,” “Carol,” Far from Heaven” and “El Conde” said of cinematography. “There isn’t only one way to create images to tell our stories. The challenges of cinematography, for me, has always been revealing or trying to evoke the psychological authenticity of the image in the story. Images are about discovering with your camera the emotional immediacy of the moment, which you can translate and share in the documentary and narrative form which we’ve seen in everyone’s work here tonight, and maybe even to express some injustices that there are in the world.

Anderson’s depiction of an older performer’s struggles, as youth slips away and family fractures, rivals Demi Moore’s in The Substance
Warm and generous performances carry this good-natured movie from director Gia Coppola; it’s actually the sort of approachable, actor-led drama for grownups that pundits complain Hollywood doesn’t produce any more. Pamela Anderson stars as Shelly, a middle-aged Las Vegas showgirl and 30-year veteran of a cheesy spectacle called Le Razzle Dazzle, gamely putting on the feathers and the sparkly rhinestones and revealing costumes alongside dancers in their teens – all for dwindling audiences who are looking for novelties and more overtly sexualised shows elsewhere.
Shelly is stunned to learn that the show is getting canned and must now figure out what to do with her life and how to repair relations with her grownup daughter Hannah (Billie Lourd), who always felt she came second in her...

Few celebrities have been as denigrated throughout their career as Pamela Anderson — and so a sober, wistful character study would seem the perfect vehicle for her to prove her acting chops. The former Baywatch star gives a quite literally glittering comeback performance in Gia Coppola’s latest, The Last Showgirl, a dreamy, understated ode to the underdogs of Las Vegas. After Mainstream and Palo Alto, Coppola jettisons her usual wryly humorous tone in favour of a more pensive mood. But the drama falls slightly short of being the heavy hitter it hopes to be.
Bedecked in feathers and rhinestones, Anderson embodies a livewire energy as Shelly, a Las Vegas Strip dancer who we first see lying about her age in an audition. Cut to roughly a week before, and Shelly is informed by her sweet-natured producer Eddie (Dave Bautista) that Le Razzle Dazzle, the show Shelly has been the face of for 38 years,...

This 88-minute film shows us what it could achieve with brilliant stars and an impressive story, yet it leaves little behind—just a crack in the wall where the whole wall needed to be torn apart. Gia Coppola’s latest feature, The Last Showgirl (2024) follows a legendary showgirl in LA who, after more than 30 years of experience, finds herself defending her career, her reputation, her life, and, most of all, herself.
Pamela Anderson plays the protagonist, Shelly Gardner, a 57-year-old showgirl who has worked at Le Razzle Dazzle for over three decades. The platform is the last of its kind— a French-style revue at a casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip. Shelly is vulnerable yet kind to everyone around her in the beginning. One day, she receives heart-breaking news from her producer that her show is coming to an end. She has only a few more weeks left on...

We have suggestions if you’re looking for an awards contender to watch on subscription streaming or on-demand video this weekend. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that just hit streaming; another Oscar-nominated new release on VOD; a movie that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar but picked up other nominations and wins; a potential future contender now on VOD; and a streaming recommendation that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.
Top pick: Nosferatu
After a successful theatrical run where it became one of Focus Features’ highest-grossing movies ever, director Robert Eggers’ gothic horror remake has crossed the ocean in a dirt-filled coffin and come to rest on Peacock. The beautifully made film has been nominated for four Academy Awards in craft categories: Best Cinematography (Jarin Blaschke), Best Costume Design (Linda Muir), Best Production Design (Craig Lathrop), and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Brutalist (Brady Corbet)
Brady Corbet’s long-gestating architecture epic looks and feels as painstakingly crafted as its lead character’s intricate architectonics. For as barren and minimalist as László Tóth’s (a terrific Adrien Brody) designs are, they pack a beautiful, mysterious, occasionally revelatory punch, much like Corbet’s winding three-and-a-half-hour (complete with built-in intermission!) story about a Hungarian architect who immigrated to New York after WWII only to be mentally and emotionally sucked in by the tide of a momentous decades-long project initiated by a ruthless Pennsylvania business tycoon. Its scope is enormous––almost impossible not to get wrapped up in. A sense of impending gravity gives this film the weight of the real, as if we’re witnessing history.

Directed by Gia Coppola and starring Pamela Anderson, The Last Showgirl is a nostalgic drama about the fading away of showgirl culture from the Vegas night scene. Women adorned in feathers and rhinestones used to be one of the biggest attractions of Vegas. American showgirls took pride in celebrating the age-old tradition of burlesque, but as of recent times, the demand for such shows has declined. The erotic has taken over extravagance, and the film pays tribute to the relentless dedication of performers who truly believe in the greatness of traditional showgirl productions. Shelly Gardner had dedicated thirty years of her life to the art of showgirl. She enjoyed the glamour, the costumes, the elegance, and the power she felt onstage, and she never thought there would come a day when her production company, “Razzle Dazzle,” would shut down. She was in her early twenties when she joined the production...

Even a Hollywood dynasty gets tired of rewatching their iconic films.
“The Last Showgirl” director Gia Coppola, whose grandfather is iconic auteur Francis Ford Coppola, said during Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that she had to eventually watch “The Godfather” with one of her pals since no one in her family was willing to revisit it with her.
Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, spurred two sequels, concluding with 1990’s “The Godfather: Part III.” Yet it took Gia Coppola a few decades to even get to see the first feature.
“I haven’t seen ‘Godfather’ until much later in my life because there was like a lot of pressure and intimidation,” Gia Coppola said, “but also all my family had sort of been a part of it and seen it, so no one really wanted to re watch that with me.

Two years ago, Brenda Song found herself in a professional stalemate. She’d been acting steadily since age 6 — her first big break was on the Disney Channel show The Suite Life of Zack & Cody — and though she’d successfully pivoted into more mature roles (like the Hulu series Dollface), something didn’t feel right.
After having two children back-to-back, she felt lost trying to find her place as a working mom and, for the first time, was considering a life outside of Hollywood. “I felt like the universe was constantly telling me to just go be a mom,” she says. “I said to my partner [Macaulay Culkin], ‘If the best years are behind me, I’m Ok with that because I’ve had these amazing adventures.’ And he was like, ‘Are you crazy?’ “

The zany conspiracy comedy Operation Taco Gary’s is set to launch at the European Film Market this year, according to Deadline. The film rights to the comedy has recently been acquired by Archstone Entertainment and the company will be taking it to the EFM to find international distributors. Per Deadline, “The story follows conspiracy theorist Danny (Rex) and his skeptical brother Luke (Milligan) as they set out on a cross-country road trip and uncover a global plot that leads them to unassuming fast food chain Taco Gary’s — only to discover it’s the secret base of operations for an alien race intent on taking over the planet.

The year 2024 was an eventful one for the Coppola family. While the patriarch, Francis Ford Coppola, spent millions of his personal money on his passion-project Megalopolis, his nephews, Jason Schwartzman and Nicolas Cage, delivered memorable supporting performances in the films Queer and Longlegs. But that's not all; Gia Coppola, the only daughter of the late Gian-Carlo Coppola, released her third feature film, The Last Showgirl, to considerable acclaim. This weekend, the drama passed a new domestic box office milestone, even as its star, Pamela Anderson, was overlooked by the Academy.

This isn’t the way things were supposed to go for Pamela Anderson. As the 2020s dawned, she could reflect on a noteworthy career, from Playboy Playmate of the Month in February 1990 to playing Lisa the Tool Time Girl on Home Improvement to playing pin-up C.J. Parker on 110 episodes of Baywatch from 1992 to 1997 to starring in the Cannes-premiering feature Barb Wire (1996) to having another long series run as the head of an elite bodyguard agency on V.I.P. from 1998 to 2002. That’s all besides being a tabloid queen during her tumultuous 1990s marriage to Mötley Crüe cofounder Tommy Lee.
Anderson recognized she had done pretty well for someone who grew up in a small town on Vancouver Island. But at the same time, she felt unfulfilled.
“I came home a couple of years ago thinking, ‘Oh well, I guess I created this cartoon character, and there’s just no way out...
