As movies like Bone Tomahawk and Tremors 4 have proven, horror and Westerns are two great tastes that taste great together. I always like to hear that another horror / Western blend is in the works – so I was glad to see The Hollywood Reporter announce that the folk horror thriller The Wolf and the Lamb, which is set “during the western expansion of the 1870s,” is coming our way. Cassandra Scerbo of the Sharknado franchise and Adrianne Palicki of The Orville star in the film, which is currently in production, with filming taking place in Montana.
The Wolf and the Lamb marks the feature writing and directing debut of Michael Schilf. Scerbo is taking on the role of a widowed school teacher searching for her only son, who is the latest child to go missing in a tight-knit mining camp. But when the son miraculously returns, he is more monster than man.

Truth or Dare‘s Cassandra Scerbo, John Wick actor Adrianne Palicki, Hostile‘s Q’orianka Kilcher and Braveheart‘s Angus Macfadyen have boarded The Wolf and the Lamb, a folk horror/thriller from writer and director Michael Schilf.
The genre pic takes place during the western expansion of the 1870s and is shooting in Montana. "One ring to rule them all." No, this isn't J.R.R. Tolkien's universe; it's a sci-fi B-movie starring Josh Hutcherson and Morgan Freeman. 57 Seconds — not 56, not 58 — is their latest project, about an unlikely duo occupying a futuristic society where pharmaceutical CEOs rule the world and time-traveling jewelry might just save (or corrupt) civilization as we know it. Sound familiar? 57 Seconds has familiar themes that weave together a rather thin plot about exposing the dark truths behind the most powerful men on Earth.
Time Travel with an Investigative Twist
Many fans will remember Josh Hutcherson from the beloved Hunger Games films, The Kids Are All Right, and The Disaster Artist. These are all great movies, and to that end, it seems like 57 Seconds is a bit of step back for the actor. Here he plays Franklin, an investigative journalist and blogger who narrates the tale in your typical expositional fashion,...

Josh Hutcherson and Morgan Freeman learn how to travel through time in the first trailer for 57 Seconds. The upcoming science fiction adventure from Highland Film Group is directed by Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), and is coming to theaters and in September.
Time travel has always been an interesting subject for movies and tv shows to explore, and it's been present in mainstream and independent projects since always. But the most interesting thing about Cundieff's new film is that the time travel experience is limited to 57 seconds, so how much can actually be changed in that little time? A lot, apparently.
Hutcherson and Freeman will be joined by Lovie Simone, Greg Germann, Sammi Rotibi, Lucius Baston, and Aaron Jay Rome in this action-packed adventure. Here's the official synopsis and trailer:
"Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) star in this heart-racing action thriller.

Time is a precious thing. We’re all at the mercy of its perpetual rhythm and are helpless against its march toward oblivion. Still, what if someone invented a device to help you change the past? What would you do if you could return to nearly a minute before you made a critical mistake? What’s to stop you from succeeding at everything you do? Can you resist the urge to undo every misstep along your life’s journey? Franklin Fausti is about to find out in the new 57 Seconds trailer.

"This is not about your sister, this is about power." Highland Film Group has revealed an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi thriller film titled 57 Seconds, from a filmmaker named Rusty Cundieff. He has mostly done lots of TV work, and some strange genre films, but this is one of his first major feature films in years. Here's the logline pitch: When a tech blogger lands an interview with a tech guru and stops an attack on him, he finds a mysterious ring that takes him back 57 seconds into the past. The ring gimmick is a bit cheesy, and the script is a time travel concept to explore the idea of "going back and redoing things" until you get them right. Which seems to a big way for him to learn some lessons in this, along with realizing 57 seconds is not a long time... Josh Hutcherson co-stars with Morgan Freeman,...

While recent time loop movies like Palm Springs have presented a rather bright and bubbly approach to the concept, The Obituary of Tunde Johnson takes a different path. Directed by Ali LeRoi, the drama follows a Nigerian-American teenager who is pulled over by police, shot to death, and then immediately awakens to relive the same day. Starring Steven Silver, Spencer Neville, Nicola Peltz, Sammi Rotibi, and David James Elliott, the TIFF premiere will now arrive this month and the first trailer has landed.
Jared Mobarak said in his review, “While not in control of the response, Tunde Johnson (Steven Silver) does control the conversation when deciding to come out as gay to his wealthy, Nigerian-born parents the night of his secret boyfriend’s (Spencer Neville’s Soren) birthday. He sits them down, diverts their attention from the busy intellectual discourse that runs through their heads, and says his peace. He...

Eighteen-year-old Tunde Johnson (Steven Silver) isn’t consciously able to explain why he wakes up gasping every day. Every day is the same day, May 28, and every night, he’s murdered by the cops and “The Obituary of Tunde Johnson” is read anew: an upper-middle class, gay high schooler destined to be shot by jumpy officers who don’t know him at all. The interesting crinkle in Ali LeRoi’s coiling drama is that (Besides, notes LeRoi, the first time he dies, he does everything perfectly, placing both hands visibly on the wheel as though he’s been expecting danger his whole life.)
Instead, LeRoi (who created the TV series “Everybody Hates Chris”) and screenwriter Stanley Kalu chooses to wipe the majority of his memories, freeing Tunde to spend this slick, chillwave-injected film embracing life instead of dodging death. But death is coming from someone’s nervous trigger fingers and...

The narrative elements take center stage in Mars season 2, but the inclusion of non-fiction parallels is still a unique aspect of the show.

When Nat Geo’s Mars first hit the scene, it was praised for its successful blending of speculative fiction and documentary-style non-fiction, but it was also criticized for the imbalance between an understated story of the future and a much more interesting look at the present-day state of our Mars aspirations. Viewers may be happy to hear that when the series returns on November 12, they’ll notice a shift towards a much more dramatic tale of love and loss on the red planet, but with that change of focus comes the occasional deficiency in the illustrative examples from our own situation on Earth.

National Geographic has released the trailer for Season 2 of the event series “Mars,” executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. The new episodes take place on a newly colonized planet, and frankly, the technologically impressive settings and state of adventure look ideal compared to the political mess of paranoia here on Earth.
Season 2 picks up several years into the future after the Daedalus crew, a group of carefully selected astronauts, finished building the ultimate colony on Mars called Olympus Town. The new episodes, set to premiere in Spring 2018, examines the impact that humans would have on the Red Planet.
Produced by Imagine Entertainment and RadicalMedia, “Mars” also examines the potential consequences that the planet would have on humans, such as the scientific and personal detriments. Through scripted drama, special effects, and documentary sequences, National Geographic continues to transport audiences to a different world with scientifically literate programming.

The new movie was directed by Franck Khalfoun, with Lustig on board as producer, and is written by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur.

While aware that there is another Maniac review here on Nerdly, I felt the urge to review it myself after sitting down with the movie for the second time and being filled with the need to unleash words.
The original Maniac hit our screens in 1980 with Joe Spinell sludging up our televisions with his disturbingly dirty portrayal of Frank, the scalp obsessed nut-job with a heart of mould. It was a great horror movie with a fantastic lead performance and top notch gore courtesy of the maestro of visceral explosions, Tom Savini, who also has a small but memorable part in the original film.

Elijah Wood Talks Maniac, available now on VOD and in select theaters
Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill. A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present day L.A., Maniac is a re-boot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made, an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiralling nightmare of a killer and his victims.
Considered an icon of his generation at only 32 years of age, Elijah Wood literally goes inside the mind of Frank, the killer with an appetite for scalps. Though shot mostly through the character's Pov, we caught up...

Only this time it’s Frodo’s turn to go on a homicidal trip!
Yes, everyone’s favourite hobbit Elijah Wood steps into the shoes of Joe Spinell as the deranged Frank, owner of a quasi-abandoned mannequin store and all-round creepy dude who, to the outside world, seems like a typical loner. Fans of the 1980 horror classic Maniac who think the upcoming remake may not be as gory as the original should put those fears to rest by watching an all-new extended 20-minute featurette about the making of the movie. Maniac director Franck Khalfoun, writer-producer Alexandre Aja, star Elijah Wood and makeup FX artist Mike McCarty take us behind-the-scenes and show off how some of these gruesome effects were created. We see that Elijah Wood's Frank actually takes the scalps off women, unlike the original which "held back" on some of the gorier moments, according to McCarty. We also examine Frank's weapons of choice, and much more from this bloody thriller, debuting on VOD and in New York theaters today, with a theatrical expansion to follow in the coming weeks.

Time to see what’s new with our mentally disturbed friend Elijah Wood aka Frank Zito, guys! We have the first six minutes of Franck Khalfoun‘s upcoming horror movie Maniac and as usual – we recommend you to check it out! Why? Well, ’cause we’re talking about the film which is written and produced by Alexandre Aja, and second – ’cause some great cast is involved in the whole thing…
So, as we previously reported, Maniac is the remake of William Lustig‘s brutal 1980 film of the same name which centers on a disturbed individual named Frank Zito, who becomes a ruthless serial killer.
This time, Elijah Wood plays a professional serial killer serial killer, while Nora Arnezeder stars as Anna, young artist terrorized by Wood as the killer/maniac.

Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," a Western-style film set in the south two years before the civil war, features a star-studded ensemble. "Django Unchained" opens in theaters on Christmas Day. One of the heaviest ensembles in a film this year, Django Unchained is Quentin Tarantino’s latest work. Quentin has always utilized a substantial number of actors in his films, and this film does the same. Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio headline this tale of Southern revenge. Franco Neri, the original Django, makes an appearance. James Russo and James Remar had a brief reunion during frigid filming in Lone Pine, California. Dennis Christopher, Don Johnson, Walton Goggins, Dana Gourrier, Nichole Galicia, Laura Cayouette, David Steen, Ato Essandoh, Sammi Rotibi, Clay Donahue Fontenot, Escalante Lundy and Miriam F. Glover, all joined Django Unchained when the production made its way to a warmer location: New Orleans,...

They will never understand… as long as you keep the secret! Huh! The original was good, the remake is a milestone. Well, not bad description at all! We have another poster and some new images from the upcoming Maniac movie, and I’m sure you’re going to enjoy. If you’re a sadist or something like that, ’cause Elijah Wood is one sick bastard in these pics. Frodo Baggins gone crazy, for sure!
So, as you already know, the movie comes from director Franck Khalfoun and is actually a remake of William Lustig‘s brutal 1980 film of the same name.
Alexandre Aja stands behind the script which, this time, centers on a guy named Frank, who develops a dangerous obsession with a young artist.
Now imagine Elijah Wood as Frank, and Nora Arnezeder as that young artist named Anna. Their friendship looks almost perfect…

An incomplete French teaser trailer, unfortunately. But what you do get (around 90 seconds) is pretty intense, it is in English, and more importantly, Elijah Wood is pretty wicked. Really, who knew Frodo Baggins could be so scary? The film is currently selling over at Cannes, so who knows when we’ll get the full trailer/teaser, but when we do get it we will update this post. Until then, this will just have to do. Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.
