ABC has set Chelsea Handler and Marla Gibbs to guest star in Episode 7 of “Not Dead Yet” Season 2.

“Not Dead Yet” stars Gina Rodriguez as Nell, a journalist who takes a job writing obituaries at the SoCal Independent and soon gains the ability to see and speak to ghosts. The episode featuring Handler and Gibbs, which airs in late March, sees Lexi (Lauren Ash) and Duncan (Brad Garrett) spend a weird version of quality time at the newspaper’s softball game.

Handler will play Sharon Darynson, the owner of the rival news station to the SoCal Independent and the long-time nemesis to Duncan Rhoades (Brad Garrett). While everyone else runs in fear of Duncan, Sharon refuses to be intimidated by him.

Gibbs — the mother of Angela E. Gibbs, who stars in “Not Dead Yet” as Cricket — will play Cricket’s mother, Nana Sugar, who becomes one of Nell’s (Gina Rodriguez) obituary subjects.

The acclaimed HBO series created by Mike White has announced six new cast members for its highly anticipated third season. The show announced this morning on social media that Season 3 of Max/Universal TV hit comedy will premiere this spring.

Production on the new season was halted in May due to the writers strike. The Emmy-winning series centers on an aging comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and an up-and-coming writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder) who are writing together. 

Hacks was created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, who serve as showrunners.

Production on Season 3 of Hacks, which started shortly after Thanksgiving of 2022 and resumed after the holiday break in January of 2023, was previously paused in February when Smart underwent a successful heart procedure. It resumed in mid-March before shutting down again in May because of the work stoppage.

A pair of ABC comedies, as well as a whole lot of unscripted content, have just been renewed by the network for the 2023-24 TV season.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney-owned broadcast has renewed Roseanne spinoff The Conners for a sixth season and freshman comedy Not Dead Yet for a sophomore season. The two shows join fellow comedy series Abbott Elementary on the schedule. The rest of ABC's renewals were for its unscripted programming with America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Idol, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Shark Tank all confirmed to return next season. A series order was also handed to Drew Goddard's pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson.

According to sources, production will be on pause for the duration of the work stoppage.

It is hard for any scripted series to shoot without writing showrunners on set. This is especially true for Hacks as writing is at the heart of the show — it centers on an aging comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and an up-and-coming writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder) who are writing together. Hacks was created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, who serve as showrunners. According to WGA rules, members cannot provide any writing services, including script revisions during filming, while a strike is going on.

Updated: Hacks star Jean Smart has taken to social media to reveal she’s recovering from a recent successful heart procedure.

Production on Season 3 of HBO Max/Universal TV hit Hacks, which started in early January, has been paused as Smart is healing. It is expected to resume on or around March 13.

“February is American Heart Month – a time when the nation spotlights heart health, so it feels important to share with all of you that I am recovering from a recent successful heart procedure,” she wrote on instagram. “I am fortunate to have excellent care and support from family and friends while I continue to recuperate. Please listen to your body and talk to your doctor – I’m very glad I did!”

Smart did not specify the type of heart procedure she underwent. No additional information has been provided.

Gina Rodriguez is getting a visitor from the other side.

The Jane the Virgin vet stars in ABC’s new comedy Not Dead Yet — premiering this Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8:30/7:30c — as Nell Serrano, a journalist who moves back to the States from London after a broken engagement. Nell gets a job at the local newspaper where she used to work, but rather than picking up where she left off, Nell is assigned to the lowly obituary beat. And the gig comes with an unexpected and not entirely welcome perk: the people Nell is writing about appear to her as ghosts!

ABC’s new sitcom has a decent enough premise and a winsome lead performance. But it seems to struggle to get out of its own way, exhibiting a fundamental clumsiness that’s off-putting — as if the show itself needed another pass before making it to the air.

To wit: We’re told in blurts of exposition that Gina Rodriguez’s Nell has started work at a Southern California newspaper after a crushing breakup left her alone and broke. Ambitious and not without a healthy sense of pride, Nell is at first disappointed to have been placed on the obituaries desk; she comes to be outright destabilized, as the ghosts of those about whom she’s writing haunt her, at least until she sends in her copy.

Notionally, these hauntings are meant to give Nell a greater perspective on her life, and the ways in which she ought to pull herself together.

She will play a new character, Sam, in the project based on Alexandra Potter’s 2020 book Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up. Sam, who is a colleague of Rodriguez’s Nell, is part of the retooling of the single-camera comedy, which now is leaning more heavily into the workplace, with the female-friendship storyline from the pilot phased out. As a result, Jessica St. Clair and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who played Nell’s girlfriends Annabel and Fiona in the pilot, did not continue on the series.

The streaming service cites a new daily high for the series on the day of its Season 2 premiere.

It was 125 above its series premiere, which is a great sign that new people found the show in-between seasons.

HBO Max is going back to Vegas — and presumably, L.A.

The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has renewed the Emmy-winning comedy series Hacks for a third season. The series starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder recently wrapped its critically praised sophomore run and is currently working the Emmy FYC campaign beat.

“We congratulate Hacks’ extraordinarily gifted executive producers and cast, and our partners at Universal Television. We are overjoyed at the audience and press response to the new season, and glad to give viewers more of this gorgeous, hilarious, moving show,” said Sarah Aubrey, who heads originals for HBO Max.

Smart earned an Emmy win for her role as an aging Vegas comedian who teams with an unlikely 30-something writer as they both look to reinvent themselves. The series, from Comcast-backed Universal Television, hails from fellow Emmy winners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky.

“Hacks” has been renewed for Season 3 at HBO Max.

The news comes two weeks after the Season 2 finale, which debuted on the streamer on June 2. Season 2 debuted on HBO Max on May 12. The first season consisted of 10 episodes while the second consisted of eight.

Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels will be back for more stand-up stories after HBO Max renewed Hacks for a third season.

The move comes less than two weeks after the critically acclaimed comedy series ended its second season on the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer.

“I don’t think Marcus would have done anything differently,” Carl Clemons-Hopkins shares about how their character Marcus in HBO Max’s “Hacks” handled the events of the first season finale. After four years, Adult Swim is finally bringing back its biblical comedy “Black Jesus.”

The comedy will return for Season 3 on Friday, Sept. 20. It last aired in November 2015.

The scripted live-action comedy features an African-American Jesus Christ living in modern-day Compton, California, on a mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with his small group of followers. In Season 3, Black Jesus continues his mission to spread love and kindness in the neighborhood, encounters a local caped crusader, and draws the attention of the Pope himself.

Can't wait until Monday (Feb. 3) for the release of "The Fosters: Girls United," the web series spinoff of the ABC Family hit? Well, you're in luck.

Zap2it has the exclusive first look at the web series' first of five episodes ahead of their release. The self-contained webisode series follows the residents of the Girls United group home, where Callie's (Maia Mitchell) been ordered to stay. In this first episode, Gabi (Hayley Kiyoko) goes missing and Girls United counselor Michelle (Angela Gibbs) calls a meeting to ask if the girls know anything about where she may have run off to.

You won't have to wait long to find out what happens next. All five webisodes will be made available at once online on ABC Family's official YouTube channel on Monday at 10 p.m. Et/7 p.m. Pt immediately following an all-new episode of "The Fosters."

"The Fosters" is getting a spinoff! Well, sort of. The ABC Family drama is getting its very own web series, which will focus on the group girls' home where foster kid Callie (Maia Mitchell) is now living.

On the show, Rosie O'Donnell plays Rita, the group home leader, but she won't appear in "The Fosters: Girls United." Instead, the web series will follow Callie and the other girls in the home, played by Daffany Clark, Cherinda Kincherlow, Annamarie Kenoyer, Alicia Sixtos, Hayley Kiyoko and Angela Gibbs, when one of the girls goes missing.

"It's completely different. It's like its own pilot, almost," star Cierra Ramirez tells Zap2it of the group home scenes during a recent visit to the show's Los Angeles set.

Beginning with The Student Nurses in 1970 and culminating with The Candy Stripe Nurses in ’74, these softcore sex films appealed to a broad audience and helped start an entire subgenre: the young nympho professionals. Thanks to the boxoffice success of The Student Nurses, (the first title ever released by New World Pictures), films surrounding the sexual exploits of stewardesses, teachers and every other female-dominated occupation became ubiquitous throughout the decade.

What set the Corman Nurse titles apart from the rest was the surprising social and political commentary that was often intertwined within the sexual escapades. Indeed, several of the nurse films touched upon such weighty issues as abortion, civil rights, pollution, drug addiction and group therapy. Corman was a shrewd businessman and knew what kind of hot button topics would appeal to the young exploitation audience.

He would essentially give young filmmakers free reign with the script, as long as they delivered certain non-negotiable elements.
