Last month, The New Yorker published Dexter Filkins’ exhaustive article on “The U.S. Military’s Recruiting Crisis.” It seems the titular failure to enlist new recruits in sufficient numbers has compromised our readiness to defend the country in the event of an actual war, never mind fulfill promises past administrations have made to the governments of other nations.

Maybe that problem would be solved if troops could be posted at Stroopsdorf, the U.S. service base that provides the setting for Going Dutch. Stroopsdorf doesn’t have: strict requirements on fitness or hair length. Any apparent need to use a tower that’s been colonized by local wildlife. Guns. Stroopsdorf does have: bowling. Laundry. Cheeseworks. Silent discos. The best dining facility in the military. The highest morale in the army. If we ever find out they get U.S. TV channels via satellite, I might look into moving there myself.

One of the riskiest things an actor can do when they're starring on a hit TV show is to leave that show. It's not always the case, partially depending on the series in question, but when some TV actors have attempted to leap from the small screen elsewhere, they only end up squandering their chance. It's true, of course, that you can look at a guy like George Clooney, who had acted steadily for about a decade prior to his prominent role on the NBC hospital drama "ER" and was able to make the jump to the big screen ... eventually. But you can also look at David Caruso, who seemed to jump off the screen in the ABC police drama "NYPD Blue" in its first season, and then chose to leave the show to pursue a film career ... before heading back to the world of TV with the CBS procedural "CSI: Miami.

I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.

Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.

The Dean of Medicine at the hospital and Gregory House's boss throughout the show, Cuddy acknowledged the genius of her underling, but was regularly exasperated by House's frequent rule-breaking, lack of stricter, and disregard for even basic manners.

In spite of this, the pair formed a strong attraction, and fans shipped the couple as "Huddy," though it would be a long path to their inevitable romance, which came with obstacles like Cuddy being engaged to someone else and House moving on from his painkiller addiction.

The ninth annual event will take place Tuesday, August 27th and Wednesday August 28th in Greenport, NY. This year, Emmy-nominated stars John Turturro (“Severance”) and Marcia Gay Harden (“The Morning Show”) will be among the honorees, as well as “Frasier” Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer and “The West Wing” Emmy-winning alum Richard Schiff.

Harden will be celebrated with the Canopy Award, while Schiff will be feted with the title of 2024 Ambassador for the Arts. Schiff also co-stars in the North Fork TV Festival comedy pilot winner “Swipe NYC,” which will screen.

Awkwardness knows no bounds here, and the kooky comedy has enough steam to carry it all the way through to a lovely ending.
