The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has some of the best heroines of the horror genre – and my personal favorite of the Elm Street heroines is Alice Johnson, played by Lisa Wilcox in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Wilcox at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her encounters with Freddy Krueger and the experience of working on those classic ’80s horror films. You can hear what Wilcox had to say by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, Ken Wheat, and Jim Wheat (with Helgeland also sharing story credit with William Kotzwinkle), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master has the following synopsis: Your fave psycho-sandman is back!

The Story: A British military engineer (Val Kilmer) travels to Africa circa 1900 to complete a railroad project that’s been plagued by delays. While there, he’s horrified to discover his native workers are being picked off one by one by a pair of man-eating Lions. Ill-equipped to deal with the almost supernaturally deadly lions, he enlists the aid of a famed American hunter (Michael Douglas) with a tortured past.
The History: If you’ve read William Goldman’s second volume of memoirs, “Which Lie Did I Tell?” you’ll note that the esteemed writer of Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid and The Sting is not entirely pleased with the finished version of The Ghost and the Darkness. This was his passion project, basing it on the real Tsavo Man-Eaters, who are on display at the Museum of Natural History in Chicago. It’s been over two weeks since Gene Hackman was found dead alongside wife Betsy Arakawa inside the couple’s Santa Fe home.
The cause of Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths was initially unclear, but it now looks as though she passed away from a rare virus.
Hackman was suffering from Alzheimer’s and, unable to seek help, he passed away roughly one week later.

Now, a new mystery has emerged, as there are questions as to who will inherit Hackman’s $80 million fortune.
Gene Hackman’s will makes no mention of his children
According to a new report from TMZ, Hackman’s three children — son Christopher, 65, and daughters Leslie, 58, and Elizabeth, 62, all by his first wife, Faye Maltese — are not named as beneficiaries.

Gene Hackman angrily bolted out of his chair and came at me. I swear he wanted to throw a punch.
This was Puerto Rico in 2000, during rehearsals for Under Suspicion, which my good buddy Stephen Hopkins was prepping to direct with stars Gene, Morgan Freeman, Monica Bellucci and Thomas Jane.
Those weeks of private rehearsals remain one of the greatest pleasures in my long career. Stephen, Gene, Morgan and I spent our days on an upper floor of a San Juan hotel, closed from recent hurricane damage, in a space the production built out to be identical to the actual set we would later use. It was mostly just the four of us every day for three weeks.
Stephen later told me, “If only I could have stopped you” from saying what I said to Gene. This screenplay was very much like a stage play. Stephen had sat with me...

Initially released in 2002, 24 became the face of a new generation of action TV as it followed CTU agent Jack Bauer in a series of real-time missions to safeguard America from terrorism. Ranging from preventing nuclear attacks in the heart of Los Angeles to assassinations in Washington DC, the hero's intensity and skill made both him and the show iconic. Since the original series concluded, Fox tried to get it back off the ground -- including a canceled spin-off.
The original 24 series won over millions of fans around the world for its well-written political drama, intense action, and binge-inducing real-time format. As audiences could see Bauer race around Los Angeles, fighting off terrorists and commandos, they'd also be treated to a look at the president's response and leadership.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. Freddy Krueger’s extended vacation is going to continue a while longer. At least we have several films to revisit – and as part our of Halloween celebrations here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, we decided to put together a list ranking those films from worst to best. So keep scrolling down to see our take on Nightmare on Elm Street Movies Ranked.
A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)

Visual effects artists offer their breakdown of the movie Lost in Space. A reboot of the classic sci-fi series of the same name, the 1998 action-adventure sci-fi film tells the story of the Robinson family, who journey to space in order to fight for humanity. Lost in Space was directed by Stephen Hopkins and featured a leading cast including Gary Oldman, William Hurt, Matt LeBlanc, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham, Jared Harris, Lacey Chabert, Jack Johnson, Mark Goddard, and Lennie James.
Now, Corridor Crew provides a breakdown of the VFX in Lost in Space. Specifically, they analyze a shot wherein LeBlanc's space helmet comes down on his face in chunks. In their explanation, the VFX artists explained that there is "absolutely no CG in the shot." Instead, the shot was taken by filming the scene with and without the helmet, trying to mimic the movements as closely as possibly, and then creating...

Once set up at Netflix, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s production company Intrepid Pictures now has an exclusive multiyear overall series deal with Amazon MGM Studios and one of the shows they’re working on for Prime Video is Flanagan’s dream project, a series adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower novels. Fans are anxiously waiting for updates on the status of that project – but when it moves forward, it won’t be the first time someone has attempted to make a TV series version of The Dark Tower for Prime Video. Five years ago, Glen Mazzara, Akiva Goldsman, and King himself developed a take on the material and a pilot episode was shot, with Stephen Hopkins directing and Sam Strike in the lead role of gunslinger Roland. Amazon decided not to move ahead with the series at that time… and for fans who have been wondering what the pilot episode was like,...

“Whoever wins, we lose,” read the famous tagline for Alien vs. Predator.
Ask most critics in 2004, and they would insist that we did indeed lose. “The title alone betrays an entire Hollywood mindset of rehash, reheat, recombine. Re-please,” wrote Jessica Winter of Time Out. “A movie based on a video game based on two entirely separate sci-fi horror series—so whatever was interesting in the originals has long been bred out, like double-jointedness,” lamented Ty Burr of the Boston Globe.
These samples captured the general tenor of the critical response, which decried AvP as an unholy diluting of two venerable franchises, a mess that no one in their right mind would want. According to these critics, AvP could appeal to no one who hadn’t read the original Dark Horse comic books, played the video games, or watched and re-watched the xenomorph tease at the end of Predator 2.
Of course the critics were wrong.

Dive into inspiring true stories like Race and Richard Jewell, or enjoy whimsical underdog tales like Eddie the Eagle and Cool Runnings. Films like Foxcatcher and I, Tonya delve into the darker sides of Olympic sports, while classics like Miracle and Chariots of Fire inspire with tales of victory.

Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

After nearly 35 years, the "Predator" franchise is still going strong. Despite a fair share of disappointment during its seven-film (and counting) run, every decade produces a strong chapter that reinvigorates interest in the mysterious alien hunters. John McTiernan's muscle-bound 1987 creature feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger remains the best. Still, more recent offerings like Nimród Antal's 2010 sequel "Predators" and Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 prequel "Prey" have closed the gap and provided hope for future entries.
Delightfully R-rated, the "Predator" series follows a group of elite alien warriors, brought to life with incredible special effects, who venture to different planets to test themselves against the best killers they can find. Curiously, none of the films have allowed a Predator to claim victory over their most formidable foes, though they do enjoy minor victories that make way for some nasty spine-ripping action. To date, we've seen Predator eliminate its victims in various ways...

One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. On Nov. 6, 2001, the Kiefer Sutherland-starrer from Imagine Television bowed on Fox in the 9 p.m. hour, kickstarting a franchise that aired for more than a decade. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
No question, there are some eerie similarities between the premiere episode of 24 and the terrible events of Sept 11. The tightly woven drama includes vague warnings of terrorist activity, an assassination plot and an imperiled airliner. But instead of causing discomfort, 24 grabs you by the collar and simply won’t let go. Few shows are ever this riveting.

The "Nightmare on Elm Street" film series was a hotbed for emerging talent. Many of the directors in the franchise would go on to prolific or interesting careers. Chuck Russell, director of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" would go on to make Hollywood blockbusters like "The Mask," "Eraser," and "The Scorpion King." Renny Harlin, who directed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" would likewise enter the Hollywood mainstream with films like "Predator 2," "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," and "Cutthroat Island." Jack Sholder, Stephen Hopkins, and Rachael Talalay also emerged from the series' directors pool.
One can also find a few rising actors at the start of their careers throughout the Freddy Krueger movies. Famously, a young Johnny Depp starred in Wes Craven's 1984 original, and, for "Dream Warriors," Patricia Arquette made her cinematic debut.

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. In 1898, Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson was sent to Africa on behalf of the British government to oversee the construction of an important railway bridge. Located in the remote Tsavo region of Kenya, the operation employed thousands of laborers and spanned multiple miles of railway track, making it a considerable undertaking for any one person. But John Patterson was up for the daunting task. However, mere days after his arrival, a vicious pair of male lions began targeting and brutally attacking the workers. For more than nine months, the rogue predators used the work camp as their own personal hunting ground, dragging men from their tents at night and killing them for sport. They became known as “Ghost” and “Darkness” by the frightened workers, who believed them to be vengeful spirits defending their ancestral land from the encroaching British empire. With the attacks only getting worse, it was up to...

Vincent Cassel, the chameleon of French cinema, is not one for analysing his characters. In fact, he hates the very idea. When we meet over video chat, he mentions Michel Simon, the “wonderful French actor from the Thirties and Forties” who starred in classics like Boudu Saved from Drowning and L’Atalante. “When suddenly coming across an actor that would discuss the character and talk, he would go, ‘Ah, another intelligent actor.’ And that wasn’t a compliment! Because you don’t have to be smart to be an actor. You have to be able to let yourself go.”

It’s easy to forgive a lot in a romance if the chemistry is strong enough, and for the first couple episodes of Apple TV+’s Liaison, the sparks between Eva Green’s Alison and Vincent Cassel’s Gabriel seem reason enough to forge ahead. It hardly matters if we don’t really understand the international conspiracy that’s reunited these estranged exes, or that we don’t yet understand what transpired between them all those years ago. The smolder between them draws us in, even when all they’re doing is exchanging a wordless gaze through a rain-splattered window.
But without enough fuel to ignite a blaze, smolder is about as far as it gets. By the time Liaison stumbles to a close, whatever flickers of promise it showed early on have long since been stamped out by indifferent storytelling and a bloated run time.

I’ve long been a fan of the brilliant work of Vincent Cassel. The legendary actor has proven fantastic in films like Black Swan, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, Mesrine: Killer Instinct, Irreversible, Eastern Promises, and so much more. And now, he takes on the role of the Stephen Hopkins-directed six-episode thriller Liaison. The upcoming series premieres on Apple TV this Friday and also features the terrific Eva Green, Daniel Francis, Lyna Dubarry, and more. And yes, the performances here are all terrific, and you can’t ask for a better couple than Green and Cassel to bring it all to life.
Interviewing Vincent Cassel is an absolute treat. While you may expect the actor to be intense, he is one of the warmest and most charming guys to talk with. Having had the pleasure of speaking to him in the past, I was thrilled to talk about his latest project.

Leonis Productions, the Newen Studios-owned French banner created by Jean-Benoit Gillig, is developing a raft of international shows on the heels of “Liaison,” Apple TV+’s first French original.
The company reached a milestone with “Liaison,” a thriller series created and entirely penned by Virginie Brac (“Spiral”) and directed by Stephen Hopkins. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green lead a cast that includes Peter Mullan, Gérard Lanvin, Daniel Francis, Stanislas Merhar, Irène Jacob, Laëtitia Eïdo, Eriq Ebouaney, Tchéky Karyo, Bukky Bakray and Thierry Fremont.
“It’s a sprawling French-British thriller set against the backdrop of Brexit, and there’s a metaphor between the love tragedy playing as the primary plot and the political tragedy embodied by Brexit unfolding in the background,” said Gillig.

Despite reports of a mystical, uncut version of Predator 2, it likely doesn't exist. Predator 2 has an interesting legacy within the franchise. While it's now well-regarded for its expansion of the mythology - with one easter egg basically setting up Alien Vs Predator - and intense action, but it was a disappointment on its original release. Audiences were letdown about the lack of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it somewhat stalled the series on the big screen for 14 years. Director Stephen Hopkins also had to submit the sequel to the MPAA around 20 times to avoid an Nc-17 rating.
Had Predator 2 been slapped with that rating, it would have severely limited its box office potential. The tight post-production time might these edits had to be made quickly, as Hopkins recounted in a chat with Avp Galaxy in 2021. In the years since its 1990 debut, reports of a super gory, Nc-17 version of...

An early draft for Predator 2 featured a cameo written for comedian Billy Crystal - and it was suitably bizarre. As reported by Avp Galaxy, this first draft for Predator 2 isn't hugely different from the final version, though there are some key deviations. The story is set in New York instead of L.A., Gary Busey's Peter Keyes survives and the titular alien is killed off by his own clan in the finale. Those who've watched Predator 2 may recall a scene where the wounded creature patches itself up in the apartment of an elderly couple, with wife Ruth becoming increasingly distressed by the squeals coming from their bathroom.
It's a moment of comic relief to break up the action, but the first draft had the Ruth role earmarked for Billy Crystal. The intent was likely to put Crystal in old age makeup like his scenes in The Princess Bride,...

In 1987, a hyper-advanced alien species known as the “Yautja” descended upon an elite military squad in Guatemala. Thanks to its memorable performances, quotable dialogue and inventive action set pieces, “Predator” became an American action movie staple. The film has spawned four sequels, including the new Hulu film “Prey,” and two spinoffs. Yet, the mega franchise all started with a piece of paper underneath a door.
“The Thomas brothers snuck the script onto the Fox lot and under somebody’s door,” says John Davis, who has produced all seven “Predator” movies. “We got there on Monday, and there was this script. I was an executive at the time, and I had been working with Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was a really good friend of mine. We were always both trying to figure out how we could work together. And so I’m the executive on this movie at Fox, and what happened is I became a producer.

With Prey a runaway hit on Disney’s Hulu streaming service, people are quick to call it the greatest Predator sequel ever. But wait just a second folks – has everyone forgotten about 1990’s Predator 2 starring Danny Glover? Easily the least seen movie in the Predator franchise, this guns-blazing sequel married the urban action genre to the sci-fi/horror vibe of the first movie, and the result is a kick-ass movie that too few action fans have seen. It didn’t set the box office on fire, but it’s at least as good as Prey and should be celebrated as a truly great Predator movie. We’ll tell you why in this episode of The Best Movie You Never Saw!
For one thing – the movie has a kick-ass hero. Danny Glover’s Mike Harrigan is more of an everyman than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch. Not the hulking military man,...

Picture the scene: A camera pans over the charred remains of what was once a large section of dense rainforest in the Central American banana republic of Val Verde. Suddenly, the cloaked feet of a Predator come into view. The alien hunter plunges a barely visibly claw down into the ashen ground where flora and fauna once flourished. A second later, the severed arm of a Predator is pulled from the shattered earth. The semi-visible Predator makes a bee-line for his fallen comrade’s wrist-based computer.
A read-out appears on its screen, detailing everything that led to this point. The replay stops on the image of a human face: it’s a face audiences know all too well from a decade of action movies. Right here and right now though, they know him as Maj. Alan “Dutch” Schaefer. Without saying a word, the Predator knows this is its next target.

Arnold Schwarzenegger kicks off his legendary performance as Dutch, the alien-fighting star of the first and best “Predator” movie, with a warning: “We’re a rescue team, not assassins.” It’s a fitting starting block for the 1987 action classic-turned-seven-film sci-fi series, though you might not know it at first.
Sent into the perilous jungles of Val Verde, a fictional location first seen in the Schwarzenegger-starring “Commando” (and again in the Bruce Willis-anchored “Die Hard 2”), Dutch assumes he’s on an earthbound mission. So, naturally, he begins operating by earthbound rules. But when strangely skinned corpses and mysterious shimmers in the trees reveal a hulking alien hunting humans for sport, the reluctant fighter is forced to embrace guerrilla warfare — and a brutal personal philosophy — to survive.

To say that "Predator 2" is divisive would be an understatement. Fans of the famed Yautja either adore this movie for its ridiculousness or despise it for the same reason. Regardless of your opinion, fans can agree that its main character, LAPD Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover), was a straightlaced but still fun addition to the franchise.
Many fans might know that Harrigan was supposed to team up with Arnold Schwarzenegger's Alan "Dutch" Schaefer, the main character from the 1987 movie, for this sequel. However, the latter was unable to return for this sequel, prompting the casting of Gary Busey...

The Broadway-bound revival of the musical 1776, which begins a pre-New York engagement at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Ma, next month, has announced a cast comprised fully of performers who identify as female, non-binary and trans.
The cast announced Friday was specifically for the A.R.T. production and might not necessarily carry over to the staging at Roundabout’s American Airlines Theatre on Broadway in September (or a U.S. tour set to launch in February 2023), but the news provides a clear indication of the production’s reimagined, groundbreaking approach.

There are a plethora of new titles coming to Prime Video and IMDb TV (Amazon’s premium free streaming service) in August, but the best on the list is on August 1st when Predator 2 hits.
The 1990 sequel from director Stephen Hopkins starred Danny Glover, Gary Busey, María Conchita Alonso, Ruben Blades, Bill Paxton, Calvin Lockhart, Kevin Peter Hall. It’s the perfect Saturday afternoon flick, has a wonderful score from composer Alan Silvestri and the final scene of the movie with the big reveal of the spaceship’s wall that the Predator had a Xenomorph skull as one of its prized trophies. We Alien fans in the audience that opening weekend went wild and hoped for an Alien v Predator crossover, which finally happened with 2004’s Alien vs. Predator. A sequel, Predators, was released in 2010, followed by The Predator in 2018.
Predator 2 has developed a huge cult following since it’s initial release.

The latest in our series of writers sticking up for maligned movies is a defence of the Arnie-free alien sequel
Predator is a bona fide classic of science fiction. Predator 2 is, by most accounts, utter trash – one of countless sequels from the late 80s and early 90s that live in the shadow of their predecessor. Yet such is the way that the predator has been tarnished by almost every film that has come since, Predator 2 stands up as one of the creature’s best outings. Stephen Hopkins’s film stands up well to repeat viewings and is far less dumb than it first appears. It has its dumb moments but still has more brains behind the brawn than it receives credit for.
