Evil Dead Trap
Mix up your January Giallo viewing with Evil Dead Trap. Although its title invokes Evil Dead – and there’s a bit of Sam Raimi-esque kineticism in the camerawork – the 1988 Japanese film shares more in common with the lurid Italian thrillers: a mysterious killer, elaborate murder set pieces, gruesome violence, stylish cinematography, a dreamlike atmosphere, and an infectious synth score.
Upon receiving a graphic snuff film, a late-night TV host (Miyuki Ono) rallies a small production crew to investigate its origins at an abandoned military base. The story plays out in a manner that could be considered a slasher, but...

Actress-turned-filmmaker Devanny Pinn makes her directorial debut with The Black Mass, one of my favorite horror films of the year.
This gruesome and nasty slasher calls to mind serial killer thrillers of the past, including John McNaughton’s masterful Henry, and is now streaming on Screambox.
A true-crime thriller based on events in Florida during the winter of 1978, it unfolds over 24 hours and centers on a serial killer in the lead-up to his ultimate, deranged killing spree.
“Presenting a harrowing and unsettling portrayal of the twisted mind of a notorious murderer, Pinn also explores the devastating consequences of his violent actions on the victims and survivors alike,” FrightFest wrote out of its International Premiere.
Jeremy London (Mallrats) co-stars alongside genre veterans Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4), Susan Lanier (The Hills Have Eyes), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), Nicky Whelan (Halloween II), and Kathleen Kinmont...

When a filmmaker takes on a story based on the crimes committed by a real serial killer, they have to walk a fine line. If they cross that line, it can feel disrespectful to the victims… and can even seem like they’re glorifying the killer. That’s not something Devanny Pinn intends to do with her feature directorial debut a 1970s serial killer tale called Black Mass. Speaking with Rue Morgue, she revealed that Black Mass focuses on the victims rather than the killer.
Inspired by real events, Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978 when college girls were being stalked by a serial killer. Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle wrote the screenplay. Cast members include Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Michelle Romano (Escape From Ensenada), Kathleen Kinmont...

"If this film doesn't put you in your grave, you're already dead." Deranged Minds Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror creation called Inverted, which is premiering in Ohio at the end of this month. "Think you can survive the house of The Inverts?" It is described as a "psychedelic, grindhouse-esque slay-fest that feels like it would be the offspring of Rosemary's Baby and The Lord’s of Salem." If that sounds right up your alley, then give this trailer a look. The film follows an off-the-grid satanic cult in the 1970s that kidnap a diverse group of individuals to recruit for the Holy War against the second coming of Christ. The victims have a choice to join the family or fight to survive one of the most brutal satanic cults in the annals of American history... The Inverts. Wes Craven’s getting a 4K Ultra HD workout this year, what with his monster hit Scream arriving in 4K last month. This 1977 franchise-starter is a down & dirty slaughter-fest out in the desert, with bloody jeopardy its one and only reason for being. It can attest that it was quite a nail-biting experience in the theater, and we know this show has a legion of fans — think of the hundreds of films that imitate its concept. Starring Susan Lanier, Robert Houston, Martin Speer, Dee Wallace, Russ Grieve, John Steadman and Michael Berryman.

Other releases for November 9th include Mania Killer, Dead Fury: Unrated, and The Resonator: Miskatonic U.

Wes Craven’s Classic Original The Hills Have Eyes will be available from Arrow Video on 4K Ultra HD November 9th
The Lucky Ones Died First…
Horror master Wes Craven achieved critical and commercial success with the likes of Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street – but for many genre fans, the director’s seminal 1977 effort The Hills Have Eyes remains his masterpiece.

Stranded, the family find themselves at the mercy of a group of monstrous cannibals lurking in the surrounding hills. It's hard to believe now that it has been over a year since we lost Wes Craven, one of the all-time great horror filmmakers who knew better than most how to truly scare an audience. His special gift wasn't that he was the most polished of directors; with only a few exceptions (like Scream), his movies were mostly rough edges. I happen to like rough edges. No, Craven's talent was for zeroing in on our primal fears and realizing them onscreen. He didn't want to spook us with tricks and jump scares and he rarely wanted the horror to be "fun." He wanted to shake us to our cores. This was especially true in much of his early work, primarily The Last House on the Left, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Hills Have Eyes, out now in a stunning limited edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video.
The Hills Have Eyes is all rough edges.

Arrow Video digs its sharp talons into Wes Craven's dirt 'n' Bowie Knife slaughter-fest horror picture, yet another strange travel advisory not to go anywhere, 'cause strangers might be cannibals. But hey, the movie works, and like much of Craven's filmography, it sticks its neck way out into dangerous territory. Special Mention: C’est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog)
Written by André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde, Rémy Belvaux and Vincent Tavier
Directed by André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde
France, 1992
Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, and Benoît Poelvoorde set out to make their first feature film with little resources and little money. In the tradition of filmmakers who can’t afford much film stock, the trio settled for a faux-documentary-style approach – the result is a high-concept satire of media violence that would spoof documentaries by following around a fictitious sociopath named Ben as he exercises his lethal craft. While the cinematic tradition of presenting villains as suave, charming, attractive, and intelligent individuals is nothing new, Man Bites Dog was still ahead of its time. Much like the great Hitchcockian villains such as Joseph Cotten in Shadow of a Doubt, Ben is a man of action and ideas. He expounds on art,...

Cut! 2014
Director: David Rountree
Cast (In credits order): Sam Scarber , Dahlia Salem , David Banks , David Rountree , William McNamara , Gabrielle Stone , Suze Lanier-Bramlett , Chris Moir, Allen Maldonado, Rosie Garcia
Cut! is a satire of the indie horror "industry" and a clever, dark parody of indie horror films that both embraces and sends up the clichés that we have come to expect from straight to DVD horror. It is also a very good movie that ingeniously disguises itself as a very bad one.
Travis is a manager at a studio warehouse with an encyclopedic knowledge of horror, who dreams of making a horror movie, but despite the wealth of resources around him, can't seem to come up with the resources to make his dreams come true. His friend and coworker Lane is an unstable ex-con with a penchant for pushing people's buttons.

Actor and music video director David Rountree (XXX, State Of The Union) has found his way behind the camera on Cut!, his feature length directorial debut. Rountree is wearing many hats on the Psycho Rock Productions picture, also serving as actor, co-writer (with David Banks), producer, and editor in a picture that takes filmmaking into very real, very scary, territory.
The film stars Sam Scarber, Dahlia Salem, David Banks, Gabrielle Stone, Suze Lanier-Bramlett, Chris Moir, Allen Maldonado, and Rosie Garcia. The special make up effects are by Brittany Duncan.
Synopsis (courtesy Psycho Rock):
“The apparent is never the truth as an ex-con and aspirant filmmaker set out to manufacture a horror film by scaring people for real; however, when it goes too far and someone actually dies, the pair decide that killing for real on film is the way to make a truly terrifying movie.”

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star - Nick Swardson, Don Johnson, Christina Ricci
Contagion - Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law
Warrior - Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton
Movie of the Week
Warrior
The Stars: Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton
The Plot: The youngest son (Hardy) of an alcoholic former boxer (Nolte) returns home, where he’s trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament — a path that puts the fighter on a collision corner with his older brother (Edgerton).
The Buzz: The world is pretty big, and there are a lot of folks out there busy populating it, so I guess it stands to reason that similar stories would crop up, even if they’re both insanely inspirational in their against-all-odds/too-good-to-be-true essence. I am, of course, nodding to the obvious similarities between last year’s (phenomenal...
