Astoria, played by Simone Missick, has taken on new responsibilities in his absence. ‘Government Cheese’ Review: David Oyelowo’s Quirky Apple Comedy Is Undone by a Conventional Antihero

Typically, brevity in television is a gift. There are always exceptions, but in the age of streaming bloat, second-screen experiences, and TV being reduced to content, clocking a tight running time is an early indicator of efficiency, confidence, or (somewhat conversely) ambition. “Government Cheese” is a different kind of exception — an aberration not because it thrives while blowing past its adopted episode lengths, but because it’s so condensed it’s barely even there.
Despite the 43-minute premiere being the longest episode of its 10-part first season, “Government Cheese” doesn’t know what to do with the little time it has, and the series’ aimlessness grows more evident with each mercifully fleeting entry. By the time the last two episodes roll around, it’s as if co-showrunners Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr have given up on their own show. There’s no hook to lure viewers back for a potential...

Family reunions can be messy, but “Government Cheese” takes it to a whole new level. This surrealist comedy from Apple TV+ throws David Oyelowo into the chaos as Hampton Chambers, a man fresh out of prison whose homecoming doesn’t go quite as planned. His wife (Simone Missick) and kids have built an unconventional family unit in his absence, and his return sends their world into a tailspin. Government Cheese introduces us to Hampton Chambers, a man emerging into freedom from a life marred by crime and marked by extraordinary ambition. Set against the backdrop of late‑1960s San Fernando Valley—a period where social change and counterculture stirred deep currents—this series offers a richly textured stage for a story that weaves personal redemption with unexpected absurdity.
Hampton, having served time for lesser transgressions, returns to a family transformed by his absence and driven by its own dreams. His aspirations, which include the quirky invention of a self-sharpening drill, are met with a reality in which familial bonds and cultural expectations are continuously renegotiated.
The narrative carries hints of surreal humor interspersed with poignant family dynamics, channeling energy reminiscent of a parallel cinematic tradition found in both globally acclaimed auteurs and the spirited experimentation of modern Bollywood parallel cinema.

Even at the peak of Peak TV, the medium’s gatekeepers were resistant to making full-fledged commitments to surrealism and absurdity. But that hasn’t stopped some weird curios from sneaking through.
There have been long-running favorites like Fargo, critical hits like I’m a Virgo, cult treasures like Lodge 49 and Baskets, plus a bunch of quickly forgotten oddities like Apple TV+’s Hello Tomorrow! and The Big Door Prize and Sunny or Amazon’s Mammals. These misfit outliers in a medium generally designed to reach the widest audience possible mostly haven’t been breakouts, but there’s a good chance that each show I mentioned found some small audience that felt blessed to have been granted a series that spoke to them plus maybe a dozen other people. There’s no point in having art if everything is a Law & Order or medical procedural and nothing features a...

Plot: A surrealist family comedy set in 1969 San Fernando Valley that tells the story of the Chambers, a quirky family pursuing lofty and seemingly impossible dreams, beautifully unfettered by the realities of the world. When Hampton Chambers is released from prison, his long-awaited family reunion doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. During his absence, Hampton’s wife, Astoria, and sons, Einstein and Harrison, have formed an unconventional family unit, and Hampton’s return spins their world into chaos.
Review: The aesthetics of filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Joel and Ethan Coen are unique, original, and ultimately divisive for audiences. Love or hate them, you cannot deny that Anderson and The Coen Brothers offer something few filmmakers can replicate. Ever stumbled upon a show that feels like a weird binge-worthy project you can’t overlook? Well, that’s how I felt when I first heard about Apple TV+’s surrealist comedy series, Government Cheese. Set in the summer of 1969, San Fernando Valley, the show follows Hampton Chambers, an ex-convict, trying to rebuild his life and fit in with his family after prison.
But this isn’t your typical redemption story. With surreal twists, unexpected humor, and a touch of satire, this show seems both entertaining and thought-provoking to me. Plus, the title itself—Government Cheese—piqued my curiosity. What does it mean? Why cheese? I’m all in to find out.
So, here are three main aspects that skyrocketed my excitement for this quirky series.

Government Cheese takes an unusual angle on a very well-covered historical moment.
Apple TV+’s surrealist comedy series from creators Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr is set in the summer of 1969, the tumultuous time of the moon landing, Woodstock, the Manson murders, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, etc. But none of that is in the show. Instead, the show is tightly focused on the personal story of the Chambers family, a Black family living in the San Fernando Valley. They’re not so concerned with the tumult of the outside world, because their lives — their jobs, relationships, and their search for God and meaning — are tumultuous enough.
The project’s different vision of the era is what drew star and executive producer David Oyelowo to it. Earlier in his career, Oyelowo appeared in a trio of hit films — The Help, Lee Daniels' The Butler, and Selma — that deal...

As always, I’ve put together a list of the top programming events coming to TV and streaming each day this week. Check out my selections below, and see what kind of intriguing options there are heading into the Easter weekend.

David Oyelowo is still determined to take to the skies in The Return of the Rocketeer, a sequel to the 1991 cult classic The Rocketeer. First announced in 2021, the film is to be produced by, and possibly star, Oyelowo, and is to center around a retired member of the Tuskegee Airmen who takes up the high-flying mantle of the Rocketeer. Oyelowo spoke about the project with Collider's Christina Radish while promoting his new Apple TV+ series, Government Cheese.
Says Oyelowo of the long-in-development sequel:
"I’m definitely still trying to get it done, especially when you see what’s happening to the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen as it pertains to what’s going on in the country politically at the moment. To get that film made is definitely something I’m very, very focused on. One of the hardest things with any project you’re developing is when there’s regime change,...

HBO's Lanterns series is still ever-expanding after recently adding Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner into the fold. Per Deadline, Lawman: Bass Reeves star Chris Coy is now the latest addition to the upcoming Green Lantern drama series in a guest-starring role. He's set to embody a mysterious new character by the name of Waylon Sanders, described as "an intelligent survivor or a nervous truck driver." If that wasn't confusing enough, his real name and age remain an enigma, and he's said to be "unbound by the laws of nature." It's unclear what role he'll play and whether he'll be a friend or a foe to Lantern recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).
Coy boards a group that has grown significantly in recent weeks, with Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jason Ritter among those on board thus far.

Dennis Quaid has cast doubt on the possibility of The Parent Trap ever getting a sequel. The 1998 film stars Quaid opposite the late Natasha Richardson, with Lindsay Lohan playing both of the children — Hallie Parker and Annie James — who were raised separately but are now trying to bring their parents back together. The way the film portrays family dynamics by separating identical twins at birth and never mentioning to one that they even have a twin, only to use them to reunite the parents, was viewed as controversial by many upon release. During a recent interview with Business Insider to talk about his new project, Happy Face, Quaid poured cold water on the possibility of him ever returning for a sequel to the 1998 film:
"There had been some talk, but it would be impossible to do now... No, and nobody else does. I don't think we'd have the heart for it.

As always, Apple TV+ continues to prove that its series are some of the best out there compared to other streaming platforms. While they don’t always offer heaps of shows like other streaming services, they never fail to deliver top-notch viewing experiences. With the season finale of its hit show, Severance, now in the bag, subscribers are undoubtedly looking for something else to sink their teeth into.
Luckily, Apple TV+ has quite a few worthy replacements to tide viewers over for the time being. That being said, it doesn’t look like April offers anything quite as thrilling or unique as the bedrock show. Nevertheless, there’s a lot for audiences to enjoy. With plenty of drama and a bit of humor, the platform’s latest shows scheduled to arrive next month are definitely ones that viewers won’t want to miss.

Despite extremely poor box office returns, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s latest superhero movie has become a major hit on streaming. Taylor-Johnson stars alongside Russell Crowe and Christopher Abbott in Kraven the Hunter, the 2024 Sony Marvel film that debuted in December and grossed only $61 million at the global box office against a $110 million budget, making it one of the biggest flops of the year. However, the film recently premiered on Netflix more than two weeks ago, and not only did it quickly become one of the more popular movies on the platform, but it has weathered the storm of new arrivals to hold down its spot. Kraven the Hunter earned a “rotten” 15% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and general audiences reviewed the film at 73%.
Richard Wenk, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway all contributed to the script for Kraven the Hunter, and J.C. Chandor directed the film. Chandor made his directorial debut 15 years ago on Margin Call,...

After breaking records on Broadway, Denzel Washington is set to play Othello in a brand new feature film adaptation.
Denzel Washington has already brought us one memorable turn as a doomed Shakespearean hero in recent years, with his take on the ambitious and violent usurper Macbeth in Apple’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth collaborating with director Joel Coen.
However, following a highly successful opening on Broadway which has broken the record for the highest opening week gross ever, it looks as though his stage version of Othello may be making the same transition.
This isn’t entirely new news, given that Washington publicly introduced the idea of playing Othello back in November on The Today Show while out and about promoting Gladiator II. We wondered at the time if that meant that Washington was being lined up to take the title role opposite Daniel Craig in Barbara Broccoli’s planned take on the play,...

Denzel Washington may be bringing his version of “Othello” to the screen.
Washington stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Broadway play, which has been in previews since February 24. “Othello” opened March 23 and runs through June 8. The play already broke the record for the highest weekly gross ever by earning $2.8 million in its second week. Now, director Kenny Leon is teasing that the historic Shakespeare retelling could lead to a film.
Leon told The Hollywood Reporter that there has “absolutely” been talks with Washington about adapting the play into a feature. Leon previously has collaborated with Washington on two other plays, “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Fences,” which Washington then later directed the film version of. When asked if Gyllenhaal would also potentially reprise his role for an “Othello” film, Leon said, “I would hope so, absolutely, that’s what I would hope would happen.”

Steady character actors are often some of the most unsung heroes of film and television, providing a consistent presence that can anchor a narrative and provide easy visual language for an audience to latch onto. Occasionally, some character actors are able to transcend to leading performances themselves, showing their abilities beyond being a more background player in a film or TV show.
Walton Goggins made his mark playing small roles in huge films, until he began taking more leading roles in television in the late 2010s and 2020s. His performances show his range as both a dramatic and comedic actor, and prove that an actor can have a huge impact in even the smallest of roles.

Christopher Nolan is one of the most respected directors of the 21st century. While he technically made his debut with Following in 1998, Nolan's breakout work is largely considered to be Memento, which was released in 2000. This movie earned Nolan his first Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, based on the script he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Memento is perhaps one of Nolan's most classic examples of playing with time as a storytelling device, a motif that would become a signature tool throughout his work.
Memento was well-received, and Nolan's filmography has developed growing clout over the years. The director's first movie to be nominated for Best Picture ended up being Inception. From there, multiple other Nolan films would be nominated for Oscars, including Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. The latter film would go on to become Nolan's first movie to win Best Picture, and also earned the auteur an award for Best Director.

The annual South by Southwest Festival in Austin showcases some of the most creative and ingenious movies and television shows set to be released to the public. The 1960s were a time of contradiction. The fight for civil rights often coincided with the counterculture hippie movement, but as this occurred, other forces tried to uphold the status quo. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in science and art changed the world for the better. Government Cheese, a new series from Apple TV+, tries to marry this world of contradictions. Visiting the era through broadly comedic events and some surrealist aspects, Government Cheese delivers some interesting ideas. While the execution does not always land, there are enough highlights to keep the audience engaged.

It looks like just playing an angel isn’t enough for Good Omens star Michael Sheen. His human mask has slipped and his true angelic self is shining bright, as he’s using £100,000 of his own money to clear £1 million of debt for 900 people.
The Twilight and Staged star told the BBC that he doesn’t even know who his top secret debt heist has helped.
He added: “I knew where they would live and I knew the kind of debt it was but I would never know who they are and I still don’t know who they are.”
How has he done it? By secretly starting a debt acquisition company, which allowed him to purchase secondary debt, or debt that is bundled and sold on from one firm to another, in a lucrative market worth billions. He explains how it all works in this video on Facebook.

Yellowstone has already created two spinoff series, 1923 and 1883, but there still doesn't seem to be enough bingeable shows set in the West. Luckily, Paramount+ has a hidden gem on the streaming service, which should give 1923 fans an extra show to watch. The series, called Lawmen: Bass Reeves, follows a historic U.S. marshal as he arrests outlaws west of the Mississippi River. The show was produced by Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone and 1923, and is quite similar to the rest of Sheridan's work.
