The rhythm of late-night television changed back in 2017 when Donald Trump became President, forcing all of the talk shows to prepare for the dreaded 4 p.m. rewrite.
So, when Trump was reelected for a second term, it’s a challenge that all of the late-night shows know how to face.
The team behind The Daily Show says they’re already in “game shape” to handle it.
Desi Lydic, one of the show’s hosts alongside Jon Stewart, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper and Michael Kosta, was behind the desk earlier this month during “tariff week,” which saw the news change almost hourly. How do you handle a situation like that?

“Oh my god, with a lot of help from a lot of staff members and some opiates,” Lydic joked during Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety event. “[That] was a bit of a roller-coaster news week.

It’s been over a month since Elon Musk volunteered, then promptly un-volunteered, to appear as a guest on The Daily Show, following Jon Stewart’s impassioned, surprisingly bloody, takedown of Musk’s government cuts. And while the weeks may feel even longer in 2025 time, clearly Stewart hasn’t forgotten about this.
On the most recent episode of his podcast The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart, a listener wrote in to ask, “Hey John, whatever happened to Elon coming on The Daily Show?”
“Oh, he came on, and it was great. I thought It was a productive conversation,” Stewart joked.

“I guess we did a bid on Doge, and I obviously came up with all kinds of billions of dollars that we could save from subsidies and corporate things and blah, blah, blah. That was the real cost savings to me,” the host explained. “He said, ‘I'll come on...

While Nikki Glaser received high praise from critics, celebrities and fellow comedians like Jon Stewart, who tweeted “Nikki Glaser is very good at this,” for her opening monologue at the 2025 Golden Globes, Glaser recalls some stars were a bit nervous to be put on the spot by her.
Timothée Chalamet, in particular, nominated for his role in A Complete Unknown and who attended with girlfriend Kylie Jenner, seemed wary of being roasted. Because Glaser “loved his performance” in A Complete Unknown, she knew she wanted to make a joke about him in her monologue.
“That got back to him, and he was just going to skip my monologue and get there late, just so he didn’t have to deal with it,” Glaser said Wednesday during a panel discussion at the Time100 Summit. “I get it, because he’s there with his girlfriend who is already the subject of so many jokes.

It’s no surprise that the second episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2 is sparking a lot of reaction online.
For many fans of the video game series, the events that took place in Episode 2 – “Through the Valley” – was the one to look forward to or dread. In it, Joel (Pedro Pascal) stumbles across Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) while running to avoid a massive horde that has been dormant in the snow. She convinces him to come back to the nearby ski lodge where she and her friends are waiting for her – unfortunately the offer is anything but altruistic.
Once they get to the lodge and knock Dina (Isabella Merced) out, Abby gets down to what she came all this way for. She shoots Joel in the leg and then starts to beat him for an undetermined time, but long enough that even the rest of her friends are upset by it.

With Jon Stewart back in the saddle Monday nights and the “Best F**king News Team” sharing anchor duties the rest of the week, 'The Daily Show' has once again hit its stride, but as Michael Kosta recalls, the show was in a very different place a couple of years ago as it muddled through an uneven guest host period that had some on the show's staff shaking their heads.

It’s hard to imagine anyone but Jason Sudeikis as the endlessly optimistic Coach Ted Lasso, but believe it or not, he wasn’t the first pick for the role that would go on to define his career. Before Sudeikis laced up Lasso’s iconic sneakers, the part was reportedly offered to big names like Chris Pratt and John Oliver.
Thankfully, they passed, and the rest is history. Ted Lasso didn’t just become a hit AppleTV+ show, it became a cultural comfort blanket and a major milestone in Sudeikis’ career. So, weirdly enough, fans might owe a little gratitude to Pratt and Oliver for giving them the version of Coach Lasso people never knew they needed.
NBC almost cast someone else as Ted Lasso, here’s who they picked first!

Jon Stewart has no patience for President Donald Trump’s latest medical exam. On Monday, a White House physician declared that Trump was in “excellent” physical health and said that the president is 6 foot, 3 inches and 224 pounds.
“No. I’m going to say no to either of those numbers,” Stewart said on “The Daily Show” Monday night. “I don’t want to be that guy, but he has a front butt. I mean, we all get there. It’s fine. You can have it. But what’s with, ‘He is forged by Hephaestus?'”
The late night host jokingly asked what the secret is to Trump being a “medical marvel.” As an answer, he played a clip of a Fox News correspondent claiming that Trump’s sense of humor is the cause.
“Sense of humor decreases stress? Keeps you young looking?” Stewart incredulously asked. “If I may, just for schnicks,...

President Donald Trump’s refusal to return a Maryland man illegally deported to El Salvador, desire to deport U.S. citizens, and attack of free speech at universities and media outlets prompted Jon Stewart to compare Trump to his authoritarian counterparts.
In a game called “How Authoritarian Is We?,” Stewart dedicated Monday night’s Daily Show monologue to assessing how Trump’s garish decor at the Oval Office, sycophantic cabinet, and dubious physical exam add up alongside the likes of “your Putins, your Xis, your Anna Wintours.”

On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart took a more serious tone than usual as he slammed President Donald Trump for the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Stewart opened the segment by explaining the situation surrounding Garcia. According to the late-night pundit, Garcia is an “undocumented migrant from El Salvador” as well as a father and a husband to an American woman. But last month, he was suddenly deported to El Salvador and locked up in a “mega-prison” over an “administrative error,” according to the Justice Department. Stewart then informed the audience that Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele visited the White House on Monday, and joked that Garcia could catch a ride with him back to the States.
“You don’t even have to give Garcia the middle seat,” Stewart said. “I’m sure Garcia would just grab the wing and Tom Cruise it over here if he had to.

The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart dedicated tonight’s episode to playing a game called “How Authoritarian Is We?” highlighting President Donald Trump’s sycophantic cabinet and his taste for the opulent and absurd — and mocking the fact that he’s missing one crucial ingredient to being a good ol’ fashioned dictator.
“Luckily for us, the world is full of authoritarian leaders that we can measure Trump against: your Putins, your Xis, your Anna Wintours,” he prefaced.
Referencing Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s mistaken deportation to El Salvador, Stewart quipped, “I think the hosts of The View are about to get administratively errored.”
Aside from his policy, Stewart argued that authoritarianism also manifests itself in a certain type of aesthetic, donning his best Trump impression (hands and all) to make fun of the Oval Office’s golden cherub accents: “They’re angels. They visited me in the night and asked me to change my ways,...

John Oliver probably didn’t see this coming. The “Last Week Tonight” host appeared last week on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” where host Andy Cohen asked him about his kids’ TV diet. Oliver mentioned that “Bluey” and “Phineas and Ferb” are currently in heavy rotation at his house.
“Phineas and Ferb,” he raved, was “actually genuinely funny,” with “some good jokes in that.” But both Cohen and Oliver strangely didn’t know where “Phineas” actually runs — even though it’s been a Disney Channel staple since 2008. The best that Oliver could come up with: “I don’t know… PBS?”
Ooh, those are fighting words. “Phineas and Ferb” creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh weren’t having it. So the duo and their writers — currently working on the “Phineas” revival, set to drop this summer on Disney Channel and Disney+ — are humorously clapping back.

On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart went after President Donald Trump for downplaying the consequences of his widespread tariffs, which has sent the global economy into a tail spin.
In a segment labeled “Trade Wars,” in reference to the sci-fi classic “Star Wars,” Stewart opened with a series of news clips outlining the effects of Trump’s global tariffs, which officially go into effect Wednesday. They reported that the stock market has lost “more than $6.5 trillion dollars in value” in response to the tariffs. One economist called the drop an “economic armageddon.”
“This turmoil could have lasting effects on the global economy, on everyday Americans, and most worryingly, the stock portfolios of members of Congress,” Stewart said. “Mr. President, now is the time to soothe a worried nation!”

“Our economy is in the midst of a beautiful metamorphosis, turning from a simple caterpillar into a dead caterpillar” — so went Jon Stewart’s decidedly literary opening (giving Franz Kafka a run for his money as far as transformations go) during this week’s installment of The Daily Show.
The political comic and host naturally tackled the “Trade Wars,” as stylized on his show in Star Wars‘ signature font as seen above, and overlaid with its “Main Title” theme. Stewart unpacked President Donald Trump’s mixed messaging on the permanence vs. negotiation approach of his tariffs and the Republican Party’s staunch support of such a jumbled rollout.
Addressing Trump’s tweet about the so-called “Panican” party (“a new party based on Weak and Stupid People!” as Potus wrote), Stewart joked, “The genius who gave us classics like Sleepy Joe and Crooked Hillary, just sh– out, ‘You’re a Panican’? How about Hysterocrats?...

What Do We Know About the upcoming Dcu original series Lanterns? More thank you may think. The HBO series will be the first live-action project on television from James Gunn’s rebooted DC cinematic universe. With casting announcements, rumors, and more, we know a lot of what is to come. So, let’s jump in and discuss Lanterns.
We will see multiple Green Lanterns
While we met several members of the Green Lantern Corps in the Ryan Reynolds-led feature film, this new series is intentionally plural, as we will meet more than just Hal Jordan. According to James Gunn, Lanterns will center on Jon Stewart, who briefly appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in a non-speaking role. We also know that James Gunn’s longtime friend and collaborator Nathan Fillion is portraying Lanterns hero Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman movie and will potentially appear.

There’s not a lot that shocks Jon Stewart, but Donald Trump’s musings about potentially serving a third term as president have made the cut. After repeatedly floating the idea, Trump clarified on Sunday that he’s “not joking.”
“I’m sorry — considering the options? Are you trying to order off menu from the Constitution?” Stewart asked Monday night on “The Daily Show.”
During an interview with NBC News, the sitting president said, “There are methods which you could do it.” One of those, which has been floated, would be to urge his Vice President, Jd Vance, to run for president and then cede his power back to Trump. He further stated there were additional methods, but did not elaborate.
“Yes, there are other methods. I think you tried one a few years ago,” Stewart said, alluding to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. “There are other...

Every day is April Fool’s Day when you live in America, except the clowns in charge are rarely ever joking. On Monday, late night hosts reacted to President Donald Trump willingly admitting that he’s already searching for loopholes that could keep him in office for an unconstitutional third term. Trump has made it overtly clear in the past that he hates the Constitution, but The Daily Show host Jon Stewart wants to drive home just how ridiculous he sounds.

Jon Stewart took aim at Donald Trump on Monday’s (March 31) edition of The Daily Show after the President floated the idea of possibly serving an unprecedented third term in the White House. At the top of Monday’s episode, Stewart said, “We’re gonna check in with our good friend democracy,” before throwing to a clip of a Good Morning America news report about Trump “considering the options” for how he could run for a third term as President. The report stated this would be a “breach of the constitution’s two-term limit for president.” “I’m sorry, considering the options?” Stewart responded. “What, are you trying to order off-menu from the constitution? ‘I see you got two terms, but can I get it animal style?'” The late-night host then played another clip, which quoted Trump as telling NBC reporters, “There are methods which you could do it,...

On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart went after President Donald Trump for flirting with the possibility of running for a third term.
Stewart opened the segment by saying he wanted to “check in on our good friend democracy,” which itself has become a political buzz word as Trump looks to increase his executive power with each passing day.
A news clip then played, which reported that Trump is “considering his options to serve a third term in office, a breach of the constitution’s two-term limit for president.”
“I’m sorry, considering the option?” Stewart exclaimed. “What, are you trying to order off-menu from the constitution? ‘I see you have two terms, but can I get it animal style?'”
Stewart then pondered what Trump was going to do to achieve an unprecedented third term. The answer, of course, came in the form of a news clip.

How can President Donald Trump swerve the U.S. Constitution in order to remain as Commander-in-Chief for a third term?
Jon Stewart believes the answer might lie in classic ‘90s action flick Face/Off, which starred Nicolas Cage and John Travolta.
After showing news footage of the story that Trump is genuinely considering remaining in office despite the two-term rule.
“Considering the option? I’m sorry, are you trying to order off menu from the constitution?,” said The Daily Show host. “There are other methods and you tried one a few years ago. There are other methods to stay in power, beyond when you are allowed to be there. Historically, some of them involve catapults. Have you guys heard of the movie Face/Off? Trump will watch that movie as the military seizes power.”
Stewart then joked that Democrats are so feckless that they might be on board with the idea. “What the fuck?...

Beginning in the 1920s and occurring almost annually since 1941, the White House Correspondents Association (the Whca) has held a fundraising dinner that brings together Republicans and Democrats for one evening, and features performers who traditionally lambaste both sides of the aisle. The dinner supports journalists and students, and has generally been the D.C. equivalent of the Met Gala or the Academy Awards. Many great comedians, musicians, and others have performed at the event, including Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle, James Cagney, Duke Ellington, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Peter Sellers, Chevy Chase, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart, Ray Romano, Aretha Franklin, Cedric the Entertainer, Ray Charles, Drew Carey, Seth Meyers, and more. Amber Ruffin was supposed to perform at the April 26 dinner this year. That won't be happening, apparently.

“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” Daniels wrote in a note to Whca members.
Members of the White House team have expressed criticism of the decision to pick Ruffin as the performer and suggested that organizations should rethink sponsoring the event. Apparently dismantling the federal government is a lot easier than having a brief chat with the fifth-billed star of Death to Smoochy.
It’s been three weeks since Elon Musk publicly offered to guest on The Daily Show, after Jon Stewart’s lengthy takedown of the Trump administration’s Doge cuts. But Musk only agreed to appear on the Comedy Central show if the interview “airs unedited,” which wasn’t a problem since, as Stewart pointed out, “that’s actually how the in-studio interviews normally air.”
The Daily Show staff immediately took him up on said offer via a post on social media, and Stewart later reiterated that invitation on the air, claiming that he’d be “delighted” to have the chainsaw-wielding billionaire on the show. In retrospect, that may have been the best acting that Stewart has done since 1998’s The Faculty.

Jon Stewart Dons Wig for an Old School ‘Daily Show’ Gotcha: ‘It’s So Blatant, the Hypocrisy’ | Video

Jon Stewart returned to his roots this week, and by that we do mean the roots of his hair. While calling out Republicans for their hypocrisy around free speech, the Comedy Central host threw on a black wig as a callback to what his hair used to look like in the 2000s.
After playing several clips of rightwing pundits calling the left the “thought police” and comparing Democrats to George Orwell’s “1984,” Stewart pointed to the many words the Trump administration is removing from the federal government as well as their actions toward pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil. The Trump administration is currently trying to deport the Columbia University graduate in the wake of his activism. Columbia has also agreed to place its Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies Department under “academic receivership” for at least five years as a “precondition” for restoring funding.

Jon Stewart fittingly opened Monday’s episode of The Daily Show with the dumbest news of the day: That an Atlantic journalist was accidentally added to a group chat where high-ranking members of the Trump administration were discussing ostensibly classified plans to bomb Houthi militants in Yemen.
And Stewart of course had just the right words for such a staggering mistake: “Oopsie-poopsie!”
The host then went on to reminisce about the old days when journalists had to work sources and pound the pavement to get secret war documents. “Now, you...

Jon Stewart was fired up on Monday’s (March 24) edition of The Daily Show, where he took aim at Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and the Republicans’ hypocrisy over free speech. The comedian started by discussing Hegseth’s recent group chat blunder, where he accidentally included The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg in a text message group about the United States’ plans for military strikes on Huthi rebels in Yemen. “Oopsie poopsie,” Stewart mocked. “Back in my day, if you were a journalist who wanted leaked war documents, you had to work the sources, meet them in a dark garage, gain the trust, pound the pavement. Now, just wait for the National Security Director to be distracted by The White Lotus while he’s setting up his Bomb Yemen group chat.” He continued, “By the way, I might also be in this. I don’t know. I don’t check my group chats.
