When Liam Neeson first revealed that he was in line to head up a new take on The Naked Gun he seemed resigned to the fact that it could go badly, stating back in 2021 that “It’ll either finish my career or bring it in another direction. I honestly don’t know.”

Here in 2025, we’re not too far from finding out if that’s the case given that Neeson’s new spin on the beloved cop spoof series – made famous by the late Leslie Nielsen’s wonderful comic talents – is just a few months away. 2025’s The Naked Gun is headed to cinemas on August 1st, courtesy of Paramount.

While most legacy sequels to beloved movies find a way to incorporate original cast members, that was unlikely to happen in Akiva Schaffer’s reboot of The Naked Gun.

Leslie Nielsen, who played Lt. Frank Drebin, passed away in 2010. George Kennedy, aka Captain Ed Hocken, died in 2016. And since Priscilla Presley has publicly claimed that she would turn down any invitations to return to the franchise, that really only left O.J. Simpson.

Although he died shortly before filming began, there was seemingly no attempt to involve Simpson in the project, for obvious reasons. But that doesn’t mean that the movie won’t include some references to the notorious accused murderer.

The first teaser trailer for 2025’s The Naked Gun just dropped. It finds Liam Neeson’s Frank Drebin (the son of Nielson’s character) brutalizing a gang of bank robbers while improbably dressed as a schoolgirl, complete with a Mission: Impossible-style rubber mask.

Paramount Pictures has released the official teaser trailer and poster for The Naked Gun, the new comedy opening in theaters on August 1, 2025.

Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world! Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps in The Naked Gun.

The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane.

The cast includes Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Cch Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston.

Paramount Pictures is presenting, in association with Domain Entertainment, a Fuzzy Door production. The movie was written by Dan Gregor, Doug Mand, and Akiva Schaffer.

The executive producers include Daniel M. Stillman, Akiva Schaffer, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary. MacFarlane produces with Erica Huggins. Principal photography for the new movie began on May 6, 2024, in Atlanta, and wrapped on June 28 of that same year.

The studio shared the video online just before the start of its CinemaCon presentation Thursday, where extended footage was revealed to huge laughs and resounding applause. The comedy stars Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Police Squad legend Frank Drebin, initially played in the franchise by the late Leslie Nielsen.

Naked Gun’s footage teases a tone that should please fans of the original series, including a moment in which Neeson beats a man with his own dismembered arms. There are also scenes suggesting sexual activity between Neeson and Pamela Anderson’s character that are not quite what they seem. Another memorable moment references Nordberg, the role played in the original movies by O.J. Simpson.

Directed by The Lonely Island members Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone and written by and starring fellow The Lonely Island member Andy Samberg, as well as Taccone, and Schaffer, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was co-produced by Judd Apatow and Rodney Rothman.

A largely forgotten prequel to Liam Neeson’s most beloved action franchise is finding success thanks to free streaming. Beginning back in 2017, the first season of Taken, which follows a younger version of Neeson’s unstoppable ex-Green Beret and CIA agent Bryan Mills, has audiences hooked as they flock to load up the series and delve into the early, but no-less action-packed career of one this fan-favorite action hero.

Exploring the origins of Bryan Mills, with Clive Standen cast in the Neeson role, the Taken series was developed by writer, producer, and former soldier Alexander Cary and ran for two seasons before being unceremoniously canceled in 2018. When the trailer for "Taken" first started making the rounds in 2008, no one thought it was terribly out of character for Liam Neeson to star in a straight-ahead action flick. With films like "Darkman," "Rob Roy" and "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" on his resume, the 1993 Best Actor nominee for "Schindler's List" certainly seemed comfortable making genre movies. The surprise was the five years that led up to it. After failing to snag a well-deserved second Best Actor nomination for "Kinsey" in 2004, he segued to supporting parts in "Kingdom of Heaven," "Batman Begins" and "Breakfast on Pluto," which suggested he was either getting passed over for lead roles, didn't fit the star type for whatever was being offered, or entering the character actor phase of his career.

After the moody Western "Seraphim Falls" failed to catch on with moviegoers (despite the intriguing pairing of Neeson and Pierce Brosnan), next up was "Taken.

Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake originally performed this “Digital Short” on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 16, 2006, and it quickly went viral. Samberg was present at Friday’s 50-year bash at Radio City Music Hall, but his partner in crime was absent. “Andy, don’t be a bitch, I’ll do it with you,” Gaga told him in front of a packed house of former cast members, hosts, and musical guests. Samberg and Gaga started out their set with a version of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (2018), but the former’s voice wasn’t quite up to snuff.

In one of the night’s standout moments, the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert paid tribute to the legacy of The Lonely Island with an epic medley celebrating some of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer’s greatest contributions to SNL, kicking off first with Lady Gaga’s rendition of “Dick in a Box.”

Well, first Samberg attempted a cover of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (complete with Jackson Maine wig) before Gaga shut him down. Then, since Justin Timberlake wasn’t around, she offered to sing “Dick in a Box” in his place.

After a bit, though, Chris Parnell entered the scene to duet with Samberg on “Lazy Sunday,” which then led to Bad Bunny performing “I Just Had Sex,” Eddie Vedder subbing in for Michael Bolton on “Captain Jack Sparrow,” and T-Pain reprising his feature on “I’m On a Boat.”

Taken star Liam Neeson continues to ply his trade as Hollywood’s go-to aged action hero, and the Oscar nominee will continue to cement his legacy in the upcoming action thriller The Mongoose...which has now added several fan-favorite action stars to the ensemble. Coming courtesy of Deadline, it has now been revealed that Mission: Impossible star Ving Rhames and The Shield and Fantastic Four actor Michael Chiklis have joined Neeson in The Mongoose, with MCU star and Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei also set to star.

The Mongoose, which will follow Neeson as veteran and war hero Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, who finds himself at the center of an explosive car chase after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit, is currently filming in Australia. Details of the new cast of characters have also been unveiled, with Tomei playing Neeson’s ex-wife, who asks him “for help when she finds herself in trouble.

This year, expectations are particularly high, since comedic geniuses and real-life besties Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson are teaming up for a Totino's Pizza Rolls commercial that's more or less a bonus episode of their iconic sketch show, I Think You Should Leave.

This isn't the first time that Robinson and Richardson have collaborated with Totino's. Last year, they worked with I Think You Should Leave director Alice Mathias to create an absurdly hilarious commercial debuting the lovable alien Chazmo in a tongue-in-cheek spoof on a classic '80s sci-fi movie. CBS doesn’t have a signature single-camera workplace comedy at the moment, something ABC has with Abbott Elementary, NBC with newcomer St. Denis Medical and Fox with Animal Control.

Houseman has previously collaborated with Greg Daniels, as a producer across both seasons of his Netflix series Space Force, and as a producer and writer on Daniels’ Prime Video series Upload.

NBC continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” with the new documentary, “Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music.” Following the recent four-episode docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” amid the 50th season, which airs Sundays, and ahead of the star-studded, three-hour primetime event “SNL50: The Anniversary Special,” the feature-length music doc promises a deep dive into the musical performances that have become as much of a cultural hallmark as the comedy show’s sketches.

Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is airing on NBC on Monday night (January 27) and will feature untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and news-making musical performances, sketches and cameos of the past 50 years.
