The Handmaid’s Tale executive producers Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield recently explained how Gilead will be portrayed differently in Hulu’s upcoming sequel spinoff The Testaments. Production on the new show began in April 2024, with franchise lead Elisabeth Moss attached as an executive producer.
During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Miller and Littlefield expressed their excitement about The Testaments, introducing a side of Gilead as seen through the eyes of girls who grew up within the totalitarian system. "I think June was at the very bottom of the ladder in Gilead. She was barely considered a woman," Miller said. "But her daughter, Agnes Mackenzie, who's still stuck in Gilead, is at the very top of the order. So, what you realize is that they're incredibly valued by Gilead, but it doesn't matter. Being at the top or being at the bottom is still sh***y for a woman in Gilead.

The Friend is gaining traction at the box office through sheer word of mouth; it continues to garner overwhelmingly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The reason is immediately evident in the film's premise, exploring themes of grief and friendship with the help of an adopted, mischievous dog.
The Friend is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, based on critic and audience consensus; it currently has high 80% ratings on the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter scores. Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, The Friend follows its main protagonist Iris (played by Naomi Watts) coming to terms with her close friend's passing; Walter (Bill Murray) made that all the more challenging, however, when he entrusted his dog Apollo to Iris before his death. Finally, after two long years spent dangling in the air from The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 cliffhanger finale, the award-winning dystopian saga is back with season 6, also known as the final season. Hulu debuted the last part of June’s (Elisabeth Moss) fight to rescue her daughter and put a stop to Gilead on Tuesday, April 8 with a three-episode premiere that saw our plot move forward after reaching its most critical stage yet.
Season 5 saw some major turning points riddled with deeply personal stakes, betrayal, and changing power dynamics. Tensions between Gilead and the U.S. government intensified after an American military operation to rescue children failed horribly and resulted in numerous deaths. Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) created a more liberal province within Gilead called New Bethlehem, where there are no handmaids, hangings, or abuse. June and Luke (O-t Fagbenle) ventured into No Man’s Land only to get captured and separated.

The sixth season of The Handmaid’s Tale opens with three episodes that reposition several central characters. June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), who had briefly found common ground at the end of season five, are split again as the new season begins.
Serena departs from a train while holding her infant son, avoiding a confrontation with Gilead refugee women. Her escape leads her to New Bethlehem, a separate enclave managed by Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford). Her arrival marks a return to the place where her influence once held weight, though her role there appears to be taking on a new form.
June, who had helped Serena during the train incident, continues north and reaches Alaska. There, she reconnects with her mother, Holly, portrayed by Cherry Jones, who reprises her role from earlier seasons. Holly, who had been presumed dead, welcomes June and her granddaughter. [This story contains spoilers from the three-episode season six premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale, “Train,” “Exile” and “Devotion.”]
The biggest question for The Handmaid’s Tale viewers heading into the sixth and final season was what was going to happen to June and Serena after they got on that train.
The three-episode premiere of the Emmy-winning dystopian Hulu saga quickly answered that question by setting its starring women on diverging paths once again for the final chapter in this Gilead story. Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) ends up jumping from the train, with her baby son in her arms, to escape a mob of Gilead refugee women looking for revenge against the former Gilead wife. She eventually makes her way back to Gilead via New Bethlehem, the reformed community founded by Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) where she is needed to recruit refugees.

Praise be. The Handmaid's Tale is back for its highly anticipated final chapter, more than two years after we saw June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) board a train "headed west" with her baby, Nichole, in the Season 5 finale. Also onboard was June's nemesis, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), who was toting her own newborn. What's in store is a "furious and frenzied ride" that brings the groundbreaking Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel back to Emmy-winning form, according to critics.
Thus far, reviews for Season 6 are the show's best yet, boasting a perfect 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (versus 80 percent for Season 5).
The Handmaid's Tale received 76 Emmy nominations with 15 wins over its first five seasons. At the 69th Emmys in 2017, the first season picked up prizes for drama series, directing, writing, lead actress (Moss), supporting actress (Ann Dowd), and guest actress (Alexis Bledel), in addition to trophies for cinematography and production design.

The Handmaid’s Tale delivered something unexpected when it ended last season. The cliffhanger finale to the penultimate season of the Emmy-winning saga put the complex pairing of June (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), along with their babies, on a train to the unknown with other Gilead refugees. That finale, titled “Safe” and written by creator Bruce Miller and directed by Moss, ended with a range of facial expressions from June that landed on a smirk.
“At the very end it feels like June is powerless. She can barely walk after the car accident, she has her baby all by herself and is in misery — she’s starting at the bottom,” Miller told The Hollywood Reporter at the time, recapping her harrowing season. But then he delivered some optimism about what was to come: “Look at all these people who are acting under her influence. She’s a leader now...

We knew the day was coming, but we didn't expect it to arrive so quickly. One of the only two A24 horror films currently streaming on Netflix will be leaving the platform very soon. How soon? We're talking next week. After being added in January 2025, it's already time to say goodbye to this horror masterpiece that had everyone talking back when it first hit theaters in 2018. It's the psychological horror Hereditary, and it's set to depart Netflix on Tuesday, April 15.
Since this film isn't a Netflix original but rather a licensed title, we always knew it would eventually be removed. However, we expected it to stay on the platform for at least six months before leaving. It turns out Netflix only secured the streaming rights for a three-month period. With the removal date fast approaching, it's crucial to watch it before it's gone. There’s no guarantee it will return,...

This article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of "The Handmaid's Tale" season 6.
The third episode of "The Handmaid's Tale" season 6 is titled "Devotion," and we've seen how devotion to religion can become poisonous when Gilead forces women into sexual slavery. But some of the most faithful characters are starting to question their own devotion or the devotion of others. In the previous episode, "Exile," Commander Lawrence barely joins dinner prayers. Serena later demands he gets down on his knees and say his own. He repeats Serena's same prayer from another night, causing her to question what is driving him to create New Bethlehem if it isn't God. He replies that whether it's God or not, he can't prove or disprove it. "And as they wrote in the 'Book of Mormon' musical, that's kind of what God was going for, right?" he dryly jokes. As Hulu’s dystopian series “The Handmaid’s Tale” comes to an end, Elisabeth Moss looks back on playing June Osborne with admiration.

“It goes a little wild there toward the end, and I think it’s what the fans have been waiting six seasons for — they’ve been waiting for revolution,” said Madeline Brewer. “We had a long resistance, we had a lot of building and building and really a slow burn to what is an outrageous revolution,...

Naomi Watts and Bill Murray in Bleecker Street’s The Friend. Credit: Bleecker Street
Bill Murray and Naomi Watts star as best friends in The Friend, a comedy-drama about a friend leaving his beloved pet, a Great Dane named Apollo, to his best friend. The friend didn’t let the bestie know about this plan, leaving the friend both grieving and trying to find a place for a dog that is not allowed in her no-pets apartment.
There even seems some doubt about whether that was really ever said out loud. But it is what the friend’s second ex-wife, who has the dog now, tells her he wanted. Naomi Watts plays Iris, the friend who is left the dog when her best friend Walter (Bill Murray) suddenly dies.
This smart, human comedy/drama is set in New York among writers, academics and literary types but it finds common ground...

In its final season, Hulu’s Emmy-winning dystopian series “The Handmaid’s Tale” asks some familiar questions which many throughout history have struggled with to this day: What does effective resistance look like? Who can we look to for leadership and wisdom in times of great struggle?
In the world of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the answer to both is June Osborne.
Based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is a harrowing and inspiring tale about the power of one person to bravely stand up against injustice and change the world. It’s also a frustrating missed opportunity to learn from and engage with the real people and history from which this story draws its inspiration. These have always been the two sides of this series, and Season 6 leans into that strange dichotomy more than ever.

Naomi Watts stars in ‘The Friend’ (Photo Credit: Bleecker Street)
Based on Sigrid Nunez’s bestselling novel, The Friend is a poignant and powerful story of grief and the unexpected ways that we heal. Following the sudden death of her friend and former professor, Walter (a pitch-perfect Bill Murray), Iris finds herself the guardian of Apollo, his beloved—and ginormous—Great Dane. What begins for Iris as a completely overwhelming arrangement gradually evolves into a life-changing experience.
Naomi Watts (Feud) delivers a touching performance as Iris, a writer and teacher who grapples with the absence of her mentor while also caring for his giant, grieving dog in a small, rent-controlled, no-pets-allowed apartment. A cat person, Iris never expected to be responsible for a dog, let alone one the size of a small horse who misses Walter as much as she does. No one, including herself, believes this arrangement will work out.

Next Tuesday, on April 8, Hulu will start airing the sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale, its adaptation of Margaret Atwood's 1985 dystopian novel...well, actually, they finished adapting most of Atwood's book a while ago and have been exploring a new story, but the basics are still there: a fertility crisis led to the collapse of the United States as we know it and the rise of an autocratic nation called Gilead, where the few remaining fertile women are used as breeding stock. June (Elisabeth Moss) is one such "handmaid." Recent seasons have focused on her trying to rescue her daughter Hannah — called Agnes in Gilead — from the tyrannical regime.
The Handmaid's Tale will all be over in a few months, but Hulu has no intention of letting one of its most prestigious shows just fade away. It's working on a sequel series called The Testaments, based on...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Sequel Series ‘The Testaments’ Officially Greenlit At Hulu As 9 Round Out Cast

Hulu has officially ordered The Handmaid’s Tale follow-up The Testaments to series with production set to begin on April 7. From executive producers Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield, the drama is based on the 2019 Margaret Atwood novel of the same name set in the dystopian theocracy of Gilead more than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The Handmaid’s Tale lead Elisabeth Moss will also executive produce the project. As Deadline previously reported, the hope is for Moss to guest star in the sequel, reprising the role of June Osbourne, who is linked to Agnes and Daisy. With The Handmaid’s Tale set to premiere its final season on April 8, appearances from June will depend on whether she survives the rebellion unless they opt to go the flashback route.
The Testaments also rounds out its cast with 9 new actors: Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies,...

Netflix, Prime Video, Max, Disney+, Apple TV+ y otras plataformas sacan toda su artillería. © Hulu, Apple TV+ & Netflix

April is here, and that means there's new shows and seasons premiering on streamers, including Hulu. It's a bit of a slower month, but there's still some exciting additions to come that we can look forward to. If you need a reality fix, there's a new season of Vanderpump Villa. There's also comedy special Jessica Kirson: I’m the Man, and an all-new game show, Got to Get Out.
However if you're like me and prefer scripted shows, that's honestly what I'm most looking forward to. And there's three dramatic ones, including The Handmaid's Tale season 6, coming to Hulu in April 2025. Check out the list below!
Dying for SexRelease date: Friday, April 4, 2025Episode count: 8 episodes (binge)Cast: Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, Jay Duplass, Kelvin Yu, David Rasche, Esco Jouléy, and Sissy Spacek
Starring Michelle Williams in the lead role, Dying for Sex is originally a FX series.

Times may be bleak, but at least we’ll be getting to spend more time in the horrific, not-too-far-off-from-our-own-world Gilead of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Not only will the show be returning in April for its sixth and final season, but a spin-off series based on author Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel, “The Testaments,” is also in the works at Hulu. While Ann Dowd has already been revealed to be reprising her role of Aunt Lydia, joined by new cast members Chase Infiniti, Rowen Blanchard, and Lucy Halliday, IndieWire can exclusively announce that actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz will also be appearing in the show as a series regular.
A source close to the project shared that Seimetz will be playing Paula, step-mother to Agnes, the daughter of June Osborne (Elizabeth Moss) and Luke Bankole (O-t Fagbenle), formerly known as Hannah. In the novel version of “The Testaments,” which is set 15 years after “The Handmaid’s Tale,...

With an abundance of shows and movies on the platform, Hulu always has a slew of options for its subscribers to choose from. While there might not be a ton of new series arriving in April, that doesn’t mean the streaming service is lacking when it comes to quality. In fact, there’s one particular original series slated to return for its final season that viewers most definitely won’t want to miss.
With comedy, drama, and even reality television, Hulu is bound to have something almost any viewer would love. Even if audiences have yet to see previous seasons of the shows slated to return, there’s still plenty of time to catch up on old episodes before the new ones premiere. The choices in April might not be excessive, but there’s still plenty for viewers to enjoy on the streaming platform next month.

This is a nifty indie weekend with a busier and higher profile limited release schedule than we’ve seen in some time. The Ballad of Wallis Island, The Friend, Grand Tour, Viet And Nam, Holy Cow and documentaries The Encampments, which is super timely, and Secret Mall Apartment are peppering theaters in major markets.
Many have festival imprimaturs from Cannes on down and great Rotten Tomatoes critics scores. In moderate release, Sony Pictures Classics is out with Steve Coogan in The Penguin Lessons.
Limited openings: Watermelon Pictures debuts Macklemore-produced The Encampments at the Angelika, which has been adding shows, and the doc looks like it’s heading to a super opening of $70+k at one location. The distributor moved up the release date given the timeliness of the film, which follows students at Columbia University who launched a movement protesting the war in Gaza. It features detained student activist...
