The Conjuring and Aquaman star Patrick Wilson's psychological thriller, A kind of Murder, will soon hit Max. The underrated murder mystery movie, which stars The Sinner and Blade: Trinity's Jessica Biel opposite Wilson, debuted in 2016 to less-than-stellar reviews from critics.
Audiences will have another chance to re-experience and re-evaluate A Kind of Murder when it arrives on Max on April 1. Directed by Andy Goddard from a screenplay by Susan Boyd, the film adapts Patricia Highsmith's 1954 novel The Blunderer. Wilson plays Walter Stackhouse, an architect and aspiring writer of short-story crime fiction, fascinated by the recent murder of the spouse of local bookstore owner Marty Kimmel. Biel portrays Walter's wife Clara Stackhouse, who apparently commits suicide not far from the restaurant parking lot where Kimmel's wife was murdered. A police investigation led by Detective Lawrence Corby ensues, as both husbands are suspected of being involved in the deaths of both women.

Throughout the seven seasons spread across nearly eight years, Mad Men really encaptured a lot of different raging themes in the 1960s, never ceasing to win over complete fan and viewer attention with most of its plotlines. While the television drama series created by Matthew Weiner never failed to deliver, most of its scenes were curated specifically for a reason.
Mad Men. | Credits: AMC.
Of course, there were quite a few gut-wrenching scenes in it as well, ones that left viewers wondering why what happened happened. One of these scenes included the distressing one where Christina Hendricks’ beloved character makes a rather severe decision to sleep with a client to win over a crucial contract. But Weiner has a real reason behind making the actress pull it off.

The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc has finally commented on the fan theory that Theo Rossi's Dr. Julian Rush is the Batman villain Scarecrow. Introduced in episode 2, "Inside Man," Julian Rush is a doctor at Arkham Asylum who developed a close bond with Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) before becoming her romantic partner. While some fans initially suspected he might be The Batman universe interpretation of Hugo Strange, many fans noticed in episode 4 that Rush's office featured what looked like a Scarecrow mask and a mysterious glove similar to the one the character wore in the Arkham video games series.
Speaking with Screen Rant at the Golden Globes, The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc shuts down the fan theory that Rush is intended to be Scarecrow. "Well, I can say he's not the Scarecrow," LeFranc said. It is a straightforward answer and solidifies Rush as being an original creation for The Penguin,...

HBO's The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc has reacted to a popular fan theory about one of the show's characters. Many have speculated that Theo Rossi's Dr. Julian Rush is actually a version of DC Comics' Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow, one of Batman's most enduring villains.
In The Penguin, Rossi's character, an Arkham psychiatrist, is an ally of Christina Millioti's Sophia Falcone, a former patient of his. In Episode 4, a strange scarecrow-like mask and a needle-finger glove can be seen in Julian's office, with many fans believing they hinted at the character's true identity and source material origin. LeFranc was recently on the Golden Globes carpet where she addressed if Dr. Julian Rush was indeed the ReevesVerse's version of Scarecrow. "Well, I can say he's not the Scarecrow," she said, dousing hopes fans will get to see Rossi don the mask and unleash his fear toxin on Gotham City.

Not every character from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe has the luxury of being as adored as its title character. Xander Harris has been largely considered the worst, while some fans hated Dawn just as much. However, few Buffyverse characters drew as much ire as Angel's Connor, the son of the spinoff's lead.
The comic book continuation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, particularly the Angel series from Idw Publishing, was a saving grace for Connor. Played by Vincent Kartheiser during the show's last three seasons, the half-demon son of vampires Angel and Darla constantly fought an internal (and external) battle with a father he was trained to hate in a hell dimension.
While Connor's story could've been a compelling arc, it largely amounted to some icky storytelling that even Cordelia's Charisma Carpenter calls problematic. The show never had the opportunity to truly expand on Connor's redemption story,...

Imagine Mad Men without Jon Hamm’s brooding Don Draper—impossible, right? Well, it nearly happened. And oddly enough, his devastatingly good looks were the problem. Studio execs fretted that Hamm might be too handsome for viewers to buy him as the complex, troubled ad man, fearing his charm could overshadow the gritty 1960s narrative.

As if that weren’t enough, The Sopranos icon James Gandolfini almost sealed the show’s fate before it aired, as his powerhouse performance left everyone questioning if another morally gray lead could ever work. The combo of Hamm’s looks and Gandolfini’s shadow nearly killed the series, but luckily, Mad Men managed to break through—proving that charm, danger, and a killer suit could redefine TV drama.

Mad Men ended in 2015 after seven magnificent seasons. While the show's plot is one of its strong points, its ambiguous ending still has fans engaged in endless debates. However, it is precisely this open ending that gives the story a realistic, rich, and complex approach. With well-written plots and well-developed characters, the show delves into the world of advertising, following the journey of a group of people who have grown so much throughout the seven seasons.

Exclusive: Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men) and Laura Slade Wiggins (Shameless) have signed on to star alongside Landon Ashworth (Space Force) in Go On, a fantasy drama marking Ashworth’s feature directorial debut, which will enter production in New Mexico in September.
Marking Ashworth’s first produced feature screenplay, the film follows two strangers on a remote mountain, scorched by forest fires, as they help each other process baggage from their previous lives so they can transition to the afterlife. Ashworth crafted the screenplay after losing his very young cousin, Landon Bellm, to suicide.
“Having my feature film directorial debut be my own screenplay which addresses real, meaningful, and relatable issues is an honor,” Ashworth told Deadline. “Also, having the opportunity to work with Vincent is beyond a dream come true. I’ve followed his career for over a decade and knew he needed to play the co-lead of this movie.

He's the most hated guy in the office and by fans worldwide, but no one hates him more than himself. Pete Campbell is Mad Men's most hated character, and Season 5 peels back the layers of a bully to find the small man underneath. Played by an enthralling Vincent Kartheiser, who delivers a deceptively difficult performance, Pete Campbell lies, cheats, and disrespects women in all avenues of life, from the office to his home. He seemingly has it all with a wife and kid in the suburbs and a good job at a prominent advertising agency. But, in reality, the materialism and status he so hungrily chases have landed him with nothing.

What do we want from a spinoff? More time with a favorite supporting character, as with Frasier or Better Call Saul? An expansion of a compelling mythos, as with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or House of the Dragon? Or perhaps a deeper exploration of some potent themes, as with Rugrats offshoot All Grown Up?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel fulfilled all of those criteria and more.
Premiering in 1999, with its first four seasons running concurrently with Buffy, Angel’s eponymous hero was a reformed vampire, the ex-lover of his parent show’s titular Slayer. Not every successful TV show needs a spinoff – sometimes it's best to let a great show stand alone. Mad Men, The Wire, and Lost all resisted the urge for spinoffs, allowing their original stories to shine. The Americans and The Leftovers also chose to end without spinoffs, keeping their complete narratives intact.
Whenever a hit television show came to an end it was never long before a spinoff or follow-up was announced, but in some rare cases, there have been instances where great shows have been allowed to remain just that without any subsequent media. For every successful spinoff, like Frasier or Better Call Saul, there were always ten more disappointments, like Joey or After Mash, that viewers would rather just forget. That’s why it was always such a refreshing change of pace when series creators just let their show exist without the need to turn it into a sprawling extended universe.

That’s why it was always such a refreshing change of pace when series creators just let their show exist without the need to turn it into a sprawling extended universe.

TV characters can evolve drastically over time, but some shows keep them stagnant for prolonged runs. Rapid character growth can lead to stale storylines, while gradual change can be more impactful. Not all character development is positive, but even negative growth can make characters more compelling.
TV characters don't have to change so much, but some shows evolve their characters beyond all recognition. Unlike film, TV is a medium which isn't inherently focused on change. Because shows are often created with the goal of running interminably, it doesn't help the writers if the characters resolve their various issues too soon. Shows can quickly become stale if a character overcomes their fatal flaw, because there isn't a natural progression for their next steps. However, this is just one method of constructing a TV show, and some shows tell overarching stories about characters slowly growing.

1998's All I Wanna Do deserved more recognition and success like The Holdovers, with its stellar cast and thoughtful satire. All I Wanna Do masterfully balanced comedy and drama, addressing real issues with wit and humor. The movie's failure can be attributed to alleged sabotage by Harvey Weinstein's company and a series of title changes.

26 years before The Holdovers became a surprise success, Disney buried one of the best boarding school dramedy movies ever made. While 2023’s The Holdovers wasn’t a massive box office success, director Alexander Payne’s darkly comedic drama was by no means a failure. The boarding school movie earned stellar reviews upon release and performed admirably at the box office given its stiff competition. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for one earlier boarding school dramedy that deserved to be a huge hit. 1998’s...

TV characters can't all get equal attention, resulting in untapped potential for some. Supporting characters with brilliant performances can be more compelling than the main characters. Some TV characters could have had bigger roles and added depth to their respective shows.
TV shows which juggle a lot of characters can't give them all equal attention, and this means that sometimes a great character fails to live up to their potential. Difficult decisions often have to be made with long-running TV shows, so some characters are cut down in their prime before their story fully develops. Sometimes this is due to practical concerns with the actors, but most frequently it's a conscious decision to sideline supporting characters in favor of a show's stars. Unfortunately, this leaves a lot of characters with untapped potential.

Betty Draper was not as bad as her ex-husband, Don, yet she faced harsh judgment for her behavior in Mad Men. Elena Gilbert faced hate in The Vampire Diaries mostly because of the love triangle, despite her kind nature and difficult experiences. Karen Filippelli in The Office received undeserved hate simply because she wasn't the favored romantic pairing, showing unfair judgment in fans' eyes.
There are many complex characters out there, and some of them rightfully get hate, yet some female TV characters who have been long-hated don't fit into that category. Drawing strong reactions from the audience proves the actors, the writers, and the directors did their job well, whether with universally loved or despite characters. However, certain female TV characters tend to receive flak above and beyond what is fair, even if they do make some questionable choices.

Jon Hamm is open to the possibility of reprising his role as Don Draper in Mad Men but expresses doubt that revisiting the character may be too much after the satisfying ending of the series. Hamm is currently involved in various other projects, including a lead role in Fargo season 5 and a major supporting role in The Morning Show season 3. While there is nostalgia for Hamm's portrayal of Draper, the risk of a revival is high and may not be necessary.
Mad Men actor Jon Hamm has an intriguing response when asked if he'd be open to reprising the role of Don Draper. Mad Men accurately depicted the racism of the 1960s, but failed to condemn it enough, reducing black characters to their impact on white characters. The fate of Peggy and Pete's baby remains a mystery, leaving the audience wondering what happened to the child throughout the series. The show could have handled issues of body-shaming and Betty's weight gain with more empathy and representation, rather than using it as a plot device to punish her character.
Sixteen years after its premiere, Mad Men remains compulsively watchable, but there are some aspects that haven't aged quite so well. Considered one of the most iconic examples of prestige television, Mad Men ran for 7 seasons on AMC from 2007 to 2015. Lane Pryce's death in Mad Men was foreshadowed in the show's fifth season, when he made a risky decision to forge Don Draper's signature on a check. Lane's suicide was driven by humiliation and a sense of betrayal after his embezzlement was discovered by Bert Cooper. His decision to take his own life was a tragic and shocking moment in the series. Actor Jared Harris, who played Lane Pryce, was sad to leave the show but appreciated the impactful storyline given to his character. The portrayal of Lane's death was seen as an act of revenge and a passive-aggressive message to his former colleagues.

Bringing the beloved character of the caffeine-obsessed bookworm Rory Gilmore to life in the cult dramedy "Gilmore Girls," Alexis Bledel captured the hearts of legions of viewers in the early aughts. Over the years, her quick-witted, fast-talking iconic role has only gained more popularity as the show reached global audiences when it landed on Netflix. That eventually led to a 2016 four-part revival, "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life." The reboot further cemented Amy Sherman-Palladino's brainchild as a quintessential nostalgia watch. Bledel has since appeared in several movies and shows, including her Emmy-winning portrayal of Emily Malek in the highly acclaimed drama "The Handmaid's Tale" and her role in the forever-beloved Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.

The live-action Titans series has been flawed from the get-go by presenting us with a Dick Grayson that the writers woefully misunderstand. There is no comic book creator who ever depicted Grayson in this manner so it sets the wrong tone. Its low-budget when created for the short-lived DC Universe streaming service didn’t help.
And yet, it has staggered through three seasons, with a fourth now streaming on HBO Max. Just last week, Warner Home Entertainment released Titans: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray (no DVD or 4K).

Not too many series make it to five seasons and those that do often feel like they've run out of gas by the time they get there. It's incredibly rare for a show's final season to be its best and yet, that's somehow the case with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spinoff, "Angel." After a strong, but largely episodic freshman outing, the series evolved into a truly great show in its 2nd and 3rd seasons, expanding on Angel's own mythology and exploring the complexities of what it means to fight an unwinnable battle. Things fell apart with season 4, which, despite having its moments, was far too serialized for its own good and also suffered from creatives whose focus was majorly split.
"Angel" is all about redemption, so what better season could there be than the one in which the show redeems itself? Thanks to a major paradigm shift, the spinoff returned revitalized for its fifth season,...

Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.
Perhaps the biggest revelation was Angel (David Boreanaz) himself. A broody hunk who was far more interesting when he actually went evil, Buffy's former beau was...

If you spent any time observing the chaos of the Sterling Cooper offices, then it's probably hard to look at Jon Hamm and not immediately flashback to his days as the suave ad-man with a laundry list of issues. Over the course of seven seasons, "Mad Men" tangled with the impossible task of unpacking the inner life of Don Draper, who proved to be an alcoholic, a serial womanizer, a terrible father, an even worse husband, an abusive boss ... and yet, a sympathetic character.
The magic of "Mad Men" was multifaceted — partially a product of series creator Matthew Weiners's writing and directing, but also successful in a way that wouldn't have been possible without many brilliant performance from the likes of Hamm and his former co-stars, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones, Christina Hendricks, and Kiernan Shipka, to name a few. Although "Mad Men" was a show that paid a lot of attention to detail, it did mess up on occasion. For instance, the writing on the sign on the Sterling Cooper building in the early seasons is in the Gil Sans font, a font that was not in popular use until the seventies! Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder. But for the most part, it's a show that successfully immerses its viewers in the crazy world of the sixties, with the clothes, slang, furniture, and the characters' values all consistently era-appropriate.
That pursuit of full immersion extended into the casting of the extras on the show, who also needed to look like believable upper-class people of the time. This created some problems for the casting directors, because it was often hard to find suitable actors in Los Angeles who met showrunner Matthew Weiner's particular standards.

Rob Schroeder’s sci-fi-tinged debut feature nests a lot of plots inside but doesn’t really add them up
A nocturnal traveller caught in a freaky menage a trois; an isolated mistress to a powerful senator; a technician in an experimental facility who seems to feed lines to characters in the other dramas. Rob Schroeder’s sci-fi-tinged feature debut expends much effort arranging these nested realities in a furiously scrambled film that makes you feel like you’re the test subject in Inception’s dream machine – and one who’s sniffed a few tubes of Bostik before bedtime. It’s a brave storyteller’s gambit, but there’s something finally underwhelming and convoluted about Ultrasound once it deigns to join the dots.

"Driving home late at night during a heavy rainstorm, Glen experiences car trouble. Near where his car gets stuck, he spots a house, knocks on the door and is greeted by an oddly friendly middle-aged man, Arthur, and his younger wife, Cyndi. The strange couple pours him a drink, and then more drinks, followed by an unexpected offer that Glen can’t refuse. Elsewhere, a young woman, Katie, is feeling emotionally weighed down by a secret romantic arrangement that feels like a textbook case of gaslighting. And at the same time, in a nondescript research facility, medical professional Shannon begins questioning her role in a bizarre experiment, fearing that she’s doing more harm than good."

1. “Bridgerton” Season 2 (available March 25)
Why Should I Watch? Shondaland’s hit period drama returns in March with a second season focused on Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the eldest of the high-society family’s offspring, who’s searching for his ideal partner. But Anthony’s idea of the perfect bride has little to do with true love, even though his standards remain astronomically high, so when he sets his sights on Edwina (Charithra Chandran), her sister Kate (Simone Ashley) does everything she can to nix the ill-fated romance. Get ready for a heated love triangle sure to set fire to a few of fancy gowns.
Bonus Reason: “Bridgerton” was nominated for 12 Emmys in its first well-received season, and Netflix reported the hourlong soap netted enough viewers to rank as the streamer’s second most-watched series of all time. Still, questions linger about the show’s long-term viability. Breakout star Regé-Jean Page...
