The daughter of one of the Von Erich brothers doesn’t believe her father was portrayed accurately in the A24 movie The Iron Claw.
Lacey Von Erich, daughter of Kerry Von Erich, is speaking out against the Sean Durkin-helmed project which centered around the influential wrestling family. On Monday’s episode of Investigation Discovery’s new docuseries Hollywood Demons, she says the depiction of her father in the movie was “so inaccurate it was heart-wrenching.”
“My sister and I were not in the movie as my dad’s children, and he didn’t have a wife or anything,” Lacey says in the episode. “And that was a really big part of my dad. So how he was portrayed in the movie is so inaccurate that it was heart-wrenching.”

The Iron Claw, directed by Sean Durkin and starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Lily James, is a devastating exploration of masculinity and strength through the lens of the famous Von Erich wrestling family. When it was released in 2023, the film opened to great acclaim from fans and critics. However, Lacey Von Erich, the daughter of Kerry Von Erich (Jeremy Allen White in The Iron Claw), recently criticized the film for its dishonest portrayal of her father and the Von Erich clan.
Lacey Von Erich appears in an upcoming episode of Investigation Discovery's Hollywood Demons, which airs on April 21. If you have watched The Iron Claw and don't remember Kerry having children, it's because the movie omitted his wife and kids to hone in on his internal demons. Before Elizabeth Olsen became the apple of Marvel Studios’ eye, she announced herself to the industry with a powerhouse performance in Sean Durkin’s critically acclaimed indie, Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011).
In 2014, Olsen was then recruited by two major franchises, the MonsterVerse via Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla and the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the Russo brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The latter franchise, in particular, has since consumed most of her time and energy, racking up six movies and three Disney+ series as Wanda/Scarlet Witch, including the Emmy-winning WandaVision (2021) and the animated What If…? and 2025’s Marvel Zombies. However, she still managed to squeeze in some lauded independents, such as Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River (2017) and Ingrid Goes West (2017).

Carrie Coon is a gift. Ever since she made her Broadway debut as Honey in the 2010 revival of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," she's been one of the most sought-after actors for the kinds of roles that are reserved for performers who have that extra oomph factor. It's an ineffable quality. You just know it when you see it, and Coon possesses it in spades. She was transcendent on television as the grieving Nora Durst in "The Leftovers," the dogged sheriff Gloria Burgle in "Fargo" season 3, and would-be New York City socialite Bertha Russell in "The Gilded Age," and has also been sensational in movies like "Gone Girl," "His Three Daughters," and "Lake George." Coon is both an invigoratingly versatile actor and an arresting presence regardless of her character's demeanor.

Since 2012, with its first theatrical release, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, A24 has been hooking audiences with a distinct style emphasizing unbridled creativity. Many A24 films earn an R-rating, allowing filmmakers to push the boundaries with taboo subjects, steering away from the fear of studio interference if a film isn't seen as particularly palatable for general audiences.
With so many R-rated films, it's hard to narrow down the best of the best, as each A24 film is unique in presentation and structure, even if it's from the same director. From bone-chilling horror movies to gripping dramas, these R-rated A24 flicks exhibit true artistry and an extensive knowledge of the craft of filmmaking that's difficult to achieve.

Ash Avildsen adapts Jeff Leen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book following the life of the first million-dollar female athlete, Mildred Burke, in Queen of the Ring. Burke broke down barriers by wrestling men at carnivals and turning the once-illegal women’s wrestling into a revolutionary movement in the U.S. Emily Bett Rickards stars as Burke in this story of triumph, tragedy, and resilience.
Queen of the Ring Review
Queen of the Ring follows Mildred Burke, a single mom who wants to become a professional wrestler. However, with laws in place to block women from wrestling in the ring, Burke takes on men at the carnival to begin her journey to fight for women to be allowed to wrestle in squared circle.
When we meet Mildred Burke, she is down on her luck as a single mother working at a diner with her mother, seemingly with no signs of things going up.

Brady Corbet is proving himself to be one of the most popular voices in independent cinema. His new film, The Brutalist, has earned praise from critics and recognition from the Academy. The period drama showing a Hungarian architect in post-war America establishes Corbet as someone who takes financial risks to explore big themes.
With a rare career journey from acting in Thirteen and Mysterious Skin to the very unique directing debut on The Childhood of a Leader, Corbet’s vision has allowed him to receive various prestigious awards, like the Silver Lion of the Venice International Film Festival and Best Director Award at the Golden Globes, for The Brutalist.

However, Corbet’s situation landed him in the headlines again and also raised some talks about his financial situation within the industry as he surprisingly stated that he got nothing out of The Brutalist.

If there’s one word that could be used to describe the cinema of Sean Durkin,it is “uncompromising,” as the Canadian-American writer/director has a unique ability to tackle uncomfortable stories about human relationships that feel so authentic that they are challenging to watch. Although Durkin’s debut Martha Mary May Marlene put him on the map as a director of note, it was his latest film, The Iron Claw, which received rave reviews, and went on to become one of the biggest successes in the history of A24. Part of the reason these films succeeded as much as they did was that they had inherently compelling subject material; Martha Mary May Marlene examined the process of cult brainwashing, and The Iron Claw was based on the true story of a tragic Texas family wrestling dynasty. However, Durkin’s most deeply moving film to date is the marital drama The Nest,...

Whether you intend to watch ’the big game’ on Sunday or not, there’s just something about a great sports narrative. And no, we’re not talking about the NFL’s tired retread of a matchup we already saw two years ago between Kansas City and the Philadelphia Eagles— we’re talking about sports movies. Even if you’re more into watching film than sports— and let’s be honest, if you’re part of the Film Independent community, then there’s a good chance of that — the best sports films have something for everyone. There’s the irresistible underdog you can’t help rooting for. Determined characters coming together to face insurmountable odds. The framework— an individual or team in pursuit of greatness — is a classic hero’s journey. But as the films below showcase, the best sports stories aren’t actually about the sport at all. They’re about relationships,...

The Iron Claw unapologetically holds a mirror to the world of professional wrestling – the same world it bases itself on. The A24 film, which brims with energy but also superficiality, is based on the true story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty – a Texas family plagued by tragedy.

Sean Durkin, known best for Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Nest, assembled a strong cast for the film, including Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Holt McCallany.
Efron’s journey from the boy in High School Musical to wrestler Kevin Von Erich, the loyal leader of the wrestling clan, does reflect his versatility and willingness to take on challenging roles. That, nevertheless, is for the soul, but what about the tummy? Let’s look into what Zac Efron might have earned for playing Von Erich.

David Von Erich's cause of death is alluded to in The Iron Claw, but conflicting real-life stories have caused confusion about what really killed the ill-fated pro-wrestler. Written and directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw is a sports biopic about the famous Von Erich brothers from Texas who followed in the footsteps of their pro-wrestler father, Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany), and created a dynasty. The Iron Claw tells the true story of the Von Erichs' rise to fame as pro-wrestlers in the '80s and the "curse" believed to have caused a string of tragic deaths in their family.
Although there were six Von Erich brothers in real life, the eldest, Jack Adkisson Jr., died at the age of six before the timeline of the movie. The Iron Claw also leaves out the youngest Von Erich brother, Chris, who died by suicide in 1991. As such, not every...

Jeremy Allen White may well be one of the most dynamic actors working today. He's handled the heat and stayed in the kitchen in The Bear, flexed his muscles as professional wrestler Kerry Von Erich in Sean Durkin's emotional duplex of a movie The Iron Claw, and will soon be seen getting his Boss on in Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me. And for his next move? Well, according to THR, White's about to swap Nebraska for a galaxy far, far away. Yes, the in-demand New Yorker is joining the Star Wars universe and will be voicing a key role in Jon Favreau's recently wrapped Mandoverse movie The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Per the trade's reporting, White is set to voice Rotta the Hutt — son of limacine gangster Jabba — in Favreau's new Star Wars spin-off, which will see Pedro Pascal reprise his role as the titular bounty hunter from The...

For Sarah Paulson, “Hold Your Breath” brought a sigh of relief. Sure, the Emmy- and Tony-winner here plays a woman in the 1930s Dust Bowl who is convinced her children are in danger of an unseen monster dubbed Gray Man. But the experience acting in the horror-thriller made Paulson feel “liberated.”
“American Horror Story” icon Paulson makes her executive producer film debut with the feature, co-directed and co-written by Will Joines and Karrie Crouse (“Westworld”), who previously collaborated on the short film “Propagation.” Crouse’s script was developed in the Sundance Writers’ Lab, with “Hold Your Breath,” originally titled “Dust,” announced in 2022.
“It came to me because I guess Carrie and Will, our directors, thought of me for it,” Paulson told IndieWire, adding that the film was presented as a possible project for her to executive produce. “My agent … read it earlier on and had really liked it. I was very grateful for the opportunity.

Apart from featuring a new set of characters, Apartment 7A also marks the return of several familiar faces from its parent film, Rosemary's Baby. Based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel, Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby premiered over half a decade ago but is still often ranked among the best horror flicks of all time. Its exploration of themes surrounding Catholicism, the occult, and women's liberation remains timeless and influential, explaining why its narrative has further expanded with a prequel movie, Apartment 7A.

There’s no question Carrie Coon broke out with HBO series “The Leftovers.” Landing that role was a big deal for the actress. “I had little on-camera work up to that point,” she told IndieWire over Zoom. “I had done some commercial work in Chicago. I had done one guest star on ‘The Playboy Club,’ with Laura Benanti. I didn’t have that much on-camera experience.”
But a Tony nomination for her performance as Honey in Steppenwolf’s 2012 production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” opened doors to meetings with casting directors — and her husband Tracy Letts. Ellen Lewis had Coon in for an audition. “I met with Damon [Lindelof],” said Coon. “I shot the pilot, which was only one speech, and then I went off and did ‘Gone Girl,’ which I also booked off a tape in my living room. I went through David Fincher boot camp. [‘The Leftovers’] was my first series regular job.

Horror films have always been a way to interrogate the anxieties of a time, society, or culture and reflect them to the viewer -- like a twisted funhouse mirror. Fear is a universal emotion and history is known to repeat itself, so horror is a genre filled with remakes, some of which are very good. Sometimes, like in the case of Leigh Whannell's "The Invisible Man," a remake evolves into something entirely different than the original story to better resonate with modern audiences. And sometimes a remake is, unfortunately, nothing more than a blatant cash grab from a studio looking to squeeze some blood out of the all-holy stone of "Recognizable IP."
And then there are the most controversial of all remakes: the Americanized remake.
Despite the knee-jerk reaction claiming otherwise, American remakes are neither inherently inadequate nor synonymous with "unnecessary." TV shows like "Shameless" and "The Office" are American remakes,...

That same cinephile curiosity is evident in the choice of filmmakers with whom he’s worked, among them Michael Haneke, Sean Durkin, Lars von Trier, Olivier Assayas and Mia Hansen-Love. Co-written with Mona Fastvold,...

A premiere at last year’s Venice Film Festival is now coming to theaters next month. Robert Kolodny’s feature debut The Featherweight, which stars James Madio, Ruby Wolf, Keir Gilchrist, Stephen Lang, Ron Livingston, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Shari Albert, and undefeated professional featherweight boxer Bruce Carrington, is based on the true story of the winningest American boxer in the history of the sport. Ahead of a September 20 release, the first trailer and poser have arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Set in the mid-1960s in Hartford, Connecticut, The Featherweight presents a gripping chapter in the true-life story of Italian-American boxer Willie Pep the winningest fighter of all time—who, down and out in his mid-40s and with his personal life in shambles, decides to make a return to the ring, at which point a documentary camera crew enters his life. Sports biopics are a difficult beast to get right, especially when it comes to combat sports. But WWE veteran and bona-fide A-list actor John Cena says two movies in particular absolutely nail their depictions of professional wrestling. Making any kind of sports biopic is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, studios have a pre-sold audience from fans of the given sport/athlete. However, the depiction of said sport needs to be spot on, otherwise those fans will quickly turn on the movie, labeling it as unrealistic.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, guest hosted by Jeff Goldblum, John Cena was asked for his thoughts on the recent wrestling biopic The Iron Claw. Starring Zac Efron and directed by Sean Durkin, the A24 biopic tells the story of the famous wrestling family, the Von Erichs. Cena had nothing but praise for Durkin's movie and its depiction of the Von Erich clan.

The Iron Claw leaves out details like fake Von Erich brothers and omitted family members for narrative focus. Director Sean Durkin emphasizes emotional truth over factual accuracy in the Von Erich family story. The film portrays strained relationships and tragic events within the wrestling dynasty, highlighting personal struggles.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Iron Claw and contains descriptions of violence and suicide. The Iron Claw is based on the true story of the iconic wrestling family, who famously suffered great loss, and, unfortunately, many of the hidden details that the film omits only add to the tragedy. Throughout the film, what is expressed more than anything is the bond between the brothers and how much they love each other. Director and writer Sean Durkin has expressed that while the film is concerned with the emotional truth of the Von Erichs' story, the movie is still dramatized and shouldn't be considered fact.
