The sitcom has been around since the earliest days of television, when Lucille Ball, Dick Van Dyke, and Mary Tyler Moore ruled the airwaves. In 2015, there's countless more channels that existed in those days, but even with an endless amount of content to watch at any given moment, many viewers always find themselves drawn back to one particular modern classic: "The Office."
"The Office" originated in the UK, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring the former as the insensitive Gm of a paper company. The mockumentary sitcom was adapted for American audiences on NBC in 2005, swapping out Gervais for Steve Carell, then known for his work on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." The show also boasted a supporting cast including future Hollywood icons like John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Mindy Kaling.

The Office, the iconic comedy series starring Steve Carell, John Krasinski, and Rainn Wilson, just turned 20 years old on March 24, 2025. The legacy of one of NBC's best sitcoms ever is indisputable today, but two decades ago, almost no one thought the same. In fact, not many people during the production of Season 1 even thought it would even air. Nevertheless, after one of its key episodes, the writers and creators of the show were able to see that they had a hit on their hands. That episode? Well, none other than the classic "Diversity Day," of course.
In a new oral history published by The Hollywood Reporter, the creators of The Office recalled their experience making Season 1 of what was actually a pretty experimental idea at the time. A mockumentary sitcom with an obnoxious and relatively unknown lead? While it could have been a recipe for disaster, the show actually...

Part of what made the original British version of "The Office" and the early seasons of its American counterpart so engaging was that they both felt so tactile and believable. Sure, the later seasons of the U.S. version of "The Office" weren't its best, but initially, the characters and their interactions felt real, the drudgery of their office work felt real, and that very office itself felt real. No doubt helped by the well-executed mockumentary format and use of mostly unknown actors, this element of realism was part of what made the show as enduringly beloved as it became — everybody, at one time, had a boss like Michael Scott, and everybody had endured the beige, fluorescent hellscape that was the modern office.
It's a testament to the production team's talents on the U.S. "Office" (which Ricky Gervais wasn't involved with) that most of the series was shot on a set.

On paper, renewing "Common Side Effects" for a second season is a no-brainer. The Adult Swim series, which is about two former high school lab partners named Marshall and Frances who discover a magical mushroom with healing properties that can cure just about everything and must face-off against big pharma, international businessmen, and the United States federal Drug Enforcement Administration, was created by Joe Bennett (the incredible "Scavengers Reign") and Steve Hely ("Veep"), and features Mike Judge and Greg Daniels ("King of the Hill") as executive producers. With a roster of above-the-line talent boasting such an impressive resume, the name value alone in any other era would justify at least three seasons without a second thought.

At this point, The Office is easily considered one of the most beloved series of recent years. But that doesn't mean that every character that was part of the Dunder Mifflin family was loved by everyone. During a participation on the podcast Good Hang, hosted by Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), former The Office star Rashida Jones (Sunny) talked about her one-season stint on the hit series and revealed that there was a simple reason why she was eventually let go from the show.
Jones stated that the decision not to keep her character Karen Filipelli in the story "made sense." As Poehler pointed out, it was a difficult character to play. Karen is introduced in Season 3, after Jim (John Krasinski) asks to be transferred to a different branch because he thinks things won't work out with Pam (Jenna Fischer) and believes it's best to stay away. For fans of King of the Hill, Monsignor Martinez is about as cool as you can get. Seen regularly on the television of the Hill family, Monsignor Martinez is a fictional priest who always seems to be wrapped up in melodramatic life-and-death adventures in the telenovela named after him. In King of the Hill, the ridiculous clips of Monsignor Martinez are always good for a quick laugh, but if the television gods had complied, we could have gotten a lot more of him.

Rashida Jones knows that “The Office” shipped Jim and Pam before “shipping” was even a thing — and she’s made peace with the fact that many viewers hated her character for coming in between them.
“I was the third point in the triangle, it’s fine, I accept it,” she said in a Tuesday episode of Amy Poehler’s new podcast, “Good Hang.”
Jones co-starred on “The Office” after being introduced in Season 3 as Karen Filippelli, a new co-worker for Jim (John Krasinski), who at the top of the season had just accepted a job at a different branch of Dunder Mifflin — in part to remove himself from Pam (Jenna Fischer), who was engaged when they shared a kiss at the end of Season 2. Karen becomes a love interest for Jim, ultimately creating a love triangle that many fans decidedly wanted to be an A-b relationship between the main characters.

Isn’t it hoot how a show about the most unassuming of jobs—a paper company, no less—could become a touchstone of popular culture? As we sit here pondering its profound impact, we can’t help but recall Jim Halpert’s poignant line in The Office: “Everything I have I owe to this job—this stupid, wonderful, boring, amazing job.”
Ah, the irony! That’s the sweet spot that makes this NBC classic more than just a comedy—it’s a masterclass in paradox. It captured the beauty of life’s dullest routines, where we see ourselves reflected in the quirky, often maddening characters who spend their days at Dunder Mifflin or Wernham Hogg.

The American version of The Office is now 20 years old. Some of the talents involved with the hit series took some time to reflect on bringing it to life two decades ago with its earlier episodes, divulging how three of the show's writers wound up pulling double duty as on-screen actors.

It was planned from the start for Novak to work as both a writer and an actor, and that resulted in him playing Ryan beginning with the very first episode. Twenty years ago, NBC premiered a new sitcom based on a hit U.K. series. The Office debuted on March 24, 2005, and was not an immediate hit in its initial six-episode run. The show struggled to find its footing out of the block, with several episodes virtually xeroxed from the storylines of its British predecessor created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and transplanted, often clunkily, to Scranton, Pa. But soon enough showrunner Greg Daniels found his groove and leaned into the strengths of his formidable ensemble, led by Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson.
The Office would go on to become a must-see TV staple, running nine seasons and earning five Emmys in 42 nominations — and then becoming a hit all over again as a new generation rediscovered and binged The Office when it hit streaming. Until 2023, The Office held the record as most-streamed series, with more than 57 billion minutes watched.

In the annals of TV romances, the one between Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) on the U.S. remake of "The Office" looms particularly large, especially among 21st-century examples. Jim and Pam's courtship was, of course, far from the first will-they-won't-they romance featured in a TV comedy. Still, in the modern era, their gradual evolution from being co-workers at the boring Dunder-Mifflin paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania to becoming married with kids and living happily ever after is quite special.
Indeed, while it's arguable that the show, as a whole, was past its prime by the time "The Office" ended after nine seasons, the Jim and Pam relationship itself remains a high point of the series. It's also set a bar that other TV shows have had to clear when it comes to establishing a believable possible romance (one that causes viewers to swoon and root...

On March 24, 2005, NBC aired the first episode of The Office, an American remake of the universally acclaimed, Golden Globe-winning BBC comedy of the same name. The premiere, a mockumentary that introduced the staff of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania, pulled in a decent-sized audience that night. It drew 11.2 million viewers following an episode of The Apprentice — but even with that start, expectations for the show were not high.
NBC had produced a pilot for The Office, written by King of the Hill co-creator Greg Daniels, in early 2004, just after Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC show won the Golden Globe for best comedy and Gervais took home the award for best actor in a comedy. The network ordered the show to series that spring but picked up only five more episodes. After premiering on a Thursday, the remaining episodes ran on Tuesday nights, where it struggled.

The Office debuted on NBC 20 years ago on March 24th, 2005, and American television hasn’t been the same ever since. While it may have been inspired by the British version from creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office has certainly made its mark as it continues to entertain viewers decades after it premiered. But what was the experience like behind the scenes? Former star Craig Robinson got candid about his audition story with TV Insider in-studio as he reflected on his process. NBC / Peacock “I got the audition through my agent manager and… there were like 12 people in the room and Greg Daniels, who adapted The Office for American television,” Robinson recalls, painting a picture of the day. “He was at the head, of the group,” Robinson adds, “And at the time I had a video out with Jerry Minor and this video was called ‘Somebody’s F***ing...

More than a decade later, the American remake of "The Office" endures thanks to its popularity on streaming services, the vast amount of memes and GIFs from the show you can find, and the upcoming spin-off about a Midwestern newspaper set in the world of the show and featuring (at least) Oscar Nunez as his character from Dunder-Mifflin Scranton. Add to that the "Office Ladies" podcast, hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, and the idea of people within the show having preferred episodes makes a lot of sense. Although some people can debate the quality of the show's final two seasons, it's at least safe to say that when Steve Carell departed near the end of its seventh season to pursue his film career and leave the star-making role of Michael Scott behind, the show changed quite a lot.

This week marks the 20th anniversary of The Office, the groundbreaking NBC sitcom that redefined workplace comedy and launched the careers of several cast members. Resident Alien has been a delight since its premiere in 2021, seamlessly blending situational comedy with sci-fi world-building and a quirky imagination. Season 3, perhaps its best yet, premiered more than one year ago, and fans are eagerly awaiting Season 4 as the show heads to the USA Network.
There's a kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition laced throughout that show, and it constantly reminds me of possibly my favorite sci-fi comedy on television, a very similar (and arguably even better) series from 2016 that aired on TBS. It developed a small but loyal cult following in Season 2 after word-of-mouth spread, and was renewed for Season 3. Until it wasn't.

In April of 2008, writer and producer Michael Schur added a new title to his resumé after getting his start on "Saturday Night Live" and, of course, Greg Daniels' American remake of "The Office". Before "The Office" ended in 2013, Schur was pulled away to work on a show that was initially intended to be a spin-off of the mockumentary set at a Pennsylvania paper company ... a little show called "Parks and Recreation."
Wait, so was "Parks and Recreation" really originally intended to just be a spin-off of "The Office?" The answer to that, amazingly, is yes. According to an archived version of an article in New York Magazine from 2009, the year that "Parks and Recreation" premiered, when Ben Silverman took a role as the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, the executive asked Daniels and Schur to create a spin-off of the massively popular series. As it happens, though, Schur and Daniels ended...

Brian Baumgartner was a beloved part of NBC's The Office, portraying the fan-favorite character of Kevin Malone. Despite the character remaining popular with fans a decade after the show's conclusion, Baumgartner isn't sure if Kevin will appear in the forthcoming spinoff series.
Speaking with Screen Rant to discuss his recent appearance on Suits LA, in which he wanted lawyer Erica Rollins to "kill Kevin Malone," Baumgartner addressed a possible return to The Office universe for the spinoffnow that it's been confirmed that his former co-star Oscar Nunez will be back as Oscar Martínez. "Uh, That's interesting... I don't know what the rules are there in the new show, or where Greg [Daniels] sees Kevin," the actor stated. "I hope Kevin's still working at the bar right around the corner from Dunder Mifflin. I hope he's still there, so I don't know about a trip to the Midwest, or who...

When the U.S. version of The Office premiered on NBC 20 years ago, the reaction was rather muted, to put it charitably. The shadow of the original U.K. series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant loomed very large, and the NBC pilot was almost a shot-for-shot remake of their first episode, with Steve Carell taking over the lead role from Gervais. “The insurmountable problem for this version may prove to be Carell himself,” wrote USA Today. “He’s an amusing sketch comic, but he comes across as an actor doing a bit,...

Did The Office team go extreme lengths to ensure Jim and Pam’s first kiss was proper? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Greg Daniels and director Ken Kwapis weren’t taking any chances. They wanted the moment to feel raw, unfiltered, and entirely in the moment. So, after blocking the scene, Fischer was sent straight to her trailer with strict instructions, as she recalled in one Office Ladies podcast: “Don’t leave until you’re called. Don’t speak to John. And just be alone.” Meanwhile, Krasinski had no idea what was happening. The two never rehearsed the kiss together, adding another layer of unpredictability.
The buildup to this moment was intense. Jim and Pam had spent two full seasons in a will-they-won’t-they dynamic, and this scene was their turning point. The tension was real, both on and off the screen. Fischer later revealed on her Office Ladies podcast that the...

The Office remains one of the most successful shows in TV history. The series ran for nine seasons, started careers for actors like Steve Carell and John Krasinski, and popularized the mockumentary style of sitcoms. It even achieved a record for most streamed minutes in a year in 2020 with viewers watching for 57.1 billion minutes, only to be toppled by Suits three years later.
It came as no surprise then when Peacock, where the series currently resides, announced a sequel to The Office. The upcoming show, titled The Paper, won't exactly be a direct sequel, moving away from the paper-selling offices of Dunder Mifflin with brand-new characters. However, there are plenty of reasons for fans to be excited, with beloved The Office characters returning and The Paper retaining the humor that made the original series so memorable.

Fans of The Officehave always thought that Toby Flenderson, Dunder Mifflin's Human Resources Representative, is a middle-aged man. Toby's mannerisms, way of life, and fashion suggest he was an older man at the beginning of the series. Obviously, he is not as aged as Creed or Stanley, but he is not in the prime of his life either. However, a new development in Peacock's SuperFan episodes of The Office tells a whole different story and confirms that Toby was at least 10 years younger than people thought him to be.
SuperFan episodes are a special streaming version of The Office available on Peacock. They include all the deleted scenes that didn't make it into the original series. While many of these scenes have been available on the internet for many years, the Peacock editing makes them canon and has allowed many fans to watch them in the context of the show.

It's a dangerous thing, being a Millennial: you never know when the capitalistic lords-that-be will throw a bit of nostalgia-laden commerce at you, begging you to buy into a shopping-induced moment of bliss. An escape from the monotony and chaos of our tumultuous lives. And that's exactly what Mattel and The Office did today, when they announced a collaboration so powerful, so specifically made to tempt and torture us with want and desire.
That's right, folks: a The Office-themed Polly Pocket exists. Yes, you read that correctly: Polly friggin' Pocket. That looks like a giant "World's Best Boss" mug. And it's so beautifully chock-a-block with references and in-jokes, the desk at your soul-killing job absolutely needs this in order to feel like the most Millennial space to have ever existed.

Yeppers, it's true! The Office reboot just confirmed its first returning star, and the excitement for the in-the-works continuation series has officially increased. Obviously, all of us fans are excited to see what's in store for the upcoming Peacock follow-up of the beloved sitcom, but let's be honest, we're all waiting to find out who from the original could be coming back.
Well, our first Dunder Mifflin alum has boarded the reboot to reprise his character: Oscar Nuñez will bring back his character Oscar Martinez. Variety notes that Oscar will not be a central character in the new series set in the same universe as all our favorite characters. Additionally, he's been part of the pilot script from the beginning and will be in the mix with the other new characters.

Peacock’s upcoming follow-up series to The Office will include one of the classic characters. First reported by Jeff Sneider and confirmed by Variety, Oscar Nuñez will return to play Oscar Martinez in the new Office series.
Variety’s sources say that Nuñez won’t be a central character in the follow-up, but he has been part of the script since the very beginning. It’s possible that other characters from The Office might appear alongside Oscar, but I’d wager that creators Greg Daniels and Michael Korman will want the new series to find its own footing before they bring in more blasts from the past. The report states that Daniels has previously said that “he felt he told a complete story for most of the characters — but if there was one character he’d like to revisit and explore, it would be Oscar.“

The connection between The Office and its follow-up series at Peacock has become more concrete.
Oscar Nuñez, who played accountant Oscar Martinez throughout The Office’s run, will reprise his character in the Peacock series. Like its predecessor, the show is a mockumentary in which the documentary crew that filmed at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch for years takes on a new project, following the publisher and staff of a historic but struggling Midwestern newspaper.
When The Office ended in 2013, Nuñez’s character was running for a state Senate seat in Pennsylvania while continuing to work at Dunder Mifflin. Details of how Oscar fits into the new series are being kept quiet for now — though Nuñez has been involved from the start (his casting was first reported by The Insneider newsletter). Oscar Nuñez will return as Oscar Martinez in Peacock’s follow-up series to “The Office,” Variety has confirmed.
Sources say Nuñez will not be the central character in the upcoming mockumentary sitcom — which takes place in the same universe as “The Office” — as it is an ensemble series. But he is part of the show’s character mix, and has been in the opening script from the beginning.
There are no further details regarding Oscar’s role or storyline in the new show, which Greg Daniels is creating and executive producing with Michael Korman (“Nathan For You”).

Richard Kindwill always be known for his role as Max Klein in Argo, the 2012 crime thriller starring and directed by Ben Affleck, but he's recently been working on a slew of short films that have opened up new doors for him. Kind features as a guest star in the first trailer for Ad World, the upcoming series following a flailing and out-of-touch ad agency with an incompetent staff struggling to stay relevant. Ad World has been set to premiere on March 11 and is reminiscent of The Office, the popular sitcom from Greg Daniels that stars Steve Carell and John Krasinski. The six-episode series comes from writer/director duo Ellie Sachs and Max Cohn, who previously worked with Kind on Proof of Concept, the 2023 short film telling the story of an aspiring filmmaker learning to finance and make their first short film.

There’s no denying that The Office is one of the greatest sitcoms in television history. Rashida Jones recently said she’s “ready any time” to join a revival of the NBC sitcom, in which she played nurse Ann Perkins for a majority of its seven-season run from 2009 to 2015, as she was recently reminded that her time jump scene in the series finale was set in 2025.

“Oh man, I hope sometime soon,” added Jones. “I know Mike Schur was like, ‘There has to be a reason for us to do it. We can’t just do it.’ But I would love that.”
